Dick Cheney 'Pained' by Public Flap, Sides With Daughter Liz

Former Vice President Dick Cheney took the side of his U.S. Senate candidate daughter Liz in her high-profile spat over gay marriage with lesbian sister Mary, saying Monday that he was "pained" that the family dispute had become so public, Politico reported.

Cheney and his wife, Lynne, issued a statement noting that the gay-rights issue was one "we have dealt with privately for many years."

"[We] are pained to see it become public," the parents wrote. "Since it has, one thing should be clear. Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage."

The parents said Liz Cheney "has also always treated her sister and her sister's family with love and respect, exactly as she should have done. Compassion is called for, even when there is disagreement about such a fundamental matter, and Liz's many kindnesses shouldn't be used to distort her position."

"When they’re constantly sticking it in your face and demanding approval, I believe it’s because they know it’s wrong, and want you to validate their incorrect choice."

I believe you're exactly right. The meltdown that results when approval is withheld tends to prove it, IMO.

I don't understand allowing one family member to terrorize the rest. If it were my sister threatening to vanish from get-togethers, my response would be, "Guess we'll have to muddle through. 'Bye."

No, I don’t. What is hypocrisy, is Rob Portman of Ohio claiming to be against homo marriage, but then after his son comes out, switched his stance in support of homo marriage. What do expect Dick to do, ostracize his homo daughter?

Yes, he should go public with his disapproval of his daughter — because she went public with her crusade in favor of gay marriage. Today, too many parents care more about their degenerate kids rejecting them than they care about Biblical moral standards. They are going to suffer the fate of the Biblical Eli after he refused to discipline his evil sons.

Mary supported her dad though, so it seems she was p-whipped by the ol’ ball and chain into this spat.

Cheney has always tried to thread the needle with this issue. It’s clear he shares Liz’s opinion, but never wanted to throw his gay daughter under the bus.

Bull, Dick and Liz Cheney have been strongly pro-gay for years, this is the sleaziest, most cynical political lying that we have seen since Romney, since this one uses elaborate theatrics at the full family level for national consumption, in some ways it is worse.

It’s a simple answer. Just compare it to smoking. You don’t approve of your family member smoking but that doesn’t mean you disown them.

And it doesn’t stop you from advocating that people shouldn’t start smoking.

He supports Liz and "takes her side" in the argument because she's the one running for office. That doesn't actually mean he really agrees with her.

On the other hand, maybe he only "supports gay marriage" because Mary is his daughter and he doesn't want to alienate her. Maybe he doesn't really care one way or the other.

Tough to be a dad.

Unlike Enzi, the 46-year-old daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney supports the right for states to legalize gay marriage. At least that’s what she said in 2009, in an interview with MSNBC, of all places. At that was a time when the notion of same-sex marriage had considerably less support.

And that has even Daily Kos writer Scott Welch offering at least limited praise for Liz Cheney. Cheney, Welch writes:

“”Well, look I think, you know, my family has been very clear about this, that we think freedom means freedom for everybody and that this is an issue that states have to decide for themselves.””

“”She went on to reiterate opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, expressed support for the State Department’s extension of benefits to same-sex couples, and said, ‘I think it’s wrong to discriminate, in those relationships, based on someone’s sexual preference.’ Additionally, she supported repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.””

It’s a simple answer. Just compare it to smoking. You don’t approve of your family member smoking but that doesn’t mean you disown them.

Sadly, your simple answer, is all wrong where Christianity is concerned.

When someone is caught in an outright sin like Homosexuality, lying, stealing, etc., the New Testament defines the exact Four step process of resolving the issue:

1. You personally confront/counsel the person just between you concerning the sin.
2. IF that does not work, you take two or three others with you and confront/counsel the person concerning the sin.
3. If that does not work, you take the person in front of the church/congregation, etc. and attempt to confront/counsel the person.
4. If the person caught in the sin still refuses to repent, you separate yourself from them.

There is no equivocation on this process, it is simple and straightforward.

Elsewhere, the New Testament counsels us not to cast our pearls before swine (those that refuse to hear) and to figuratively shake the dust off the soles of our feet with respect to those who refuse to listen to the Gospel.

Like I said, the bible is simple and direct, and if we really want to have a positive outcome, that is, that those caught in sin are freed from it, we'll have to Obey God.

If Obeying Christ is important to you, you will need to heed his directions.

If Obeying Christ is not important to you, I guess any approach is OK with you, but don't expect any positive results, nor expect to honestly be able to declare you have any principles with regards to the sin involved, whatever it is.

See post 32, Dick Cheney wanted to openly support gay marriage, back in the year 2000.

The Cheneys are playing games.

Well, now that will pretty much empty the churches.

Maybe, but maybe not if they are actually preaching ALL of the Gospel and not just the parts they think will put butts in the pews.

Remember, Jesus stated very clearly that the path to heavan was a narrow path and few would choose it, while the path to hell was a wide path and many would choose it.

The True Gospel will offend many, some of which will choose to ignore the offence or get over it and obey God, but many will not.

We are instructed to love the sinner, hate the sin. Sounds like Liz and her Dad are living up to that. Life is hard when someone you love sins, but piling on adds nothing to the debate. Liz has expressed her position clearly. Let’s all move on.
