Obama reportedly to pen letter to Afghan people admitting 'mistakes,' as part of security deal

U.S. and Afghan officials reportedly have reached a tentative agreement on a critical security pact -- which would include President Obama writing a letter to the Afghan people acknowledging mistakes during the "war on terror."

According to Reuters, an Afghan spokesman said Tuesday that Obama agreed to write the letter, to be presented with the draft security pact at a meeting of tribal elders later this week.

The New York Times, citing a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, reported that Secretary of State John Kerry proposed the letter in a conversation with Karzai.

Karzai asked that Obama sign it, and Kerry reportedly agreed. The letter apparently helped them reach a tentative deal authorizing U.S. raids on Afghan homes in certain circumstances, which had been an area of disagreement.

Why would *what* work? Obama & Co. resigning en masse?
Like Clinton, this crowd has no shame, no love of country.
They won’t leave unless he’s impeached by the House and removed by the senate.
Recall Nixon in 1960 and 1974. Whatever you think of him, he could have fought like algore in `60 and Klintoon in `74, but maybe he figured it was best for the country to concede.
He had his reasons, but I wish he had fought. Kennedy and Johnson stole the election and a third-rate burglary doesn’t begin to amount to even one of the many impeachable offenses committed by organ grinder Jarrett and her trained monkey.

I think the punk should grovel. But he should be groveling for what he is doing - and not groveling on behalf of us!

"Actually, the Rooskies were doing a good job in the ‘80s before the American Stinger missiles made the helicopter gunships ineffective."

A fascinating read is The Bear Went over the Mountain, which is a compilation of lessons learned from a Russian military perspective. There is also a companion book, The Other Side Of The Mountain, which is essentially the Afghan perspective.

In short, my take on it was that the old military adage about amateurs talking tactics and professionals talking logistics was turned inside out for the Soviets in the 80s. They had the logistics chain pretty well down, but were very slow to adopt/adapt tactics suitable for the Afghan experience...especially as you noted, once the Afghans got hold of some more sophisticated weapon systems.

Please don’t take this personally, but I disagree with your characterization of our action in Afghanistan as a “meat grinder”.

Iwo Jima was a “meat grinder”. We lost as many men each day on iwo Jima as we have lost on average in an entire year, each year since we have been in Afghanistan.

Our military have done an excellent job under the circumstances they have been asked to serve in, especially the way they have been increasingly stabbed in the back and asked to do ever more worthless missions since the Democrats took power in 2006.

Given how they are being increasingly ignored, underfunded, handcuffed and betrayed by the civilian (and some of their own) leadership, we should have brought them home in 2006.

This has now been officially denied by Susan Rice,
so chances are good it’s true, kinda puts Obama’s
panties in a twist. Who is he gonna piss off the most?
the Afghanis or us. We’ll see.

MeganC @4: "Mistake #1: Going into Afghanistan absent the will to kill every last person in that country."

... aka a Constitutional declaration of war. But then that would require our leaders to have the will to vaporize every last person in Afghanistan.

The only thing 0bama should say in the letter is: we are leaving, if we have to come back, we will level your mountains, and establish Gehenna on your land.
