U.S. and Afghan officials reportedly have reached a tentative agreement on a critical security pact -- which would include President Obama writing a letter to the Afghan people acknowledging mistakes during the "war on terror."
According to Reuters, an Afghan spokesman said Tuesday that Obama agreed to write the letter, to be presented with the draft security pact at a meeting of tribal elders later this week.
The New York Times, citing a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, reported that Secretary of State John Kerry proposed the letter in a conversation with Karzai.
Karzai asked that Obama sign it, and Kerry reportedly agreed. The letter apparently helped them reach a tentative deal authorizing U.S. raids on Afghan homes in certain circumstances, which had been an area of disagreement.

Mistakes from the Drone King that recently claimed that he is really good at killing people?
Mistake #1: Going into Afghanistan absent the will to kill every last person in that country.
In 4,000 years of history every single army that has entered Afghanistan has been subjected to a meat grinder because the invader was unwilling to annihilate the Afghans.
Anyone not willing to annhilate those people needs to stay out or else they should not be surprised when they learn the same painful lessons as every invader since Alexander.
Barry apologizing for America fighting a war on terror is treason of the highest order.
Eff you soetoro.
Did he promise: “If you like your 9th century culture you can keep it”?
1) Electing Barack Obama
2) Electing Bill Clinton
“Dear Afghan people: I didn’t know there was a war going on in Afghanistan until I read about it in the paper the other day.”
All will depend on what is said and how it is said, in Pashtun. The English translation will be worthless.
We could have taken Afghanistan quite well, had politicians not dithered the damned thing to failure.
It’s been that way for a long time now.
We could have taken ‘the U. S.’ quite well, had politicians not dithered the damned thing to failure.
Its been that way for a long time now.
Sgt. Weeper’s Magical Apology Tour continues.
The magical apology tour is coming to take you away, Democrats ...
What an em-bare-ass-ment. He makes Carter look good.
Oh yeah, and his horse-faced secretary just rang the dinner bell for China, et al:
“No mo Monroe!” MC Mr. Ed
I’m thinking resignations en masse is the only way to go.
We haven’t had an administration this snake-bit since 1978.
Actually, the Rooskies were doing a good job in the ‘80s before the American Stinger missiles made the helicopter gunships ineffective.
He should apologize for not wiping the taliban and their mullahs off the map.
Kale eating surrender monkey
Why would this work? newspapers these days are just republishers of press releases.
Why would *what* work? Obama & Co. resigning en masse?
Like Clinton, this crowd has no shame, no love of country.
They won’t leave unless he’s impeached by the House and removed by the senate.
Recall Nixon in 1960 and 1974. Whatever you think of him, he could have fought like algore in `60 and Klintoon in `74, but maybe he figured it was best for the country to concede.
He had his reasons, but I wish he had fought. Kennedy and Johnson stole the election and a third-rate burglary doesn’t begin to amount to even one of the many impeachable offenses committed by organ grinder Jarrett and her trained monkey.
Compared to this nutter, Benedict Arnold is a national hero.
Shouldn’t THEY apologize to US for 9/11 and everything since?
A fascinating read is The Bear Went over the Mountain, which is a compilation of lessons learned from a Russian military perspective. There is also a companion book, The Other Side Of The Mountain, which is essentially the Afghan perspective.
In short, my take on it was that the old military adage about amateurs talking tactics and professionals talking logistics was turned inside out for the Soviets in the 80s. They had the logistics chain pretty well down, but were very slow to adopt/adapt tactics suitable for the Afghan experience...especially as you noted, once the Afghans got hold of some more sophisticated weapon systems.
He is our mistake. Can we give him to them and call it even?
WHAT? No way is that a real cover, Time isn’t that honest. If it is I am buying a subscription to Time lol!
The most anti-American US official in history?
Please don’t take this personally, but I disagree with your characterization of our action in Afghanistan as a “meat grinder”.
Iwo Jima was a “meat grinder”. We lost as many men each day on iwo Jima as we have lost on average in an entire year, each year since we have been in Afghanistan.
Our military have done an excellent job under the circumstances they have been asked to serve in, especially the way they have been increasingly stabbed in the back and asked to do ever more worthless missions since the Democrats took power in 2006.
Given how they are being increasingly ignored, underfunded, handcuffed and betrayed by the civilian (and some of their own) leadership, we should have brought them home in 2006.
I wish he’d pen a resignation letter!
This has now been officially denied by Susan Rice,
so chances are good it’s true, kinda puts Obama’s
panties in a twist. Who is he gonna piss off the most?
the Afghanis or us. We’ll see.
... aka a Constitutional declaration of war. But then that would require our leaders to have the will to vaporize every last person in Afghanistan.
OMG, that made me laugh out loud all by myself!
(especially the alllalalalalalalal)
My comment was not a condemnation of our honorable troops but a condemnation of the Afghan people as a collective carbuncle on the face of humanity that needs to be lanced, purged, and then disinfected.
Why don’t they just make him write:
“I am sorry I am so good at killing people”, 1,000 times?
Us, most likely, since that is his modus operandi.
