Anxious congressional Democrats are threatening to abandon President Obama on a central element of his signature health care law, voicing increasing support for proposals that would allow Americans to retain the health insurance coverage they are losing because of the Affordable Care Act.
The dissent comes as a vote looms Friday in the Republican-controlled House on a bill that would allow Americans to keep their existing health coverage through 2014 without penalties. The measure, drafted by Representative Fred Upton, the Michigan Republican who is the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, is opposed by the White House, which argues that it would severely undermine the Affordable Care Act by allowing insurance companies to continue to sell health coverage that does not meet the higher standard of Mr. Obama’s health care law.
But a growing number of House Democrats, reflecting a strong political backlash to the rollout of the health care law, are warning the White House they might support the measure if the administration does not provide a strong alternative argument. The approaching House vote is shaping up as an important test for both the health measure and the unity that Democratic leaders have so far been able to maintain around the health law despite a fierce Republican attack against it.
In a closed-door meeting Wednesday of House Democrats and White House officials, tensions flared as several lawmakers upbraided the administration, saying that the president had put Democrats in a tough political position by wrongly promising consumers that they could keep their existing health care plans. In fact, hundreds of thousands of Americans have received cancellation notices from their insurers because their health care coverage does not meet the minimum standards dictated by the new law.

No deals with the dark side. THEY sold their souls to it, so they can drown in its bilge!
Just how is this going to work? How do you pass a law that says that you get keep something that you no longer have? Do they really think these insurance companies are going to go back and re-offer the old plans? This is crazy talk.
This is a congressional democrat bill as much as it is Obama’s. They CAN’T abandon it now. It’s their tar baby.

They were for it before they were against it, just bidding their time for a few years from now when all those people die along with their health plans.
The veneer is going to be stripped away, it was always intended that millions would be not allowed to keep their plans, Obama has admitted that already!
Wasn’t the entire supposed point of Obamacare to insure something like 20 - 30 million “uninsured/underinsured”?
And instead it has destroyed the insurance of 30 - 53 million people and counting?
Yeah, I wonder what Roberts is going to say now. It’s just another exemption.... from a tax...
Funny thing that the “shutdown” is SUCH a distant memory now.
Pubs, tell your “friends across the aisle” there are 40 repeal bills languishing in Harry Reid’s “ignore” file. House dems can tell their counterparts in the Senate to take it up with Reid.
Trying to apply surface “fixes” to this hot mess is akin to putting earrings and perfume on a warthog. At the end of the day, it’s still just a warthog. Get rid of it. Now.

and exemptions were NOT part of the law. Go the USSC and make sure the full LAW OF THE LAND is implemented without delay!
I think it's just over 5 million who have lost their insurance.
