GETTYSBURG - He almost was not asked to speak.
In October 1863, President Abraham Lincoln received the same plain envelope that was sent to hundreds of people, requesting attendance at a dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery here.
Col. Clark E. Carr, a confidant of several U.S. presidents and a member of the commission that organized the event, later admitted that commissioners scrambled to send a more personal invitation after Lincoln indicated he would attend.
Asking Lincoln to deliver a few appropriate thoughts, Carr said, was an afterthought.
You see, the dedication's real headliner was Edward Everett. A former secretary of State, U.S. senator, Massachusetts governor and Harvard president whose nationwide tour helped to save Mt. Vernon as a national shrine, Everett was considered the great orator of his time.
When Lincoln arrived, Gettysburg remained raw from the horrific battle that raged here for three days just five months earlier....

Golfing or using executive orders to hurt the family or private sector instead.
It’s odd that he is not going since most Presidents usually worship Lincoln who was the founder of the modern centralization of power.
“His dismissal of the request shows a man so detached from the duty of history, from the men who served in the White House before him, that it is unspeakable in its audacity.”
This pretty much covers obama in his entirety. Unspeakable audacity.
Glad he's not coming to my state.
Not all Illinois lawyers are created equal.
No place, no event, no gathering is made better by the presence of Obama.
He’s afraid he’ll be booed off the stage.
Perhaps he would go if there were a good golf course close by and they invited Reggie to come to.
IMO Gettysburg missed a bullet.
I wonder if they’ve asked President Bush? I’m sure he would accept.
Or Sarah Palin.
I’m glad he’s not going. Re: Lincoln, Barry’s always straining to 1) Make parallels between Lincoln and himself, and 2) offer himself as president as the crowning achievement of Lincoln’s presidency.
I’m glad he won’t be so injecting himself into history.
From the Article:
“His dismissal of the request shows a man so detached from the duty of history, from the men who served in the White House before him, that it is unspeakable in its audacity.
Ask almost any person in this historic town; even his most ardent supporters here are stunned.
Obama long ago veered away from any affinity he may have believed he had with Lincoln, which gives credibility to the criticism that his connection to Lincoln was always a political calculation rather than a true bond.”
So his, (Obama’s), supporters are stunned? Why should they be? They have nothing to offer him anymore, their votes were tallied and he “won”. From now on the Vacationer in Chief doesn’t really need to pay attention to anything that he doesn’t want to pay attention to.
Besides Valerie can take care of it all, It’s time again for another Fund-raiser Vacation...
Just as Obama blew off the christening of the USS Gerald R. Ford here in VA, he figures Pennsylvania’s in the bag already for the dems, so why bother adjusting the schedule to allow for a trip to Gettysburg? Doesn’t matter it’s the sesquicentennial of a Civil War battle, there’s no political gain to be had by going.
Nice. A fiftieth anniversary?
Thank GOD the Marxist is not going.
Dodged a bullet.
The Audacity of a Dope.
Funny but sad. When the shoe fits.
Thanks for the laugh.
I’m almost glad he’s not going.
Obviously the emancipation and resulting freedom of the slaves in American is nothing to celebrate for him.
He would be profaning a sacred site with his evil presence. It gives me the shivers just thinking about it.
He doesn't know enough American history to understand it.
Good...now I’ll watch it!
I think its good news. Now if we could just keep him away from Arlington Cemetary today I would be happy.
Barack Hussein Obama is not a friend of the the United States or the American people. His very presence at such an event, honoring an honorable man like Abraham Lincoln and his stirring historic speech, would be in bad taste - in addition to dissing America and its torches of freedom, maybe he knows he’s fooling fewer and fewer people about what his real goals are. It’s not that long ago that he derided Pennsylvanians for holding onto bibles and guns.
Is it so difficult for the President to acknowledge a white male Republican President did something right?
Snubbing this occasion - passive aggressive crap & disturbed 2-year old pouting conduct.
