The rising power of Russias Vladimir Putin was in stark display this week as he commanded an audience with Pope Francis and then forced the pontiff to wait for almost an hour for the face-to-face meeting. The pope waited on Mr. Putin to show for 40 minutes, Religion News Service reported. And Bloomberg put the wait-time even higher, at 50 minutes.
The meeting this week was billed as a historic summit between the two power-players, and went forth behind closed doors, for about 35 minutes. Both Mr. Putin and the pope are in agreement about the need to bring a diplomatic wrap to the years-long conflict in Syria.
The meeting underscored Mr. Putins rising clout in the world and many pundits noted the absence of President Obama in such a powwow.

No doubt the Won will consider the new America more a comfortable place for he and his family to live.
Who’s that on the left?
When I was in Israel last month for a pilgrimage, I was told on more than one occasion by the locals that Mr. Putin is re-establishing the Russian presence in Israel
Pretty tacky of Putin. The Pope is a Head of State. Typical behavior by Obama, who can vote ‘present’ or even ‘not present’ more often than anyone.
Tacky but the thing about any Christian, he or she can pray and spend that time with God. So waiting is no big deal. I doubt whether Francis even noticed.
What the heck does that mean? At least 15% of the population is Russian/Soviet born, including a lot of Russian mafia-types as well as non-Jews.
There were so many socialists in the Israeli elites that the USSR thought Israel would be pro-Soviet when it was established in 1948.
A Massachusetts liberal who lost an election partly because he said our biggest international threat is Russia
I’m sorry, I should have been more specific. I was told by the local Christians that Putin was trying to recover Russian Orthodox property they had lost/given up on over the Soviet years. Make more sense? Was just passing along some comments from people I spoke with in Jerusalem and Jericho.
OK, I see, although the process has been going on for at least 15 years. Some places have been reclaimed (after having been sold by the Communist rulers of the USSR), and Mahmoud Abbas promised Putin about anything he wants for the Russian Church.
Pope and Putin,,,”obama who?”
And we don’t even have an ambassador now.
The pope should have pull an LBJ on Putin. “Ooh, I’ve been waiting a long time here. I need to go to the bathroom first before we talk.”
