At the end of September, the federal government's fiscal year was drawing to a close, the threat of a shut down was increasing, and the State Department was shopping for art. Four contracts were awarded in the last two weeks of September, including $1,000,000 for a granite sculpture by Irish-born artist Sean Scully to be installed at the new U.S. Embassy in London. Notice of the awards was posted Sunday afternoon of Thanksgiving weekend on the Federal Business Opportunities website.

Oh...sorry.

I was just out in the yard piling up some cinder blocks and bricks.

I’m charging $99.99 for each sculpture.
[$129.99 for the ones that have moss on ‘em...they’re ‘living art’]

Get ‘em while they last!

;D

hhhmmmmm...what a great idea. Take construction waste, dump it in a field, and you’ve polluted the field. Call it art and it’s worth a fortune.

Ok, I’m a starving artist carving stone. I will sell this sculpture to anyone for one tenth of that price.

Check out the link to the artist’s website (it’s in the article).

Don’t miss his “works on paper”. OMG, “clever” ain’t the word, lol.

Throw in a few odd bugs or frogs and you’ve created a national park/wildlife sanctuary.

...and the government criminals tell us they don’t have enough money for veterans’ health benefits, commissaries and so forth. This isn’t public art. It is crap.

“Our ambassador can hide behind it when the locals storm the gates over a cartoon or hideous video.”

Or, you know, when it’s an Al Qaida plot to kill Americans...

My thought is $1,000,000 would pay for a good number of well-armed Marines!

I know darned well which one I’d rather have on hand!!!

Here's the real reason for the purchase of the art.....

"The government fiscal year was coming to a close....."

You have to know how governments on all levels work when it comes to budgets.

If they haven't spent their year's allotted budget they will indulge in an orgy of spending the last couple months so their next year's budget will not be slashed and will remain the same or more (a COL increase will generally by added to the new year's budget).

You can bet other bureaucracies across the fruited plain are spending like crazy this month to use up the rest of their 2013 budgeted dollars so they won't be cut in the new year on the grounds they didn't need all that money in 2013.

This is the same State Department that claimed they didn’t have enough money to provide adequate security at Benghazi, right?

So, after a bit more research, I've found the following facts on Wikipedia:

He's most noted for his painting, and this is (apparently) his masterpiece:

Wikipedia also had the following helpful guide to his "work":
Scully's paintings are often made up of a number of panels and are abstract. Scully paints in oils, sometimes laying the paint on quite thickly to create textured surfaces. After a brief initial period of hard-edge painting Scully abandoned the masking tape while retaining his characteristic motif of the stripe which he has developed and refined over time. His paintings typically involve architectural constructions of abutting walls and panels of painted stripes. In recent years he has augmented his trademark stripes by also deploying a mode of compositional patterning more reminiscent of a checkerboard. He has stated that this style represents the way in which Ireland has moved towards a more chequered society. He stated in 2006, "I remember growing up in Ireland and everything being chequered, even the fields and the people."

Shockingly ;-) Wikipedia made no mention of his sculptural greatness...

What an amazing talent! I think this may be the kind of "Cowboy poet" artist Pelosi had in mind with her 0care pitch...
