Americans are more conservative than they have been in decades
Washington Post ^ | 9/30/13 | Larry Bartels

The latest update of Stimson’s policy mood series suggests that the American public in 2012 was more conservative than at any point since 1952. (Actually, since mood in each year is estimated with some error, it seems safer to say that the current level of conservatism roughly equals the previous highs recorded in 1980 and 1952.) While the slight increase in conservatism from 2011 to 2012 is too small to be significant, it continues a marked trend that began as soon as Barack Obama moved into the White House.

They didn’t. Obama was down, too. We need to pick up the middle class. Doing so in a POTUS race means a landslide victory and a “mandate for change”.

Americans are more conservative?

Yeah - I can tell by their government. :)

And California is leading the way in conservativism. :D:D:D:D:D

Leave your arms by your side, just get your head around it. ;-]

Stimson’s been tracking this for a while. The public wants change, they didn’t get what they wanted out of Obama. He lied and tricked them.

Don’t lie, don’t trick them, show them that you’re on their side and sell them conservatism in a way they can understand and we can run the country for a generation.

Anecdotes don’t win elections. Americans are really unhappy with their government right now.

The American people elected Obama, twice. They elected a more leftist senators and the people of VA elected Hillary’s bagman.. If they don’t vote, it doesn’t matter.

Jimmy Carter made me (and a lot of others) a conservative. It’s no surprise that Obama is making a lot of young people conservative, or that the last time the numbers were so high was 1980.

??

The headlines are the opposite of facts on the ground.

This country is more socialist than it has ever been.

This country is more and more socialist every year, the government is in the process of stealing or destroying 1/6th of the economy with ACA/single payer. Not even taking all the other stuff into account.

The idea that this country can be called “conservative” is ridiculous.

Sadly, I fear it makes no difference anymore what the American people believe or want.

They are going to get both a decadent society and an oppressive nanny state shoved down their throats.

“Whether they like it or not.”

Judge by schools, colleges, media and culture and tell me there is any kind of conservatism in this country.

If Obama did what happened in Venezuela and started nationalizing industry and seizing businesses and giving the stuff away, his popularity would skyrocket among the sheeple.

I actually believe this... but the low info voters are truly clueless. My mother is in her late 70’s, she and all her book club ladies are democrats... and she doesnt’ believe me when I tell her what her party really believes. On every issue we debate, she always take an extremely conservative viewpoint... and she believes that her party and Obama in particular, share these viewpoints.

And she absolutely hates republicans, or at least the ones we’ve put forward lately. She liked Bush elder, and Reagan... and Nixon as it happens.

Beside the point.

Sure ‘Conservative policies create demand for liberal policies, and vice versa.’ as stimson believes and his polls evince.
But it doesn’t matter.

The media want increased consumer spending and they will present elections to the voters in the way that makes them the most money.
So the ‘liberal’ always has the better press as the conservative will have more respect for property and wealth creation.
Advertisers pay media for spending and in any immediate fiscal quarter the liberal, through income redistribution will deliver more of it to them. In the longer term the media is cutting iy’s own throat as wealth is destroyed but it’s the short term their stockholders and officers are concerned with.

So we’ll always vote more liberal than we are.

It’s not an anecdote. Any election return will tell you that.

If there are really so many conservatives out there, how the come the left runs every single level of our government?

> I was just talking to a registered Dem family. Their comment: The Democrats are destroying the middle class. This is in Cook County aka Obamacountry.

Prior to 5 years ago Democrats weren’t anywhere to the degree of villains they are today. I think what happened is a parasite named socialism targeted the party with the minorities who needed a savior, consumed the host, took over it, then morphed into the monstrosity it is today. Its not the Democratic Party I grew up around.

Yes, remember that when the Soviet Union was still around, the hard line Communists were described as “conservatives”. One key to cracking the liberal code is that conservatives are always the bad guys, no matter their actual ideology.
