A disproportionate number of Latinos and immigrants are disproportionately killed in fall accidents in New York, according to a new study by the Center for Popular Democracy, because they work in construction in relatively high numbers; are concentrated in smaller, nonunion firms; and are over-represented in the contingent labor pool.
According to Fatal Inequality: Workplace Safety Eludes Construction Workers of Color in New York State:
Latino construction workers said they feared retaliation from their employers if they raised concerns about safety conditions. The report also points to an underfunded and understaffed OSHA and penalties for safety violations that are so small that employers can see them as just an incidental cost of doing business.
The report warns that matters could get worse because the construction and insurance industries are proposing an amendment to weaken the states Scaffold Law, which requires owners and contractors to provide appropriate and necessary equipment, such as safe hoists, ladders and scaffolds. The law holds owners and contractors fully liable if their failure to follow the law causes a worker to be injured or killed. It would shift responsibility for workplace safety from owners and contractors, who control site safety, to workers, who do not.
More illegal hiring results in more illegals sustaining injuries.
“Latino construction workers said they feared retaliation from their employers if they raised concerns about safety conditions.”
Or, more likely feared deportation...
A disproportionate number of Latinos and immigrants are disproportionately killed.
How can you be “disproportionately killed”
Nice word-smithing there.
Simple. Deport them all. Problem solved.
Apparently, they’re killed deader than whites who are killed.
“A disproportionate number of Latinos and immigrants are disproportionately killed in disproportionate fall accidents in New York, according to a new study by the Center for Popular Disproportionate Democracy, because they work disproportionately in construction in disproportionately high numbers; are disproportionately concentrated in smaller, nonunion firms; and are over-disproportionately represented in the contingent labor pool.”
“86% of Latinos and immigrants killed in falls from an elevation in the state were working for nonunion employers.”
That’s the root of the story: unionize or you’ll fall, ese’.
“...because they work in construction in relatively high numbers; are concentrated in smaller, nonunion firms; and are over-represented in the contingent labor pool.”
Gee. I would have expected they would fall due to losing their balance, or tripping, or even being pushed, or something like that.
They cant speak English. They are a danger to themselves and everyone around them. They cant communicate dangers to others or themselves.
I’m sure Bill de Blasio is working on a solution to this terrible tragedy caused by the evil free market.
We should pass a law that requires one union construction worker to be killed for each non union “immigrant” construction worker that is killed, that would be fair.
All the more reason to send them home! AMF!
You have to get the right immigrants. The Iroquois from Quebec had no trouble working high up.
Maybe it’s because they don’t understand English, as in, “Look out!!”
If white people were disproportionately dying this way, would you be lamenting it in a weepy article? No? Then shut the F up!
A friend of mine that runs a gutter installation company has told me he’s watched roofers here in Texas where a guy straight from Mexico brand new on the job intentionally walk off the roof in order to break something and claim some kind of compensation. That kind of thinking certainly plays a part in this idiocy.
