It's quite possible that the single stupidest school lunch policy on the planet comes courtesy of a strange interpretation of the Manitoba Government's Early Learning and Child Care lunch regulations (an earlier version of this article incorrectly pointed at the Manitoba Child Care Association as the source of the strangely interpreted policy). Apparently if a child's lunch is deemed "unbalanced", where "balance" refers to ensuring that a lunch conforms to the proportions of food groups as laid out by Canada's awful Food Guide, then that child's lunch is "supplemented", and their parent is fined.
Blog reader Kristen Bartkiw received just such a fine.
She sent her children to daycare with with lunches containing leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk.
She did not send along any "grains".
As a consequence the school provided her children with, I kid you not, supplemental Ritz Crackers, and her with a $10 fine.

From the, gubmint is the solution to all your problems department.
And remember if you don’t have a problem,
the government will find you one.
Liberal fascism, coming soon to a country near you. And if a person refuses to pay the fine?
so stupid... who is to say that they do not get their grains at other times of the day? and what is it to anybody if they get zero grains in a day? ridiculous... i would absolutely never send my kids to government school...
Say it with me you punk kid! GOOD CRACKER! SAY IT! Or I’ll send Andy Griffith’s ghost to haunt you!
Every child should be homeschooled. Or in a Christian school.
Kids are on a paleo diet.
“Mmmm! Good Cracker!”
The grain heavy food pyramid was a scam.
Indeed, high fructose corn syrup, being a “grain,” is obviously a healthy choice.
Definitely not. Milk is not paleo. The potatoes are ‘iffy’ for paleo.
And probably the reason we’re so much more overweight than we were before the ‘food pyramid’.
Healthy Whole Grain. It’s Whole Grain, but probably not very Healthy.
“She sent her children to daycare with with lunches containing leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk.”
Yum! That’s some serious lunch food. Mom should be applauded for sending them to school with real home cookin’, not fined.
Next time, though, maybe she should make a point of adding some Yorkshire pudding along with the roast beef. (Take that and stuff it in your “grains” requirement, ya fascists!)
“Liberal fascism, coming soon to a country near you.”
Not likely ;)
Had she put the roast beef between a couple slices of bread ... Problem solved!
Even if you are going to reduce meat and dairy, I’d think more fruits and vegetables would be healthier than more grains/carbs.
My stepdaughter went to Christian elem school and came home one day with a note telling us to be sure her “next lunch included items that were both healthy AND that she liked.” Apparently the carrot sticks were left uneaten and that was unacceptable to the lunchroom nannies.
Micro-control is not just for the public sector!
I’d tell the school to KMA
I made some really delicious mini-Sliders recently with Ritz crackers instead of buns.
Depends on the fruits though. The ‘sweet’ fruits aren’t much better on your blood sugar/insulin response than ordinary desserts. If we’re talking blueberries and other non sweet fruits I’ll agree wholeheartedly.
Funny thing though. My grandmother took one look at the food pyramid and said ‘If you ate this way you’d weigh 300lbs!’. Back when pretty much nobody weighed 300lbs. If only she’d lived a few more years she would have been so shocked!
“She did not send along any “grains”. “
Most grains are very high glycemic and contribute to, rather than prevent, obesity.
And your average Canadian thinks they live in utopia.
Hey! Wait a minit! I do weigh 300 lbs!
Can ONLY apply to what the school serves!
They HAVE NO JURISDICTION over what the parents provide!!!!
The potatoes, carrots and orange are better carbs for the kiddo anyway. There’s no need for grains—and certainly not for Ritz crackers!
I don’t eat or feed my kids HFCS or hydrogenated oils, and I’d blow a gasket if somebody fed my kids these things. Don’t even get me started on food dyes. However, others are free to feed their kids whatever they want.
And how much did you weigh in 1990?
And your friends/family as well?
Look at old pictures from 1990. There are hardly any truly obese people in them. The change is amazing.
I’m thinking gluten free diet.
How I wish my kids were in school these days I would be paying them a visit regularly
Yet another reason to Homeshool!
I made the mistake of trying that once. Gluten-free bread tastes like and has the consistency of sawdust. Avid gluten, if you insist, but don't try to eat things that ought to have gluten in them.
In 1990? maybe 280-ish?
You know what to do.
At our Christian school one of the teachers brought in Al Gore’s movie to teach global warming.
He didn’t work there the following year. Had this not been stopped the kids would have been pulled no questions. The thing is, at least in theory you have more influence in a school where you are paying the bills directly.
You’re right. You have to be vigilant even in a Christian school.
And to stick their fine,
Where the sun don’ shine.
Canadians should start referring to Manitoba as “Marxist Manitoba” and those who promulgate and enforce these stupid policies as “Manitoban Marxists”. Put a nice hammer and sickle on their photos, in blogs, posts, and attached to articles.
Identify the fools by name, title, place of work, and then the H&S symbol.
Somebody will get the message.
Don’t take this crap. Fight back while you can. We are going through this here in the US and only when the people fight back is anything done to stop and correct the PC bullshit policies.
Then get heads to roll, i.e. fired.
I’d fold a ten dollar bill until it was all sharp corners. Then I’d ram it up someone’s.....
Ritz crackers are junk food.
Yup. The problem with processed foods today is that the chemicals in them trick the body into thinking it's getting nutrition, when it is not. The body then craves more and more, leading to obesity. Note that I said nutrition, which if the body received would then turn off the cravings. Overweight people are literally starving for real nutrition, and aren't getting it by stuffing their mouths with processed foods. The food manufacturers know this, but they're in the business to make money from increased sales.
yes! Ritz Crackers are junk food!
My husband has to go on a low sodium diet, ans it’s amazing the amount of sodium in processed food. I think I’m going to be cooking from scratch a lot more.
