Washington Post Op-Ed Goes Viral: End Presidential Term Limits (With Poll to FReep)

An op-ed in the Washington Post went viral this week as it drew controversy advocating for an end to presidential term limits.

In the piece, bluntly titled “End presidential term limits,” New York University history professor Jonathan Zimmerman suggests that the 22nd Amendment limiting presidents to two terms of office should be repealed as a way to assuring a more effective presidency and protecting democracy from a leader without fear of voters’ wrath.

Citing the treatment of President Obama in the wake of his troubled Affordable Care Act rollout and a nuclear deal with Iran, Zimmerman argued that if Obama could run again, he might not be facing such “fervent objections” on the former from Democratic leaders like Bill Clinton; and, on the latter, from Sens. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ).

“Democratic lawmakers would worry about provoking the wrath of a president who could be reelected. Thanks to term limits, though, they’ve got little to fear,” Zimmerman wrote, adding that a term-limited president does not “have to fear the voters, which might be the scariest problem of all.”

“If he chooses,” the professor continued, “[a term-limited president] could simply ignore their will. And if the people wanted him to serve another term, why shouldn’t they be allowed to award him one?”

Ultimately, Zimmerman concluded:

It’s time to put that power back where it belongs. When Ronald Reagan was serving his second term, some Republicans briefly floated the idea of removing term limits so he could run again. The effort went nowhere, but it was right on principle. Barack Obama should be allowed to stand for re election just as citizens should be allowed to vote for — or against — him. Anything less diminishes our leaders and ourselves.

What do you think? Should the 22nd Amendment be repealed and presidential term limits be overturned? Take our poll below:

Just like Obama has fake twitter followers this piece going ‘viral’ is probably more a function of some Dem war room antics paid for by George Soros.

Blacks are democrats largest voting block but they’re not techies... I don’t believe this went viral. Feels like a lie.

IMHO, the two-term amendment keeps this society from using more lethal means of removing a sitting politician. Just remember what goes around, comes around!

When I followed the link “YES” was already selected on the poll and there was no way to unselect it!

My thought, too.

How about one term for members of the House and Senate, also?

NYU has rapidly become one of the top universities to promote marxism and authoritarianism. Guess Prof. Zimmerman is the new kid on the “bloc”.

Hey, if you don’t like the Constitution, ignore it (Obama) or change it (Obama asskissers and worshippers).

Gee, it really looks like the Republicans/conservatives are the real defenders of the Constitution, which they have bothered to read (Plus the Federalist papers, Madison and Jefferson papers, etc).

Ask a Democrat what the Constitution is, and they reply, our daily workout to keep our bodies pure.

With a massive pool of low-education voters, Obama would be crowned king of the plantation ad infinitum. He won his victory almost before he was born when the communists decided, as one of their multi-pronged attacks on America, to infiltrate the schools and pervert and warp what children used to be taught about our country.

And they succeeded. When Bill the terrorist Ayers (and friend of the President) is looked upon by many major universities and foundations as a leader in education, then you know that something major is wrong with our system.

Those who were young children in the late 60’s and early 70’s are now low- education voters on the Democratic plantation. No Jim Crow anymore but a new slavemaster, the welfare/freebies Democratic Party led by its marxist wing.

And now you know some of the story.
