Is there any interesting public news in your neck of the woods on this situation?

I think the Nike Hercules went obsolete 2 or 3 decades ago.

There are more islands and nations involved than what the BBC published. You see, some despotic regimes have been itching to take much more real estate for a long time (much more—countries). That’s what’s in the way of getting business done with Iran.
Save fuel. Use those bombers instead of only flying them round and round.

BTW, the BBC’s glaring omission was that of the Philippines. China’s been treading much too far that way, too. China wants to take some countries, yes. But she also wants some big ocean routes and has even eyeballed around the Indian Ocean quite a bit (thus, conflicts there, too, along with crossing and squatting inside the Indian borders at various point in recent years).

“The Chinese are betting that President Jarrett will back down, and that she won’t repeat the B-52 flyover.”
What’s scary is that Obama might think he actually *is* running the show and do something without getting permission.
Kind of like when Hilary, excited by the $100k “she” made investing in cattle futures, actually tried to do it on her own. Fail.

And Viet Nam. The PRC has also been mucking about with Viet Nam’s territorial waters.

Hey - Not much more than what is on the wire services gets in the engrish lingo papers here - of which there are tw0 (2):
The Taipei Times - very leftist and not much more than a mouthpiece for the DPP party
The China Post... www.chinapost.com.tw a more "conservative" paper with a broader base for the articles it puts up.
Neither has much in the way of actual "new reporting." Laughable is the best way to describe these efforts in both. Although, I do read the China Post much more than the TT.
All that is appearing in these two are the typical wire reports you are seeing CONUS.
Now there are also a whole lot of Chinese language papers, TV stations and radio stations that run the range of views, opinions, reportage and just plain BS. here.
They tell whatever the political monkey feces thrown their way tells them to report.

Unplanned?

Yesterday at a Thanksgiving Dinner, the man whose house hosted it told me that at the same time the US Embassy was taken over, the Russian embassy was also occupied. He said this was a little known fact.
He said the Russians immediately promised the Iranians that their country would cease to exist if they did not release the Russian hostages. The Iranians took that threat seriously and released them all.
Meanwhile Carter put his Fred Rogers sweater on and diddled around for a year.

I always took that and the Soviet response as a given fact. He should put that story in a book and sell it.

The route would be more like Tokyo or Osaka to Hong Kong, passing through the phony ADIZ Red Chinese zone near Okinawa that they have just unilaterally “established”. Pushing the envelope here, those guys......
