Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: Senator, when Obamacare was at issue, a month ago, when it came to a continuing resolution to funding the government you supported a filibuster of other Senators, who demanded that you had to have a change or the abolition of Obamacare as a condition for funding the government. In retrospect do you think that was a good strategy? But even more importantly --looking ahead, the deadlines are coming up, the resolution's going to run out, we're going to hit the debt ceiling soon -- would you be prepared to use same tactic as we approach the new deadlines? SEN. RAND PAUL (R-KY): Well, I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

The shutdown was over Obamacare. Obamacare is a disaster. What part of this does Rand Paul not understand?

Uhm, no I haven’t. What I’m saying is I wish more of our conservative workhorses (Walker, Cuccinelli, Perry etc) were solidly behind Cruz... or even on board with him.

It cost billions of dollars and accomplished nothing.

Really had no intention of writing replies today until I saw that comment.

The shutdown was essentially a neutral event financially...Where do you see costs?

Government procurement and it's related contracts are costs as they confiscate money from the private sector to pay for it. Money that could have been used to fund economic growth...

There was no increased or decreased costs. All the payroll was paid, all the contracts survived, and nobody other than people who thrive on government services were inconvenienced at all, if only temporarily..

You got that opinion from the media, did you not? You know....the same media that makes up stuff to create a narrative so that they can report on it.

If I were totally dependent for a salary, or business from the Federal government, I would be making changes now...because later will be too late.

There will come a point in time where this government can no longer function. It's fiat money will be of no value for any purchase other than at the government store, and shortly after that, there will be no more stores or services..It will all be ashes. Those who are so dependent on government that they cannot cut the cord will surely die...and the government won't be there to save your sorry butts...

Well, we didn’t see Sarah or Ted in VA, just Ron Paul... we should have won that seat. Probably did, too, except for fraud.

So, Rand is a go-along-to-get-along type of guy?

If he has no backbone to stand for what he supports or is against, why would we expect him to have any backboad in the future?

His appearance on the Fox Panel last night was not his finest hour. When Krauthammer turned the subject to foreign policy and specifically Iran, he turned into his father, before then turning into jelly.

Yep The shutdown was a friggin stupid , self destructive, beyond just dumb. Every pollster, politician, avid follower of politics knows the public hates shutdowns. HATES them. With the media in Obama’s pocket in was over before it started. Obama and Jarrett coulden’t wipe their grins off their faces.

Even Mike Lee is backpedaling.

So that leaves Ted Cruz...Sarah Palin and a few posters on this forum who think it was a good idea.

I think old snitch McConnell has something on Rand since he got to washington. Most of this year Paul has made one bad call after another. He doesn’t seem to understand you can’t cut deals with liberals/communist, they lie just like the old Soviets did.

He seems to think that if he placates the beast it will support him when he needs them, they will not as they are incapable of loyalty except to their leftist ideology.

This is becoming his modus operandi, as I’ve often said. I don’t trust him.

Heaven forbid that Rand Paul try to distance himself from an expensive disaster of a move that accomplished exactly nothing at all and made him look like a fool for participating in. I mean, none of us would ever do such a thing, now would we?

I’d rather take a man who’s MO is supposedly to backpedal from complete disasters than one who charges forward with them a la Obummer.

"Rand Paul, we had such high hopes for you"

Really since when have you done anything other then to Bash Paul constantly and ra ra Cruz? Shutting down the government and letting the Rats blame the GOP for it was a horrible idea. Paul knew that but stood with conservatives even thou he knew he was going to take a huge hit for it. So now you're bashing him for being loyal to TP conservatives? Do you work for the Rats? Cause all your constant bashing of Paul is doing is turning off Paul supporters that probably would have been happy supporting Cruz. If think Bashing Paul is making Cruz friends you're an idiot.
