U.S. Advises Commercial Jets to Honor China’s Rules
The New York Times ^ | Friday, November 29, 2013 | Peter Baker and Jane Perlez

After an internal debate, the Obama administration has decided to tell American commercial airlines to comply with China's demands to be notified of any flights through a broad swath of international airspace that it has claimed as an air defense zone, officials said Friday.

Even as the United States continued to send military planes into the zone in defiance of China's declaration, officials said they expected civilian planes to go along with Beijing's new demands out of an abundance of caution. Officials said they were worried about an accident or unintended confrontation that could endanger civilian passengers.

The administration’s decision came hours after China said it had scrambled fighter jets for the first time since declaring the zone last week, a move that was seen by Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States as provocative.

The caution reflected in the administration’s decision contrasted with that by Japan's government, which told its civilian airlines not to abide by the Chinese rules after they initially began to voluntarily comply.

China’s assertion of jurisdiction over the airspace, designed to bolster its claim to islands administered by Japan, is not recognized by any of the major powers in the region but the American decision may irritate Tokyo.

Earlier Friday, in announcing it had scrambled jets, China said it had identified two American surveillance planes and 10 Japanese aircraft in its newly declared air defense zone

John Kerry will develop writer’s cramp signing so many surrender documents — and as a consequence apply for another Purple Heart. Thanks kristinn.

"Too bad they mothballed the USS Missouri, a cannon platform that could reduce these islands to shore rubble in 3 days....."

I have been to the Missouri...the people that take care of her (many retired Navy vets) told me that the Missouri could have a head of steam and be battle ready in very short order. Matter of weeks, they say.

That’s why this isn’t much of a story on the civilian air side. Every commercial IFR flight from here to anywhere is going to file an international flight plan which the Chicoms can read as easy as anyone. The statement allegedly from Japan saying don’t file a flight plan is pretty non-sensical and I guess I don’t even believe that part. Time for a BS flag——wwwhhhheeeeee-—there it goes.

I am somewhat ambivalent about this, since I would not wish to see innocent civilians killed.

Dittos. I don't like the idea of using the lives of innocent civilian airline passengers as pawns. If a country is threatening to shoot them down, avoid them until the argument is settled. I don't think that's "being a pansy."

I’m not so sure about that. When one owes so much to the bank that not paying it back can cause major problems to the bank, who is the true power? Or are we both caught in a mess.

I wish they would get her ready. Soon we will have to anchor a ship off those islands to insist on Japanese sovereignty, and there would be none batter that a battle wagon like the USS Missouri. Every time the Chi Coms send some one ashore, a volley or two would send them running. With a carrier group on station to assure air superiority, it would work like a charm.

The world knows the US has the WEAKEST president EVER.

Cowardly and likely disloyal to his own country.

Easy-peasy.

Dingdingding. The long and short of the matter is that not only has China outlived an amazing amount of predictions of their collapse, they have us by the economic short hairs. And thus the entire western world by extension.

Obummer literally cannot afford to honk them off, much less start a shooting war that would quickly see their slave labor and manufactured goods vanish. Our economy wouldn’t last one week without a 24/7/365 flow of cheap ChiCom goods.

"A nuclear armed Japan? The hell with that. China taking over Japan would be better than that."

So you would be more worried about Japan than China? A lot has changed since WWII. Modern Japan poses no threat to us. Modern China is something else entirely.
