California's health exchange spurns Obama directive

SACRAMENTO -- In a stunning rebuke to President Barack Obama's directive that would allow millions of Americans to extend their current health insurance policies through 2014, California on Thursday joined several other states in declining the offer.

The five-member board of Covered California, the state's health insurance exchange, voted unanimously to continue building on its momentum of successfully enrolling tens of thousands of people in new health care plans through the exchange.

"Delaying the transition will not solve a single problem. It will just make it more difficult and confusing,'' said board member Susan Kennedy. "Delaying will only make a bad situation worse.''

At today's board meeting of California's new health insurance exchange, Covered California, exchange Executive Director Peter Lee also released the first demographic data related to the enrollment of 30,830 people who signed up for a health care plan under the state exchange through Oct. 31. And the data shows that 18-34 year olds -- often dubbed the "young invincibles" -- are applying in direct proportion to California's population.

Because California is considered a bellwhether for the success of the new health law, Lee's announcement was the first encouraging news for the law's supporters in weeks after the disastrous launch of the federal website and revelations that insurers are canceling the policies of millions of people across the U.S. who have health plans that don't conform to the new law.

"The good news is that young people 18 to 34 are enrolling for coverage at the same rate as the population,'(continued)

The "directive" isn't workable, feasible, or tenable.

It would have had to have been made a year ago to be any of the above.

Also, the directive isn’t legal. Obozo has no legal authority to arbitrarily change a law that Congress passed and that he signed. Not like it’s stopped him before, but still...

It’s like jumping out of the boat into the river as you’re going over the falls. There’s no escaping the inevitable ride. They can only hope that there aren’t too many rocks at the bottom.

Tens of thousands? If true, I bet they are all enrolling in Medicaid.

Actually, he and Cruella have every right to change the RULES, because there are hundreds of references to "...be determined later by the HHS secretary..." in the BILL that Pelosi correctly stated needed to be passed before we would find out what was in it.

The BILL ended up being about 2,000 pages. There have already been 20,000 pages of RULES added since then, and expect at least 20,000 more before it goes live next year - including Obama's "Fix" and the soon-to-come "Un-fix" when he decides to cancel everyone's plans and go to single payer.

Then I would argue that the bill is unconstitutional because Congress cannot cede its law-making powers to the executive branch.

Blue states like CA that expanded Medicaid need those cancelled people to join their exchanges to pay for the millions of new Medicaid enrollees. Red states that didn’t don’t.

The article mentions “Obama’s directive”. Obama did not “direct” anything. He just asked the insurance companies to ignore the law for a year.

The even better news of that 18-35 demographic is that not one has paid a single tribute to honor his highness’ dicta, moreover, they won’t.

I know several people in that demo and to a person they swoon and believe, absolutely, they will receive not just healthcare but, superior care and attention compared to what they currently receive.

Qwayzee...

The only people that could possibly be signing on would be those that would qualify for medical.
