SAN ANTONIO She is in.
Braving the frigid Saturday morning weather, hundreds of supporters of state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte packed a college gym and were treated to a mariachi concert and to a widely anticipated political announcement: The San Antonio lawmaker is running for lieutenant governor, joining the Democratic ticket headed by her Texas Senate colleague Wendy Davis.
Havent you been paying attention to the Republican primary race for lieutenant governor? Van de Putte asked the partisan crowd. It gets wackier every day.
Theyre all trying to out-extremist one another, Van de Putte said in reference to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and his three challengers. Thats why I announce that Ill ask the people of Texas to hire me to be your next lieutenant governor.
Van de Puttes announcement received statewide press coverage because pundits and even Republicans agree it is the first time in 12 years the Democratic Party of Texas has two candidates who energize its base and also have the potential to appeal to three key constituencies independent voters, women and Hispanics.
If elected, Van de Putte would be the first Hispanic and the first female lieutenant governor. The lieutenant governor is widely considered the most powerful office in Texas because, as the presiding officer of the Texas Senate, the officeholder controls the legislative agenda.
A sixth-generation Texan, the 58-year-old Van de Putte reminded her audience in English and Spanish she and her husband Pete still live in the barrio (the neighborhood) where she grew up and raised her six children.
In the Republican camp, Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Todd Staples are taking on Dewhurst in the March 4 Republican primary. Patterson and Staple both served in the Senate as well.
Although Van de Putte didnt go into detail about her priorities as lieutenant governor, she said that while the Republican candidates have bickered amongst themselves, funding for neighborhood public schools has been cut by billions of dollars.
Class sizes have swelled, and too often were losing our best teachers, she said. Texas is investing less in our schoolchildren than almost any other state.
And she reminded her audience she and Davis are a team.
As lieutenant governor, Ill make sure womens voices will truly be heard in shaping these decisions, she said in reference to a bill guaranteeing women would make the same pay as men doing the same job. Davis pushed the legislation in this years session, but Gov. Rick Perry vetoed it.
When I am lieutenant governor Ill fight to pass that bill again, so that it can be signed into law by Gov. Wendy Davis, Van de Putte said as her audience cheered.
Davis welcomed Van de Puttes announcement with the same enthusiasm.
Sen. Van de Puttes dedication representing the interests of all Texans makes her an outstanding choice for lieutenant governor, Davis said in a statement. She has delivered for our veterans and small businesses, and like many Texans, I am excited about her announcement.
The Republican candidates for lieutenant governor are ready for Van de Putte, too.
Itll be a very interesting campaign to compare her pretty liberal views on growing the state of Texas and my views, which are more conservative and in the mainstream in the state of Texas, Dewhurst said last week after telling reporters he expects to win his partys primary without a runoff.
Patrick, Patterson and Staples blame him for Davis quick rise to political stardom. On June 25, Davis filibustered a restrictive abortion bill for 11 hours. The Republican-dominated Legislature passed it three weeks later anyway.
Staples used Van de Puttes announcement to take on the Davis-Van de Putte ticket and Dewhurst, too.
Sen. Van de Puttes announcement is another reminder that conservatives are in desperate need of new leadership, Staples said in a statement. Energized Texas Democrats are the result of the failed leadership of David Dewhurst.
By allowing Democrats to take over the Senate, Dewhurst made a national hero out of Wendy Davis, Staples said.
Texas Democratic Party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said he is not worried about attacks from Dewhurst, Staples, Patterson and Staples.
We hope Staples is their nominee because he would be the easiest to beat, Hinojosa said. He represents the extremely extreme right wing of the Republican party.
The same goes for Dewhurst, Patrick and Patterson, Hinojosa said.
All they represent is the extreme wing of the Republican Party, the tea party voters and thats it, Hinojosa said. Leticia Van de Putte represents mainstream Texas, she represents middle class Texas families
people can relate to that.
I have never heard of her.
Pinging the Texas list! Opinions anyone?
I have heard of her, but I admit that I know little about her other than she is a Lefty.
Leticia Van de Putte is “hispanic”? Is her hubby Pete also a “hispanic?”
Guilty of anything and everything!
The Lt Governor for GOP will get bigger vote % than the governor, so they have to be with the grassroots of Texas against tuition for illegals.
