Radio giant Rush Limbaugh is scorching the leader of the Roman Catholic Church for criticizing unfettered capitalism, saying, “This is just pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the pope.”
“You know the pope, Pope Francis has issued an official papal proclamation, and it’s sad,” Limbaugh said on his national broadcast Wednesday. “It’s actually unbelievable. It’s sad because this pope makes it very clear he doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to capitalism and socialism and so forth.”
“I’m not Catholic,” Limbaugh added, “but up until this I admired the man.”
In the 84-page document titled “Evangelii Gaudium,” which was released Tuesday, Pope Francis called upon politicians to provide “dignified work, education and health care” to all citizens.
“The commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life,” wrote the pope. “Today we also have to say ‘thou shalt not’ to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills.”
Noting that he had visited the Vatican “numerous times,” Limbaugh observed wryly: “Believe me, it wouldn’t exist without tons of money. Somebody has either written this for [the pope] or gotten to him. This is pure Marxism.”

Marxism, democracy, Peronism, Stalinism, Maoism, socialism (national and international), communism, and others are all forms of collectivism.
I recall that JPII was not any more economic libertarian (small ‘l’) than Pope Francis, which was even more disappointing, considering his background. It seems that the Popes are not well informed in the area of economics, or else drift toward the impractical utopian visions of modern day socialists. Calling for alleviation of poverty is not the same as setting government policies.
I mean, let the Pope visit Silicon Valley or the special economic zones of China to discover what those free market areas have done for the poor.
When did China begin practicing unfettered capitalism? Also, the biggest polluters around the world are all socialist state run economies. Not even close.
I am Catholic and I agree. I am not offended because I know that we have our share of nut cases in the church.. This pope appears to be from the same wing of the church as Father Pfleger.

Since you’ve hit the nerve of the 3rd rail, I might as well give it a bear hug. So, here goes. I thought the only things Rush had in common with Henry VIII were his waistline, serial monogamy and an opulent lifestyle. Apparently Rush’s opinion of Catholicism dovetails with Henry VIII’s as well. But at least the long dead Tudor monarch actually had some understanding of theology.
Maybe a few decades of the sorrowful mysteries will get you right.

And here the Popes are echoing St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John Chrysostom, and somebody who said something to the effect that if you have two cloaks give one to the man who has none. In all cases, what was urged was that those with more than they need give to those who are in need—the Pope can not be faulted too much for putting for this teaching.
If he actually says that everything above what one needs ought to be taken by the government and given to someone else, I either have missed it or not gotten to it yet.
The first position is Christianity, the second is Marxism.
A third position, that what is mine is only for me and I need not take anyone else into account when using this wealth, smacks of what John Paul II called “practical atheism.”

Well, OK, but Silicon Valley 80 years ago was farms and poverty. And China, whatever the current working conditions has certainly moved its population upward economically. What better examples of ‘free market’ can we offer the Pope? I hear the (former Soviet) Baltics are doing well in this area.
You’re far too rational for this thread. Try beating your chest and denouncing the pope as a Marxist. You’ll fit in just fine with that red-meat sort of camouflage. While you’re at it, be sure to not actually read the document (like others in this thread) and to assume you know exactly what the pope means. Oh, and one more thing, forget about the whole idea of charity and responsibility for your fellow man. You know, those outmoded Christian ideas that just won’t fit into any thread like this. I’m just saying. . .
