The results of a new poll paid for by a super PAC supporting Wyoming U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi werent surprising.
Pollster Bob Wickers reported that of 400 likely 2014 Republican primary voters, 69 percent supported Enzi over Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney who is trying to oust the three-term incumbent.
The results showed Cheney only had 17 percent of support from those polled.
Wickers has long-standing ties to Wyoming. He worked for state Treasurer Mark Gordons 2008 congressional campaign and state legislator Colin Simpsons 2010 gubernatorial campaign.
The Cheney camp called it a phony poll conducted by a well-known pay-for-say group.
Wickers did not respond to Star-Tribune emails asking for details about the poll.
American Principles Fund, a super PAC run by the daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, paid for the polls. The poll results come weeks after the pro-Enzi PAC ran a string of politically-charged ads in Wyoming that took creative license with clips of Cheney talking about gay marriage on MSNBC.
Polls conducted by Wickers havent been the most reliable barometer of elections in the past, said Brittany Wells, Cheney for Wyoming spokeswoman.
Wickers firm conducted a poll that had Republican Senate candidate David Dewhurst leading now-Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, 51 to 16 a few weeks prior to election day in 2012.
Considering that history, Wells said, we feel very good about the chances of seeing Liz Cheney elected to the U.S. Senate next year.
Even though the funding for the polls signifies close ties to the Enzi camp, the senators supporters arent doubtful about the results.
The same pollster had Enzi up on Cheney 61 percent to 21 percent in August weeks before American Principles Fund got involved in the election.
I dont really know the pollster all that well, but even if hes off by 25 points, Mike Enzi would still be ahead by 27, said Bill Cubin, co-founder of Wyomings Own, a super PAC supporting Enzi. Theres still a lot of time, and a lot can happen, but Im starting to smell a blowout.
Enzi's campaign team, which is independent of the American Principles Fund and the pollster, said the senator has worked hard to gain the trust of Wyomingites.
"Mike remains as committed as always to doing his job well -- fighting to stop Obamacare and the war on coal and working to keep the federal government out of the lives of Wyoming citizens," said Enzi for Wyoming spokeswoman Kristin Walker.
A poll conducted independently of the American Principles Fund was released in the weeks after the race began in July. Enzi had a 34 percent lead over Cheney with 55 percent of likely Republican primary voters choosing him and 21 percent supporting Cheney in a poll of 422 likely Republican primary voters done by Conservative Intel.
A pollsters record of accuracy is the most important thing, said Andrew Garner, assistant professor in the political science department at the University of Wyoming.
Garner was skeptical when he heard Enzi jumped 12 points in the polls since August.
Pollsters have no incentive to cook the books, he said.
They make a lot of money conducting polls on a reputation of accuracy, he said. Any time they do anything that would question their accuracy or objectivity of their polling methods would be disastrous.
You have to question internal push polls, but still that doesn’t mean that I think Cheney has a chance.
Good for Wyoming.
Go get em, Liz!
Liz Cheney is a loser, and she never had any justification for running in Wyoming in the first place, other than “I’m entitled.”
Liz Cheney is a loser, and she never had any justification for running in Wyoming in the first place, other than Im entitled.
Exactly. She’s a huge RINO, too.
Cheney replacing Enzi is a joke.
Go get em, Liz!
Yeah, in Virginia, not Wyoming.
I probably have as much of a chance of being the next senator from Wyoming as she does.
Yet another poll confirming what we already know. Wyoming voters don’t want a carpetbagging RINO establishment candidate.
Liz Cheney is the Romney candidate, she not only was a part of his campaign in 2008, but she has adopted his methods, she was never pro-life during her 46 years of life and in her political career, and she has been promoting gay marriage and homosexualizing the military, for years.
For this campaign, she has suddenly become pro-life and claims to not support gay marriage.
Romney lives, and she moved to Wyoming to avoid confronting a democrat, in the state that is her home.
It’s heartening to see that the Liz bots are outnumbered on FR by people with sense, at least on this thread.
Next time Liz, go after a Rat-held seat.
"How DARE you attack a great heroic conservative champion like Liz after she's spent years supporting our issues!!!" (as we hypocritically trash Mike Enzi and bite the hand that feeds us after he's spent years doing what we want)
Then it was:
"Enzi is Obama suckup, Ted Kennedy pal, reach-across-the-aisle-with-his-Democrat pals, Washington establishment, not-a-fighter, sleepwalking through history, bipartisan RINO scumbag!!! NO person should EVER have THREE terms!! SOMEONE must replace him!! ::whispers:: Liz Cheney? Who's that? I'm not supporting her. ::loudly:: Let's get back to talking about how much Enzi sucks!"
And the most recent tactic:
"Hmmm. MAYBE Liz Cheney is not as conservative as we hoped, I'm not going to defend her, and MAYBE Enzi's record in office is pretty good. But it doesn't matter! Enzi is an incumbent, and therefore MUST go, if for no reason other, to SEND A MESSAGE to the Washington establishment. We HAVE to execute a few of our own to teach them a lesson!!"
Mary Cheney unloaded on comments her sister made about gay marriage on “Fox News Sunday,” saying that Liz is on the “wrong side of history.” So did Heather Poe, Mary’s wife.
Her full message:
I was watching my sister-in-law on Fox News Sunday (yes Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law) and was very disappointed to hear her say “I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage.”
Ah according to ‘history’ these perverts that have deceived themselves and have taken the wrong path. Reality stinks but it is what it is. I have yet to be convinced that Liz is little more than the ultimate politician that is in need of her ego getting stroked.
Marriage is a union of man and woman by design from the Creator since the beginning of this age. Mary is on the wrong side of history.
Mary Cheney & ugly *itch Heather Poe
Gay Marriage more important than family to some activist it seems!
Heather Poe is a former park ranger and UPS manager.
Spicing up an election cycle over who is or is not approving of perversion is just one more snapshot at how clueless the GOP is on what keeps this nation safe and protected.
The GOPe has become boring and redundant seeking to be progressive-lite.
