The Drift toward Despotism (Mark Steyn)
NRO ^ | November 08, 2013 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 11/08/2013 3:03:00 PM PST by Ken H

Too many of our rulers and their enforcers reflexively see the citizenry as a threat.

At a time when over 4 million people have had their health insurance canceled, it’s good to know that some Americans can still access prompt medical treatment, even if they don’t want it. David Eckert was pulled over by police in Deming, N.M., for failing to come to a complete halt at a stop sign in the Walmart parking lot. He was asked to step out of the vehicle, and waited on the sidewalk. Officers decided that they didn’t like the tight clench of his buttocks, a subject on which New Mexico’s constabulary is apparently expert, and determined that it was because he had illegal drugs secreted therein.

So they arrested him, and took him to Gila Regional Medical Center in neighboring Hidalgo County, where Mr. Eckert was forced to undergo two abdominal X-rays, two rectal probes, three enemas, and defecate thrice in front of medical staff and representatives of two law-enforcement agencies, before being sedated and subjected to a colonoscopy — all procedures performed against his will and without a valid warrant.

-snip-

Of course, even with millions of canceled health-care policies freeing up medical staff, it is unlikely that the authorities could ever give the full Deming PD treatment to the bulk of the populace. Perhaps that’s why Americans do not seem to get terribly exercised by these cases. There are over 300 million people, and the chances of Leo taking a fancy to one’s own posterior are relatively remote.

Yet tyranny is always capricious, and the willingness of police and compliant doctors and nurses to go along with it ought to disturb a supposedly free people, no matter how comparatively rare it may seem.

And the seeds being planted for a future revolt for freedom as well.

Getting into the spirit of things, Gila Regional Medical Center subsequently sent Mr. Eckert a bill for $6,000. It appears he had one of what the president calls those “bad apple” plans that doesn’t cover anal rape.

So that's why the plans are more expensive! It explains so much...

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Technically it wasn't Mr. Ekhardt's rights that were violated here, it was his body. But what the hey, there wasn't a warrant anyway.

It's coming. It's almost time, and there isn't anything we can do to stop it.

Have the fuzz indicated why they were so aggressive here, beyond said tight butt? IE does he have a rap sheet for non-govt approved drugs, or else was he known to them? And just as an exercise, imagine if this innocent man had been...oh...let us say, black or brown. Might this be playing out another way?

Very bizarre story. I can sort of understand their reaction to that unfortunate woman in DC as a case of Obama panic, because Obama is probably the most hated president ever and I’m sure the police assigned to protecting him are likely to overreact to any potential danger. And her behavior was certainly bizarre. Btw, people actually did report (before the lawyers got in there) that she was quite paranoid and had had run-ins with other people over her accusations that they were watching her, listening to her brain, etc., so I think she was probably nuts and thought she was delivering a message to Obama. That doesn’t justify shooting her, but you can understand that with the panic involved in protecting a much-hated political figure, the cops might go overboard.

However, there’s no excuse whatsoever for this NM case, since in nothing that I have read did I see that the guy was doing anything “suspicious” (most people’s backsides clench up when they’re nervous) nor did he resist in any way. Very puzzling, but probably also, as Mark Steyn points out, a reflection of things way beyond NM.

Problem solved. Mr Eckert’s butthole is no longer tight.

“Drift” — what does he mean “drift” — we are hurling at 100mph towards it.

Funny story.

If you don’t want psycho cops sticking their fingers up your butt, get up off your lazy butt and elect a constitutional sheriff in your county. I have one. He ran two thug police chiefs out of the county. He also made it clear to the state police commander for the district post that a certain Rambo-wannabe state trooper would not be allowed to patrol county roads.

You want power? Elect a constitutional peace officer.

Defund the police. A free and well-armed people have little use for them.

Can someone explain to me how a secret serviceman can sleep at night having to protect him and spend so much time with him? Surely there are betting private security gigs out there. Recall the face of the marine holding the umbrella over him while getting soaked?

U know who I mean “him”

Is a stop sign in a private parking lot enforceable by LEO?

This is what probably went down: David Eckert is most likely a bad apple, a drug dealer or runner of some sort. The cops were lying in wait, expecting him to be holding. They found a pretext to grab him and *just knew* they had him with the goods, so they proceeded to violate his rights. Now David Eckert owns them. The End.

Drift?

The nautical phrase I would use is "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"

Look for Deming, NM to become a popular vacation spot with people practicing a certain alternate lifestyle.
