MIILLBORO, Va. (WRIC)Former gubernatorial candidate and Democratic State Senator Creigh Deeds is in critical condition after being stabbed in his home Tuesday morning.
At 7:25 a.m. on Nov. 19, Virginia State Police responded to Deeds' home in Bath County, where Deeds had been stabbed. The senator's son, Gus, was found fatally shot at the scene.
Deeds was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Salem Field Office is conducting an investigation into the assault.

Maybe...or just another reason we need new gun laws (/s)
Either that, or street vermin not worth the air IT breathes. You make the call.
Could be. Weird that one was stabbed and one was shot. Unless they each had a weapon...
“Senator Creigh Deeds is in serious condition after being assaulted by his son in his Bath County home “
Deeds critically wounded; son dead from gunshot
end of article:
Deeds and his first wife, Pamela Kay Miller, had four children: Amanda,, Rebecca, Gus, and Susannah. Amanda, a graduate of the University of Virginia, and Gus, then a junior at the College of William and Mary, took time off to join their father on the trail in 2009.
Deeds and his first wife divorced in 2010. The Washington Post reported at the time that the marriage was “a casualty of a nearly 20-year pursuit of a lifelong ambition that kept him away from home.”
Deeds married Siobhan Gilbride Lomax of Lexington in June 2012.
While I never supported the guy, this is horrible....
May God have mercy on them all....
Maybe he had a knife in his hand when he cracked, or a knife was the closest thing at hand. Afterwards, he could have gotten the gun out of a safe, car, drawer, etc and shot himself.
ANy comment from Michael Bllomberg? Was the son just despondent about the new healthcare law?
Psycologically, isn’t stabbing considered a very “personal” method of attack? Guns are seen as a more distant/removed method. Son intended to inflict horror and pain. Afterwards, couldn’t bring himself to go out that way, so he shot himself. My thoughts. It’s horrible however it went down.
Cop Dramas say that stabbing is more personal. I’m sure they wouldn’t lie about something like that.
Here we go again, the gun grabbers will have the knives out.
Great minds, and all that. :-)
dead men tell no tales?
It’s all speculation and first knee-jerk moment reporting. But, I initially wondered if the Dad shot the son in self defense after or during the stabbing.
I suppose we’ll find out. Don’t forget, he’s a liberal politician. So its a good bet we’ll never get the straight and total truth.
Agree, prayers and God’s mercy on all. Some things transcend politics, and this is one such thing.
I just hate these kinds of stories. It's just impossible for me to think of anything that would have driven me to commit violence on my dad...
Maybe the father shot the son and then stabbed himself.
Guess I was wrong on that.
Kinda looks like his son brought a knife to a gun fight!!!
This was the first comment about the story at DailyKos:
Please get well! (10+ / 0-)
We need to stop the Fox culture of hatred.

No comment.. based on how news screws things up I’ll with hold comments for several days.
I don’t know what happened here, but I have seen it in another case within the past year. Dad cheats on mom. Son acts out in anger. Creigh Deeds and his wife of 30ish years and multiple children divorced. Creigh marries another woman. Son is disillusioned because his life seems to have been a political sham.
Damn. Don’t know the guy, heard that his policies were bad, but still. Prayers for his recovery and for some sort of peace after he finds out about his son. :(
” It’s just impossible for me to think of anything that would have driven me to commit violence on my dad.”
I can see my brother doing it. Luckily my parents are dead. When mom would threaten to cut off the money, he would come unglued.
“Maybe the father shot the son and then stabbed himself.”
Yeah. Harry Carey style.
It was personal and needed a personal touch.
Horrible..mental issues usually appear at his sons age, late teens/early 20’s.
Just speculating but my brother loses it when the issue of him getting help has come up.
“Democratic sources tell News4 that Deeds’ son Austin “Gus” Deeds attacked his father Tuesday morning before turning a gun on himself. Police say Gus Deeds died at the scene.”
Stabbed dad, shot self is the news so far.
Yeah. Harry Carey style.
Have they blamed TEA party radicals yet?
Look for the one armed man with the Gadsden flag.
I noted this:
Del. David Toscano, Charlottesville Democrat, said in a statement that Mr. Deeds is in critical condition at the UVA hospital, is being closely monitored and is in intensive care.
This is a terrible tragedy, Mr. Toscano said. Senator Deeds was very close to his son Gus, and has taken herculean efforts to help him over the years.”
Probably had a very difficult son, maybe drugs, have no idea yet. It has to be horrid.
“Maybe...or just another reason we need new gun laws (/s)”
What, a law to keep guns out of the hands of Democrats? Now, THAT would reduce a lot of crime for sure!
What a horrible shame.
“Here we go again, the gun grabbers will have the knives out.”
Pun intended, or just happy coincidence?
Odd that the son was shot and the Senator was stabbed?
Who attacks a grown man with a knife when he’s carrying a gun?
Just Fox so far.
Austin ‘Gus’ Deeds, Son, Reportedly Stabs Senator Creigh Deeds; Kills Self
Austin Gus Deeds, the son of Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds, stabbed the senator before shooting himself, according to reports.
Virginia state police said that his son attacked him on Tuesday before he turned the gun on himself, News4 reported, citing unnamed sources.
Gus Deeds died on the scene, officials said.
Police were sent to Deeds home at around 7:25 a.m.
A local newspaper, The Recorder, said that Gus Deeds stabbed his father, Sen. Creigh Deeds, this morning, and then shot himself.
I have known Sen. Deeds for many years, going back to when he was in the House of Delegates. He is a great guy. He was responsible for the amendment to the state constitution preserving the right to hunt and fish in Virginia (a totally unnecessary amendment, but you never know).
Deeds lives in the state’s least populous county, Bath County, where there are natural hot springs and the Homestead resort. About 3,000 people live there, I think. It is against the West Va line.
I have never met his son.
Deeds ended up in a recount in his race for attorney general, losing by about 400 votes, I think. He lost to the man now governor, McDonall.
I think he was just being “weaponist”.
“Psycologically, isnt stabbing considered a very personal method of attack? Guns are seen as a more distant/removed method. Son intended to inflict horror and pain. Afterwards, couldnt bring himself to go out that way, so he shot himself. My thoughts. Its horrible however it went down.”
Yes ma’am, knives are very much up-close-and-personal, and as some say, ‘once administered, to watch the change in the light of the eyes directly’. It is also said that knife tips have a bad habit of sticking in bone. That might explain the gun use.
This story has a lot of “fill in the blanks” yet, so I withhold my observations.
Very tragic for the fractured families; so much divorce, pain, and mental illness; young men need jobs and their own families; need independence.
“Psychologically, isnt stabbing considered a very personal method of attack?”
Bingo. Lots of rage involved.
One fine day in the middle of the night
A father and son began to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Drew their knives and shot each other.
A blind man saw it a deaf man heard it
and a man with no legs run to get the police.
or so I’ver been told
Just ask Norman Bates.
What kind of man is the father?
