Senate Dems weaken GOP power with major filibuster rule change

Senate Democrats bowled over Republicans on Thursday to win approval for a highly controversial rule change which would limit the GOP's ability to block nominees.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, moving quickly following days of speculation, used the so-called "nuclear option" to pass the change. Typically, major changes like this take 67 votes, but he did it with just a simple majority.

With Republicans fuming, the change weakens the power of the minority to stall nominations for top positions. Instead of needing 60 votes to break a filibuster, the change means Democrats will now need just 51.

It works the other way around, too - when the GOP gets to do it. I can already hear them screaming about it, when it happens to them.

The next Republican president should make Miguel Estrada his first appointment. Assuming, of course, that Estrada is still interested in being a judge.

This cuts both ways. Since the dems play scorched earth politics more ruthlessly than the Republicans, I suspect that we may be the long term gainers.

You and I would simply pack the Federal courts with 2 judges to offset the marxist judges of obamasoetoro and reid once the Senate and WH flip.

BUT, the GOP is the Stupid Party. You know they won`t do that.

The hugeness will more than likely be reflected when and if the Republicans gain control of the Senate, then when following the rules they will be trashed as “unfair”. Reid may rue the day. Then again...

Let me get this straight..

The Fascists (Democrats) are upset that the Republicans are stonewalling their march towards a totalitarian state by invoking totalitarian power in the Senate.

WHY EVEN BOTHER HAVING A VOTE ON ANYTHING ANYMORE? What's the point of voting if any effort to resist Fascism is futile?

The very thing that the Republicans are trying to fight has become a chilling reality.

FUHR!!!

What’s the big deal?

With McCain, Graham, Collins, Cornyn, etc., the Democrats never had a problem getting 60 votes.

This just saves everybody time.

And the one screaming the loudest will be Juan McCain.

"rule change which would limit the GOP's ability to block nominees. "

So why hasn't Mitch been using the filibuster to beat Dingy like a drum?

Was he saving it for something more important?

“What goes around comes around. When these filthy pigs get the boot in 2014, that will be the end of any 0bamunist appointments”

Dems will just change rules again before the Senate switches and then cry like stuffed pigs if the republicans try the same thing. Republicans, being spineless weasels, will give in and be back to 60 for filibuster override.

It happens all the time. Dems are lawless thugs who need to be stopped in an overwhelming way to even come close to getting this country on the right track again.

Professional crooks cover all options. There is language in what was forced through that says if the Senate changes hands, rules revert back to a super-majority.Rules and laws only apply to republicans.
