Years ago, on a perfect Hanukkah day, my brother and I were getting off the Coney Island bumper cars on the way to kosher country, when we heard "Dirty Jews!"
Before having a chance to react in anger or fear, two boys were running full speed away from us.
Knowing they were not running from a 7-year-old in a plaid shirt or his slow moving 11-year-old brother, I imagined that the hand of God had descended from the cyclone. But, spotting a speeding Judah Maccabee chasing down those thugs, to my amazement and some chagrin, the Maccabee was none other than my usually passive intellectual of a dad. He held the boys hard by the collars against the screaming protestations of their own bigger and way meaner looking dad, who was screaming "Let my boys go or else!"
My dad did not budge, finally releasing the two to cops who happened to be walking by.
I learned perseverance and Jewish pride at that moment, but confidence was the days greatest lesson. Not the confidence of physical strength, which my dad took no pride in, not confidence in the 1970s NYPD, which did not exist. It was the simple, undeniable yet taken for granted confidence of a proud Jew. We are your equals, we are here, we have a state of our own, so, in NYC parlance, F*** you.
Rewind to a Coney Island before the establishment of the State of Israel, and Im sure a very different story would have been told: our own collars held by a timid father forcing an apology from his own sons. We are so sorry for wearing our kippot on the bumper cars thank you for calling us dirty Jews please, feel free to do it again at the Ferris wheel
Which brings us to the double knockout weekend.
Knockout #1 took place last Friday in Crown Heights, when a religious photo intern got knocked down. A 100 lb little Jew as Israel Blizovsky described himself, punched for the fun of it... Ha ha. City Governments nonchalant response was pretty close to Whats the big deal, you Jews worry too much.
Knockout # 2 took place on the other side of the globe, in the Genteel city of Geneva, where diplomats, not thugs, knocked down Israel a peg or two while dismissing the Jewish States existential threat with the same Whats the big deal, you Jews worry too much.
Over thanksgiving and Christmas, let us hope that the nations of the world will continue to support the idea of an independent and secure Jewish nation, a nation that will sometimes be battered, sometimes bruised but with its own pride and the means to always get back up.
As we put our faith in these nations, especially our greatest friend the United States of America, we must remember the central lesson of Hanukkah; never rely on others or on miracles, but when our very existence is in the balance, we must be prepared to fight a lonely battle to victory.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

But yet the Jews rely on the Democrat Party as if it were their link to life.
Slowly but surely most Jews will come to realize the inherent danger and true nature of the Democratic Party.
My advice: become aware of what is going on around you, think for yourself, act accordingly.
well, lets do this first. can we be honest? can we call a spade a spade? Obama is the face of American power, he may or may not be a muslim, he may or may not use his half black side as his trump, but American jews wield great power, and if anyone has allowed Obama to desert Israel, they should be first in line to take the blame.
now, with that said, i’m not sure who this guy thinks he’s looking to blame.
You must realize, as I and others do, that as long as the archenemy occupies the White Hut things are going to get worse.
Stupid New York jewry keeps voting for idiots who care nothing for Jews....only their votes. Negroes serve on the Democrat plantation while Jews happily march through voting booths on their way to a concentration camp.
Israelis, especially the esteemed Benjamin Netanyahu, understand what must be done and may, just may, run roughshod over this puke we call president on their way to settle a problem with Muslims once and for all.
Ah, for a return to the exciting days of 1967 if, left unrestrained by the clueless American government, they had continued on there would be a chain of Moshe Dyan gas stations in Egypt.
I recall the cover of Life magazine at that time where a sea of empty Egyptian combat boots covered the desert for a mile or so. This was because the brave Egyptians jumped out of their boots so they could run faster. An Egyptian Army scout had looked over a sand dune and spied an Israeli commando. Boy did they run!
Oh, I forgot who the Democrats’ capo is: Chuckie Schumer.
I think Jews have lost their fighting spirit.....at least against Muslims that want to KILL them. Now they still have their fighting spirit strong if a Christian wants to open a meeting with a prayer or if a city or state seal has a cross on it. VERY SAD.
Lord help us. Please speed it up a little!
Funny. Well the Jews are known as a stubborn stiff necked people. Give them time.
Silly me, I thought the lesson of Hannukah had more to do with God's faithfulness and mighty power than with His people's preparedness.
I realize that generalizations always have exceptions. I consider myself one of the exceptions. Having served in the US military for over 26 years, I think I still have the fighting spirit necessary to defend Israel if they ever need a grey beard ship captain or just an old man that knows how to use a weapon. I suspect there may be quite a few of us that would fight to the death to defend our ancestral homeland.
I have a far better chance of working out the math that finally proves the existence of Dark Matter than I do of ever figuring that one out. Seriously.
To my Jewish friends and Israeli correspondents,
May you have a good holiday and peace SHALL come
to Israel.
Am Israel Chai!

The two thugs in his story, from, “years ago” were “handed over to the cops”. What law had they broken, since this story happened, presumably, before “hate crimes” existed?
I had the same question, and was thinking half the story was BS, even if to make a valid point. I can’t see NYPD, now or at any time, looking kindly at one father grabbing another father’s kids for their calling his kids bad names.
