Gallup: Most Americans for Raising Minimum Wage
Gallup ^ | 11/12/2013 | Andrew Dugan

Posted on 11/12/2013 7:42:45 AM PST by SeekAndFind

With momentum building at the federal and state level to increase hourly base pay, more than three-quarters of Americans (76%) say they would vote for raising the minimum wage to $9 per hour (it is currently $7.25) in a hypothetical national referendum, a five-percentage-point increase since March. About one-fifth (22%) would vote against this.

Voters in New Jersey amended the state constitution last week to raise the minimum wage $1 to $8.25, by 61% to 39%. Yet a Gallup poll conducted Nov. 5-6 shows that an even greater percentage of Americans would vote for an even higher minimum wage. Of course, Congress, rather than the people via a national vote, holds the actual authority to raise the minimum wage. Despite President Barack Obama's State of the Union call to raise the wage to $9 -- and widespread rallies populated mainly by hourly fast-food workers -- legislation that would accomplish this goal has thus far languished. More recently, the Obama administration has voiced support for the Harkin-Miller bill, which would raise the minimum wage even higher -- to $10.10.

A law that would raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour with automatic increases tied to the inflation rate is only slightly less popular, with 69% saying they would vote for it, and 28% against it. The amendment New Jersey voters passed does link the wage to inflation, but many legislative bills have not done that.

THe question no one ever answers. If raising the minimum wage through government compulsion is such a good idea, why not raise it to $50 or $100 per hour and then force employers to scale everyone elses wages accordingly. That way everyone will have “a living wage”.

Liberals are such morons.

The other 24% of us who are against raising the minimum wage received a passing grade in Econ 101.

Problem is that most people do not ubderstand the impact of raising the minimum wage. Perhaps if they did, they might change their minds.

“would you support raising the minimum wage to 9 dollars?” most would say “hell ya!!”

Now.. if you ask it correctly..

“Would you support raising the minimum wage to 9 dollars if it resulted in higher prices at fast food establishments and other retailers as well as job losses for those trying to get a foot hold in the job market?”

That question will likely get you a “hell no!”

I’d like to get a 25% raise for having minimum skills.

Raise minimum wage, increase inflation, raise my wages as a result, and I pay off the house that much quicker. Of course, should I retire then my savings are also diluted with this Ponzi scheme.

From $7.25 to $9.00 is a 25% increase. Ask those same people if they would favor a government policy that would raise the cost of a McDonald’s happy meal, their groceries and their Starbucks by 25% and you will get a 180 poll result.

Let's see. Since labor is only 25% of the retail price(food industry average) then; if wages go up 25% then the price of the happy meal goes from up 6.25% NOT 25%.

Hopefully, your interest rate is FIXED. For those planning to start a mortgage, this will cause mortgage rates to INCREASE.

The problem is that most people don’t understand the ramifications of the increased minimum wage. So it sounds like the right thing to do.

From bls.gov

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.0 percent), adult women (6.4 percent), teenagers (22.2 percent), whites (6.3 percent), blacks (13.1 percent), and Hispanics (9.1 - 2 - percent) showed little or no change in October.

It's just so sad to see what we are doing to ourselves.

Too many Americans are totally stupid.

If they raise the minimum wage , everything you buy will become even more expensive.

Business’s are not going to just soak up this cost, They will pass it on.

The we will have Higher priced Insurance taking away our extra money ,over paid employees soaking money up, Less people getting jobs, Working less hours, the inflation spiral going up and in a couple of months it will all even out and those who got raises will be right back where they started and the rest of us will have less.

“Hopefully, your interest rate is FIXED. “

Anyone with an adjustable rate mortgage right now is playing with fire. When rates are this low you get a fixed rate mortgage as they can only go up from here. I have a 3.75%. If they drop to 3.25% or lower I’ll refi. No way I would risk getting a 2.5% ARM just to watch it get jacked to some 1970’s rate that exceeded 21% in some cases.

First, even if a majority of Americans supported the lynching of blacks, that still doesn’t make it moral, let alone the right thing to do. Ditto raising the minimum wage.

Second, there is no provision anywhere in the Constitution that gives the federal government the authority to set wages, so even if it were the right thing to do, it still can’t legally do it. States or counties, maybe, but not the federal government. Let’s see how Seattle’s experiment with a $15/hr minimum wage goes, and see if others wish to copy the example. (Why not decree the minimum wage to be $100/hr? Then everyone would be rich! Everyone who still had a job, that is.)

Not sure why I was thinking about minimum wage during my shower this morning...

It’s more proof that Americans are failing each other by failing to teach and understand Econ 101. I wish I would have had Econ in high school. It really was such an eye-opener when I finally got it in college and was one of the influential factors in solidifying my conservative views.

Just wonderful-— I had a small burrito and a medium drink for $5.25 at Taco Casa. Surely its not high dollar but the value is poor and I hate shelling out $$ for increasingly nothing these days. We consumers ultimately choose to pay or not and raising minimum wages too high is a bad idea.
