Austin ‘Gus’ Deeds, Son, Reportedly Stabs Senator Creigh Deeds; Kills Self

Austin ‘Gus’ Deeds, the son of Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds, stabbed the senator before shooting himself, according to reports.

Virginia state police said that his son attacked him on Tuesday before he turned the gun on himself, News4 reported, citing unnamed sources.

Gus Deeds died on the scene, officials said.

Police were sent to Deeds’ home at around 7:25 a.m.

A local newspaper, The Recorder, said that Gus Deeds “stabbed his father, Sen. Creigh Deeds, this morning, and then shot himself.”

I have known Sen. Deeds for many years, going back to when he was in the House of Delegates. He is a great guy. He was responsible for the amendment to the state constitution preserving the right to hunt and fish in Virginia (a totally unnecessary amendment, but you never know).

Deeds lives in the state’s least populous county, Bath County, where there are natural hot springs and the Homestead resort. About 3,000 people live there, I think. It is against the West Va line.

I have never met his son.

Deeds ended up in a recount in his race for attorney general, losing by about 400 votes, I think. He lost to the man now governor, McDonall.

I think he was just being “weaponist”.

Yes ma’am, knives are very much up-close-and-personal, and as some say, ‘once administered, to watch the change in the light of the eyes directly’. It is also said that knife tips have a bad habit of sticking in bone. That might explain the gun use.

This story has a lot of “fill in the blanks” yet, so I withhold my observations.

Very tragic for the fractured families; so much divorce, pain, and mental illness; young men need jobs and their own families; need independence.

Bingo. Lots of rage involved.

One fine day in the middle of the night
A father and son began to fight

Back to back they faced each other
Drew their knives and shot each other.

A blind man saw it a deaf man heard it
and a man with no legs run to get the police.

or so I’ver been told

My thoughts exactly. His son campaigned for him — then after reelection he divorced and married young wife. I can understand why a son would be livid. Too bad the son had to destroy his own life.

What kind of man is the father?

This is horrible.

Prayers for all of this poor family.

No matter how much time passes, there is something particularly painful about losing a loved one to suicide that remains with the ones left behind.

May God be with all of the family and friends who are touched by this terrible tragedy.

Absolutely awful. I hope State Senator Deeds recovers completely and quickly.

Family argument?

Without knowing any facts, that was the first thing that popped into my head as well. One stabbed and one shot. Why not shoot both if it was an intruder?
Yep. I believe one got stabbed and the other shot back in self defense.

Believe murder by knife is referred to as a “crime of passion”. He wanted his father to see him, to feel the pain. Yowza.

Democratic sources tell News4 that Deeds' son Austin "Gus" Deeds attacked his father Tuesday morning before turning a gun on himself. Police say Gus Deeds died at the scene."

Opps. I was close, but no cigar. Suicide never entered my mind.
Darn it! I suck at this game.

Did Gus lose his health insurance policy and was he over 26?