The Gubernatorial candidate wants to reform Rick Perry’s tuition rather than full repeal. It is a bad move imo by him. He could lose to a rightwing third party candidate. He should agree to sign whatever the legislature gives to him on tuition. Why dont Dems have an Hispanic at the top of the ticket if it is so important. Only 20% of ballots cast in Texas are by hispanics.
The true definition of “Coyote Ugly”! GUILTY AS CHARGED!
I’m sure that’s right...she’s a big supporter of the baby killer Davis!
Gotta work hard this time to make sure that Texas doesn’t go the way of the feds! Ugh!
She was one of the “Killer D’s”-remember?
I’m supporting Jerry Patterson.
A lot of uninformed people might vote for her because she has a funny name.
I haven’t decided yet, but I will vote for whoever wins the primary in the fall, but won’t do so for U.S. Senator and land commissioner, no Cornball and no more Bushes.
I probably “lean Patrick”. Dewhurst would be fourth choice.
Van de Putte a sock in it!
Texas Lt Gov race ping!
The same goes for Dewhurst, Patrick and Patterson, Hinojosa said.
All they represent is the extreme wing of the Republican Party, the tea party voters and thats it, Hinojosa said.
Got that? ALL of the Repubbie nominees represent the "extremely extreme right wing of the Repub party".
Leticia Van de Putte represents mainstream Texas, she represents middle class Texas families people can relate to that.
Oh, okay...we'll see how Texans relate to *that*.
Van de Who?
That's too bad. I could only vote for them if they hail from the extremely extreme extremist right wing of the GOP.
What are you, some kind of pinko?
They have to be from the extremely extreme extremist of the extreme, so extreme, they need to come up with a different word than 'extreme' to describe it, extremist right wing of the GOP.
I have never heard of her.
She among others were the group [Texas Eleven] that fled the state in the 2003
Redistricting battle that finally put the GOP in the majority of CDs.
She is as far left as abortion Barbie, queen Sheila, Hank Johnson, Maxine waters, dingy hairy and San Fran Nan. May as well include 0 bummer in that list.
She is particularly virulent commie.
Couches everything in “For the Children”
She led the runout of the other Texas commies over redistricting
Just plain scum
I gathered she must be after reading more. I really hadn’t heard of her before this.
Pray for Texas. We do NOT need a regime here like we have in DC! Texans MUST stand together on this!
Abortion Barbie gets a faithful sidekick.
Do they run as a combined slate on the ballot, or elected separately?
I really hadnt heard of her before this.
She was basically the leader of the 11 Texas state Senators who fled to NM
during all the redistricting efforts in 2003. Perry had to call extra
sessions just to deal with it. Google:
The more I see and hear, the more I cringe. Pray for Texas!!
Wendy Davis and Leticia Van de Putte
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
She hasn’t official filed yet but has until Dec. 9 to do so. The following link gives candidates
that have filed by county. You have to select Travis county to get State wide candidates.
Opinion? Mine just got flushed. She and Sheila are cut from the same cloth.
Abortion Barbie and Barrio Boopsie.
She and queen Sheila are similar types.
van de putz is always in the San Antonio media.
I have Putte is a putz!!!
Any of the candidates we have now on the Republican side would whoop that azz in the general election...
And that even includes Dewhurst AND Patrick...If they manage to make the cut in March...
But I believe it’ll be against Patterson or Staples...
Both of whom do not offend me...
Eaker, (do you remember) was she one of those shlups up on the stage there at the “welcome home” party (in Houston) they threw for these idiots???
I don’t recall seeing her at that event...
At that family meeting 23 years ago, Nicholes little sister Isabella asked,
why does mommy wanna be a state episentative??
With the wisdom of a 10 year old, Nichole responded "because theres
not enough mommies there!"
Nicole was exactly right, and 23 years later, Nicole is still exactly right -
there arent enough mommies in Austin at the state capitol, am I right?
“Pro life” means pro baby murder
“Family values” means perverted homos deserve to raise children
“Welcoming to everyone” means amnesty for illegals
“Taking care of everyone” means raising taxes and pushing Obamacare
These two will lie as much or more than BHO!
Neither do I.
Nasty bunch of people though.
Kinda smelly too...
You did wash that hand right??? [snicker]
