CNN and MSNBC Lose Almost Half Their Viewers in One Year (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
NewsBusters ^ | November 27, 2013 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 11/27/2013 1:34:49 PM PST by Zakeet

It's been a tough year for the liberal cable news outlets.

Data released Tuesday show CNN shedding 48 percent of total viewers since last November and MSNBC dropping 45 percent.

The numbers were even worse in the all important demographic of people aged 25 to 54 as CNN's ratings dropped 59 percent and MSNBC's 52 percent.

In an off-election year, and with last November's numbers skewed higher as a result of the presidential election, it should be expected for ratings to decline.

However, Fox News didn't see close to these losses. In total day, FNC is only down 18 percent since last November and 30 percent in the demo.

As you might imagine, prime time numbers were also down.

CNN was off 54 percent in total viewers and 62 percent in the demo. MSNBC declined 50 percent in total prime time viewers and 57 percent in the demo.

By contrast, FNC was second in all of cable in prime time this November averaging over 2 million viewers. This represented a decline of 21 percent in total viewers and 41 percent in the demo.

As such, no matter how you slice it, the liberal cable networks fared much worse in the past twelve months than their far more centrist competitor.

Viewership down - doesn’t matter. Obama will ensure they receive enough advertising money to keep going.

It’s not ad revenues, it’s their share of cable subscriptions…..

But either way, the viewership erosion is significant for other reasons….

I’ve never understood the CNN and MSNBC business model. If your goal is to make money through advertising, why would you intentionally alienate half of the potential viewers?

Some would say “they don’t care, they’re only in business to push the liberal-democrat agenda”. To which I say fine, but they’ve already got the hardcore liberal audience, how do they expect to change hearts and minds by preaching to the choir?

Whichever way you cut it, it makes no sense. Fox News has been beating them in every way simply by being centrist and not taking either side. Something they teach in Business 101.

CNN will very soon reach the point where the only way to lose more viewers is for people to spend less time at airports. This will be their “terminal velocity”.

The problem is that all of the above, including faux news, still have viewers. But happily, the viewers seem to be disappearing over time. I think a lot of it is websites like hulu that allow people to download content on demand. And also the fact that you can get a lot more information in less time on the web without the fake drama.

I don’t think MSNBC is actually real. Just turn it on for a few minutes. The sets look weird, the lighting is weird, the graphics are weird, even the sound is weird, and the hosts are veritable freak show. It looks like something The Matrix would come up with to approximate what a news network would look like.

Funny story. A few years ago in school, one of the academic buildings lobby had a small cafe. They had three TVs. Two were large flat screens mounted on the walls, one was a old 19” CRT mounted on a support colum in the corner of the room.

The flat screens almost always had ESPN on one of them, and either Fox News or Discovey, MTV, etc. The old 19” CRT in the corner always had CNN or MSNBC on, surrounded by the most miserable looking group of students and faculty. Anyone could walk up and change the channel, but I never saw anyone change it from Fox to CNN or PMSNBC.

Actually it just tells me libs are getting their propaganda dose from more “modern” portals.

The internet, social media, etc.

Cable tv (like newspapers) is an increasingly older demographic (other than sports programming) so it likely trends Republican.

You nailed it. Same with Hollywood. They will sacrifice anything -- ANYTHING, including profit or even survival -- to promote the New World Order. It's the marxist thing to do, to give your all to the Collective.

The issue isn't so much why the media and the movie makers are doing what they're doing, it's why their stockholders and directors allow them to do it.

This is true at the place where I have my oil changed also. Asked them why and they said CNN provided the TV and it’s part of the agreement their corporation signed with CNN. On this particular set all the other channels were blocked off. One of the other guys in the waiting room got up, turned it off and said somebody else could turn it back on after he left.

Last November was the Presidential election. It's not surprising viewership is down. FNC's relatively better numbers just indicate the frustration of liberals and their lack of interest in watching Obama implode.

Perhaps you didn't read the article, but the article indeed made it clear that a certain bleed from election year highs was expected, but this was dramatically outside the norm. As to the idea of watching Obama implode…I think that is why they are tuned out and what is significant about the entire story. To me, that Obama is imploding is more important per se than these cable outlets.

NONsense. IT’s ALL about the money:
They are just after the same ‘low-sales-resistance’ audience as the Democrats.

“MSNBC ranked #1 in weekend sales prime (Sa/Su 7p-2a) for the 7th consecutive month among A25-54.
MSNBC ranked #1 among African-American viewers in both A25-54 and total viewers in all key dayparts.
MSNBC ranked #1 among Hispanic viewers A25-54 in M-F primetime and M-Su primetime.”

The link doesn’t mention gender, but I’d bet a pony they are successful in the ‘dumb slut’ demographic too.
Advertisers LOVE these demographics.

CNN and MSNBC’s problem is they are fighting for the same demographics.

I believe that is only true as long as they have extra income. If their own personal revenues fall enough, they may be forced to consider actual product that appeals to an actual audience.

Imagine if robot or CGI actors become good enough that people will accept them. The popularity of anime points in that direction, already. What will the real human actors do then?

Actors do go broke and do become passe. If/when the bottom line become paramount, the directors and producers will do whatever it takes to regain the audience. Actually, that may be the impetus behind the reality shows.

Oh, they're not going to go broke themselves. They've got enough cash stashed that they don't ever have to worry about it. But they won't hesitate to drive their industry into the sewer. They already have.

Imagine if robot or CGI actors become good enough that people will accept them.

Speed the day! I give it another 10 years or so. Even the voices can be synthesized. Then Hollywood's monopoly is OVER. At least on the production side. Distribution is another matter, although the Internet will provide a populist medium for that.

What will the real human actors do then?

Go back to waiting tables and panhandling or giving head down at the bus station.

If/when the bottom line become paramount, the directors and producers will do whatever it takes to regain the audience.

Nope. They'll retire on the wealth they've accumulated in the meantime, leaving their "art" and their "craft" a shelled-out husk bereft of any integrity, value, or life.

Actually, that may be the impetus behind the reality shows.

No, those are insipid fabrications that cost little or nothing to produce and that pander to the trailer-park crowd. They're the last gasp of a dying -- and largely irrelevant -- medium.
