No problem. Detroit bankrupt should sell off every bit of property they have, every license, every corrupt judge, and every fine paid at the order of a corrupt judge, every court house where corrupt judges used to congregate, every union official pension, every government official pension. Every asset and every liability, tote them all up. Every government worker gets fired. The city is no more, and after liquidating all the assets, it is work what? 20$% of the liability?

And he gets that. That is all anyone gets. Perhaps everybody gets 20,000 a year, and the amount over that gets split, so noone gets stiffed, noone starves so a corrupt judge gets his second million.

And then, anyone who wants to contribute to the “I am a poor Detroit cop” fund would be free to do so.

Detroit cops have hurt a lot of people over the years, and helped a lot of people. The people they helped should contribute. The people they hurt, won’t.

Promises that can’t be kept won’t.

Unions have had coercion and threats as their business model for a long time. I don’t care for that business model, and don’t feel compelled to contribute to it.

Where would Detroit get the money to pay full retirements? This policeman didn’t protect me. Why should I have to pay his retirement? Put the blame where it belongs. All these Democrats promised these people pensions. Have the Democrat party pay them. Obama can go out and get people to donate $30,000 apiece just to get to sit by him. He could have a Democrats For Detroit Pensions fundraiser. $30,000 a pop would fill the old pension fund right up. Of course, that’s if the Democrat leaders actually cared about Democrat voters. The Democrats seem to be able to raise $30,000 apiece from their supporters pretty easy. Think of the goodwill the Democrat party would get if they just emptied their accounts to take care of these pensions. Or are the Democrats just a bunch of money-grubbing thieves?

He deserves what he was promised, from the people who promised it.

The people who didn’t promise it owe him nothing.

To the extent that Union officials promised him that he joined the union and he would get these pension and benefits, then they are responsible for what he was promised.

Not all promises are created equal.

If I promise to pay Peter money from Paul, then Paul doesn’t have to pay. If I made the promise, then I am responsible.

Unions had as their business model getting promises from office holder Peter to tax Paul, to pay John.

John may complain about Peter. He has no right to complain about Paul. To the extent that John accepted promises from Peter that depended on Paul’s money, John brought it on himself.

No. Social Security is a scam. It is still a scam if everyone pays into it.

Anyone who wants to pay into Social Security should. Anyone who doesn’t trust the government promise should not have to pay into it.

SS pays, on average a 1% return. Not 1% a year, 1% over the entire person’s life. If you are black, and have a shorter life expectancy, you get -7%. If you are female and have a longer life expectancy, then you get a bit more, but still not a very good deal, even if all the promises were kept.

SS is a scam. I don’t want my kids to have to pay into a scam.

We have a lot of democratic plants, more it seems now than a while ago.

Most libertarians I knew were hard core libertarians except for their ox.

Politics is coercion, by its nature. It isn’t beanbag.

To be fair, some government employees get a salary, and then get to decide how much to put into pension, insurance, and what is left goes to salary.

Some will accept less salary to get a bigger pension. In that case it is like a 401K. Such an employee should get a bigger bite at the bankruptcy apple, to my way of thinking, because it was his money that he gave the crooked government to invest for him, and was victimized.

Doubt it was that was for a unionized police force.

“Some people around here are hilarious. If they had a contract from their employer you can sure as sh-t bet that they’d demand it be honored or see the other party in court....”
*****************************************************************
Well, the Detroit cops will be seeing the city of Detroit in court—bankruptcy court. It’s best if parasites do not bleed their host to death; better if the parasites are in a symbiotic, mutually beneficial relationship with the host. Detroit has been bled to death by its parasites, primarily the city employees including the unionized police with their magnificent benefits and pensions.

Not to worry, the Detroit public employees won’t be alone—bankruptcy is coming to more and more cities. Maybe even New York City now that its voters have decided to create a new David Dinkins era to be ushered in by its newly elected mayor. I hope that doesn’t happen to that great American city, but the early signs don’t look promising.

I realize all that...however, if I am forced to pay into it...noone should be exempt from it...especially congress critters and all federal employees. EVERYBODY who has a federally taxable income should pay into social security......maybe, if everyone had to pay in, there would be enough pressure to modify the system....privitize it for instance.

So your plan is to make things bad enough that someone will let you change it.

Good luck with that.

I must admit I have a degree of ambivalence here. I don’t want to see anyone screwed out of a reasonable retirement, but at the same time, there are serious abuses with public employee benefits that needs to be addressed. We, here in CA routinely see pension abuse. Retire at 50, and make more in retirement than you were making while you worked just isn’t o.k.

maybe he should focus his concern on his union leaders who sold them all on this strategy.

this is like sticker shocked liberals being upset at republicans for the obamacare website failures and their plans being cancelled due to the obamacare law requirements.

Police don't pay into SS so they cannot collect that as a pension. My father was a Detroit cop, but started in the late 20’s and retired in the 1950’s at the age of 50. He became self employed, hanging new storm doors, windows etc for a couple of companys. He paid into SS by law then. He stopped at the age of 65 and collected SS, and his retirement from the city. It was the city that made the contract of 25 years and out if you wished. Those today will have next to nothing when they retire. No city pension and not eligible for SS. That sucks.

We will all end up in the same boat.

SS will go bust.
What little savings we have or a retirement funds will be confiscated
or heavily taxed.
