The Horrific Story That Prompted David Horowitz’s Conservative Transformation
The Blaze ^ | 12-3-2013 | Erica Ritz

David Horowitz, author of The Black Book of the American Left and the founder and president of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, has spoken at length about how he was raised by “card-carrying communists” who always “described themselves as progressives.” He followed in their footsteps, becoming one of the founders of the New Left in 1960′s, which he described as an organization “formed by children of communists who wanted to get away from the taint that Stalin had put on (communism), and revive the vision.”

So what made the born-and-raised communist become the staunch conservative and defender of American liberties that he is today? Among other things, he explained on the Glenn Beck Program Tuesday, it was a deadly encounter with the Black Panthers.

Great interview with Horowitz yesterday. He discusses Obamacare. "Obamacare is the communist future."

Kudos to Mr. Horowitz for this. Many more were silent, still are, and many never find the courage to stand up against what their nearest and dearest will then throw at them.

His excellent book Radical Son discusses it in detail...it was a rude awaking for him, one that many liberals never get.

I visited my mother and father over the weekend. Unusually, we didnt argue politics. My father is over 80, a retired union shop steward, and in ill health.

It is not courage that prevented me from standing up against him. it was kindness.

I think many are in your situation, and I wasn’t considering personal conversations that would cause harm, just public stands like Horowitz has taken.

“When Lenin set out to transform, fundamentally transform Russia, he didn’t say he was going to kill 40 million people, create famines and concentration camps called gulags,” Horowitz remarked. “He said he was going to give them bread, land, and peace.” …
This should have been trumpeted out of every TV screen in every home in the USA.

I heard him discuss on radio years back. Horrifying indeed - though perhaps not so to such as Bill Ayers.

It would be nice if Horowitz apologized to Diana West about his excoriation of her book “American Betrayal”.

I really have no use for these people when they get transformed in their 40’s. I became a conservative at age 30-1984. Reagan was running for reelection and I was transformed. Something tells me it’s opportunism.

If Horowitz is an opportunist where were you in 1980 when Reagan ran the first time?

If you were 30 in 1984 and you were born ~ 1954 where were you philosophically in 1964 with Goldwater?

So what if you were 10 years old. I was handing out Goldwater bumper stickers as a 6 year old along with my parents behind-liberal-lines in Rhode Island. We first supported Reagan for President in 1968.

If you didn't wake up to Reagan until the 1984 landslide, one might rightly wonder about your own "opportunism."

I suspect that Horowitz has accomplished more for the cause of conservatism by having become a convert to it, and by enunciating principles of conservatism as articulately as he does.

"And of course, Obama, Jarrett, and David Axelrod are comfortable parts of this left … They’ve carried on the agendas. That’s why the country is suffering the way it is.”

That should be "Left" (capital 'L'). That's why I've always said there's nothing "Liberal" or "Progressive" about what's going on. These are hardcore, collectivist, leg breakers. True believers, who will send you and your entire family to the gas chambers. Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn was addressing young ideologues much like David Horowitz when he said, "You extol the virtues of communism because you have never been forced to live under it."

So an accident of birthdate equals opportunism?

My timing was similar, but I was born in 1943. Sux to be me, I guess.

He details this life-changing event in his book “Radical Son”. I highly recommend this.
