At the end of September, the federal government's fiscal year was drawing to a close, the threat of a shut down was increasing, and the State Department was shopping for art. Four contracts were awarded in the last two weeks of September, including $1,000,000 for a granite sculpture by Irish-born artist Sean Scully to be installed at the new U.S. Embassy in London. Notice of the awards was posted Sunday afternoon of Thanksgiving weekend on the Federal Business Opportunities website.

The Blarney Stone.
i scarcely know what do say.
ive seen a lot of bad art....but a million bucks for anything this boy wunder...is selling is about 999K too much.
will barry be flying in the the installation?
He must have the gift of blarney to be getting hard cash for that type of sculpture! lol
rofl...yeah that was about my reaction too!
We need to cut the government spending in HALF as a start
To make my thoughts on this more clear, in these hard times expenditures like this - $1,000,000 for a (most likely subpar) sculpture are outrageous!
Granted, that’s along with a host of other things including multimillion dollar vacations for 0 and family...
No you guys, this is good. Our ambassador can hide behind it when the locals storm the gates over a cartoon or hideous video.
So now they have an Al Quaida statue and an IRA statue.
When will they have the Stuffed Arafat?
The first thing I would abolish are funds and grants to non-government organizations like NPR, PBS, Planned Parenthood, agri-subsidies, all forms of corporate welfare and the like
Art is anything that appeals to our sense of the sublime.
Them things—whatever they is—is as purty as a mud fence.
Fools and our money are soon parted.
[do I really need the /s here?] :)
50 years from now, local farmers will have carried it off, piecemeal, to repair their barns.
Are you SERIOUS????? THAT IS CRAP!!!!
I was just out in the yard piling up some cinder blocks and bricks.
I’m charging $99.99 for each sculpture.
[$129.99 for the ones that have moss on ‘em...they’re ‘living art’]
Get ‘em while they last!
hhhmmmmm...what a great idea. Take construction waste, dump it in a field, and you’ve polluted the field. Call it art and it’s worth a fortune.
Ok, I’m a starving artist carving stone. I will sell this sculpture to anyone for one tenth of that price.
Check out the link to the artist’s website (it’s in the article).
Don’t miss his “works on paper”. OMG, “clever” ain’t the word, lol.
I saw them. Looks like an 3rd grader doodle.
Throw in a few odd bugs or frogs and you’ve created a national park/wildlife sanctuary.
I could have done it for about $30. buy Bricks at Home Depot...
...and the government criminals tell us they don’t have enough money for veterans’ health benefits, commissaries and so forth. This isn’t public art. It is crap.
“Our ambassador can hide behind it when the locals storm the gates over a cartoon or hideous video.”
Or, you know, when it’s an Al Qaida plot to kill Americans...
My thought is $1,000,000 would pay for a good number of well-armed Marines!
I know darned well which one I’d rather have on hand!!!
"The government fiscal year was coming to a close....."
You have to know how governments on all levels work when it comes to budgets.
If they haven't spent their year's allotted budget they will indulge in an orgy of spending the last couple months so their next year's budget will not be slashed and will remain the same or more (a COL increase will generally by added to the new year's budget).
You can bet other bureaucracies across the fruited plain are spending like crazy this month to use up the rest of their 2013 budgeted dollars so they won't be cut in the new year on the grounds they didn't need all that money in 2013.
Dang you're sharp!
“Are you SERIOUS????? THAT IS CRAP!!!!”
An excellent analysis! Are you an art critic? ;-)
Looks like a pile of end cuts from a quarry, waiting to be hauled off to the crusher.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list

This is the same State Department that claimed they didn’t have enough money to provide adequate security at Benghazi, right?
He's most noted for his painting, and this is (apparently) his masterpiece:
Wikipedia also had the following helpful guide to his "work":
Scully's paintings are often made up of a number of panels and are abstract. Scully paints in oils, sometimes laying the paint on quite thickly to create textured surfaces. After a brief initial period of hard-edge painting Scully abandoned the masking tape while retaining his characteristic motif of the stripe which he has developed and refined over time. His paintings typically involve architectural constructions of abutting walls and panels of painted stripes. In recent years he has augmented his trademark stripes by also deploying a mode of compositional patterning more reminiscent of a checkerboard. He has stated that this style represents the way in which Ireland has moved towards a more chequered society. He stated in 2006, "I remember growing up in Ireland and everything being chequered, even the fields and the people."
Shockingly ;-) Wikipedia made no mention of his sculptural greatness...
What an amazing talent! I think this may be the kind of "Cowboy poet" artist Pelosi had in mind with her 0care pitch...
That is exactly correct!
Apparently Sean couldn’t make it as a stone mason.
That is the most ornate dog turd I have ever seen. Is that one of Sean’s droppings too?
“You have to know how governments on all levels work when it comes to budgets.”
And that is where the GAO should come in as a check to say that this is a waste of taxpayer dollars.
One major problem is the GAO is not working effectively.
OK, fine. The State Department will go with their first choice:
Great, except that one has cost around $10,000,000,000,000 so far... :-P
That is our turd of San Jose, CA? How dare you insult our POS!
It’s suppose to represent “Quetzacoatl” the Aztec& Mayan Deity.
Their POS couldn’t match our awesome God, so it deserted its people and they stopped challenging us quite a few years ago, once they acknowledged their inferiority.
Seems our God can step in anything he wants and then just scrape it off the bottom of his feet in a briar patch.
Chuck Norris showed him how to do that and now God calls on him for any new thoughts on excercising being all powerful....and that...
I’m sorry. I had no idea what a speshul turd it is.
those drawings appear to be ACTUAL SIZE!
it does require a degree to sense that this poor schlub got his start...in art therapy...
If a piece of “art” looks like it was thrown together by a 12 year old then its not art.
