To try to secure a yes vote by the IAMs 31,000 members here and 1,500 more in Portland, Boeing wrapped the bitter pill of its contract proposal in lots of sugar.
The IAM deal includes substantial cash awards: not only the big ratification bonus but also a golden handshake buyout that would allow retirement with boosted pension terms of $95 per month per year of service for anyone over age 58.
The take-aways include significantly higher health-care premiums and, crucially, the radically changed pension plan.
The new pension plan would have the company contribute a fixed percentage of gross salary into a retirement savings account each year: 10 percent the first year, 8 percent the second; 6 percent the third, and 4 percent every year thereafter.
The IAM is the last Boeing union with a traditional pension, and the company has sought unsuccessfully in multiple contract negotiations to move away from a defined-benefit pension plan to such a defined-contributions savings plan.
The offer would also change the wage structure so that new hires would take 16 years to reach the top of the pay scale instead of the 6 years it takes today.....
A company source said that during secret negotiations over the past months, Boeing moved somewhat toward the union on the pension and health-care numbers.....
In tonight's Kiro 7 article they also talk about the stuff that the Governor added to try to keep Boeing and the union happy.

Eastern could have been a great airline too. But the unions tried to act like the UAW and play ‘hardball’.

You can bet Obama has the National Labor Relations Board keeping a watchful eye on this.
Not sure what happens now. It sounds like the unions figure Boeing will negotiate. But I’ve read too where some think that Boeing will start negotiations with other state’s to see what their options are (tax breaks, etc.) And I imagine WA state will try to make their offers better to the company and the unions.

Thought the same thing. These folks have just voted themselves out of a (pretty darned good) job, in the midst of what is very close to a Great Depression in many areas of the country. Maybe they think Obama is going to ride his Magical Flying Stallion into the plant and scatter Golden Fairy Dust to each and every employee.
The average gross pay for Boeing Machinists last year was about $85,000.
I remember right after the crash in 2008 when some union at Boeing went on strike. One of the big sticking points would be that they would start having to pay a $5 co-pay for doctors’ visits.
Eastern had lots of problems, not just the Unions. But the failure to accept a new reality by the unions is what eventually shut the airline.
It was worth far more in pieces, than as a going concern, in the end.
If I’m Boeing, call their bluff & start packing down south..Inslee & his goons were obviously spooked enough to pass the tax breaks so unless they have more tax payer $ to bribe Boeing, ball is in their court.
(I say the union was stupid because there was no way they could replace the pay they were getting for the work they did.)
If I were Boeing, I’d have a contingency plan all set to go to move production to other Boeing plants. I’d also make arrangements to transfer as much of its work out of Washington state to other states without these IAM pukes. Let the union strike — Boeing shuts down operations in the state and moves out completely. Screw Barry’s union thugs.
Well, the 777x deal going to Texas or South Carolina would ALSO mean a big loss in tax revenues that will be made up somewhere else.

Even the ENGINEERS at Boeing are unionized (well, Boeing Aircraft anyway).
The last machinist’s strike at Boeing was 2006-2007 or so, and they were still feeling the effects YEARS later. .
Interesting that they don't mention "work" in that slogan.
The union members think that Boeing is bluffing. They do not know how hard Obamacare has hit the corporations. They do not know how expensive these pensions when are taken in the context of the economy.
Move to South Carolina, Boeing.
It is these same unions in Washington State that lined the pockets of the Washington State Democrats. It is these pension programs that the unions use as a slush fund for their donation money to Democrat politicians. The unions in Washington State pay people to man the phone banks, walk the precincts, make the political signs and all the things the typical grass root volunteers do for Republicans. These are the same people who put Zer0 into office; who are now suffering the consequences in their benefits package because of Obamacare.
If Boeing production goes the South Carolina, it is the Democrat ass kissing unions that have themselves to blame.

Do your due-diligence on this. Former Boeing looked over employee Alan Mulally now Ford CEO is diligently working to totally remove the pension Liability from their balance sheet by funding aggressively and or Buy-Outs.
Boeing screwed up by not promoting Alan, Ford's gain, but it is times like this I bet they wish they had him back....
And Holder and Obama and Reid and Pelosi will be out front as the Feds bring suits/edicts that they cannot relocate because of the suffering it will cause - sometimes they think suffering is bad; other times it is the goal...

Greed is an element but timing is the key. The union must go for broke while Obama is president. If the union can not bully Boeing with the current contract negotiations, it will lose out until the next round.

Seriously, I watched the late KIRO TV breaking news on the rejection of the Boeing contract. The members were hopping mad at Boeing. It shows how much they have been inflamed by the union rhetoric. They think this is a bluff by Boeing, so they are going to stand their ground. I believe they are taking a big risk. Boeing has already built a new plants: St. Louis, Missouri, and Charleston, South Carolina. Both have great locations to port facilities.
Seattle is a great port facility, however, the transportation to and from the port is horrible. The politicians in Washington State's capitol think highway construction will only benefit those pesky cars. Between the environmentalists and the unions, the cost of highways is sky high and takes forever to build. I bet St. Louis and Charleston have great highways.
There is a black cloud hoovering over rainy Washington State. If Boeing moves out, the economy will be hit hard. The nitwits in Olympia (the state capitol) have no clue what the real consequences will be. To me it will be the result of the liberal politicians who will have sold the State of Washington down the river. If they think their tax revenue is hurting now, wait until there are no Boeing workers to provide the state sales tax (which is one of the highest in the nation) and the property taxes.
I talked with a gal from Boeing yesterday who has been there for years. She said it was more than likely going to be a “no” vote.
Maybe it’s time to re-open the Wichita, KS plant. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Developing a new product in a new factory with new workers may work for some plastic toys but I doubt I will be a success for an aircraft.
The workers are greedy? Who at Boeing is more greedy than the top management?
That chart is misleading. Union member are you? The 787 in Charleston started a year later, yet, it is keeping pace for growth every bit as much as the union shop.
Let’s not forget the union shop thwarts all communication, training, and other essential business operations against all non-union shops.

The Everett plant “delivered” the first 10 aircraft within 2 years. The Charlston plant did need 3 years to deliver 10 aircraft and all the early dirty little problems were already solved.
