Vietnam looking to purchase BrahMos cruise missiles
Russia & India Report ^ | December 3, 2013 | Alexander Korablinov, RIR

Looking to increase defence cooperation with India, Vietnam Communist party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also requested New Delhi for conversion training for Vietnamese pilots to fly Sukhoi-30 aircrafts.

Vietnam formally requested India to supply the Indo-Russian BrahMos cruise missiles at a meeting in New Delhi, informed sources told RIR. The request was made when Vietnam Communist party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited the Indian capital, the sources said, adding that the Southeast Asian country was looking at enhancing security cooperation with India.

Informal negotiations had been going between the countries for the joint Indo-Russian missiles that are being manufactured in India. Vietnam’s interest was renewed as a plan between Russia and the country to jointly produce a modified anti-ship missile is moving a slow pace, the sources told RIR.

While Moscow and Hanoi to develop a joint missile analogous to Russia's Kh-35 Uran, using BrahMos as a model, Vietnam is looking at India to supply the missiles to meet its immediate requirement. It remains unclear whether India will be able to supply the missiles in the near future.

BrahMos officials declined to comment on the negotiations between India and Vietnam.

During Phu Trong’s visits, requests were also made to India for submarine training and for conversion training for Vietnamese pilots to fly Sukhoi-30 aircrafts. Sources told RIR that India would be ready to supply the missiles, as it was looking for international buyers and countries like Malaysia and Indonesia had already expressed interests. They added that New Delhi was also ready to provide training for Vietnamese pilots but were cautious about further military cooperation keeping the China factor in mind.

Beijing has been viewing India’s growing presence in Vietnam with a degree of suspicion, the sources added. India and Vietnam have traditionally maintained friendly and cordial relations and leading analysts suggest that the countries could be at the forefront of a new kind of non-aligned movement.

BrahMos cruise missiles have been adopted by India's Army and the Navy’s surface ships. The Indian Air Force has also ordered a batch of land-based missiles. Work is also underway to adapt the missile to Su-30MKI planes used by the Indian Air Force. BrahMos is an acronym of the two rivers: Brahmaputra in India and Moskva in Russia.

I wouldn't trust a Russian missile. I've been to Russia. Things aren't as good as they say they are. It's a depressing place.

My mother went to Russia in 1973...even worse back then. She also said it was depressing.

At least they’re selling them now. Used to be when we sold weapons some of our clients would be a bit iffy. Russia would give weapons to people who shouldn’t have been trusted with sharp objects.

Well, some 3000 USAF&USN pilots shot by Soviet SAMs in Vietnam alone might disagree.

Well that really doesn’t have anything to do with their missile systems. Russian missiles are acknowledged to be pretty good even by the west.

The Brahmos is an Indo-Russian venture and has been proven accurate and meets all the specs advertised multiple times.

Also there seems to be a more military aggressive posture in today's China.

One ‘flying telephone pole’ will ruin your whole day.

My gut feeling after doing threat study for some years, is that if the Russians put their mind to something, serious stuff results.

More than a few of their engineering achievements are not to be scoffed at. The general malaise of the country and shabby civilian conditions should not be taken as an indicator of what they hold most sacred: defense of the country.

Our military did not hold such a dismissive attitude as you seem to have, though that may have changed in recent years.

“Well that really doesn’t have anything to do with their missile systems. Russian missiles are acknowledged to be pretty good even by the west.”

I agree, standing on “their stuff doesn’t work” by smug Americans is wearing pretty thin. A long time ago, we were paring down our weapons systems for a SALT treaty, where the US/Russia could destroy (in front of the other side’s officials) or test launch the vehicles to be destroyed. We destroyed/demilitarized ours; the Russians launched theirs. Every one of those worked properly - and the assumption had been in gaming that 40% of them wouldn’t hit their target.

I really wonder if we have a credible shipboard defense against a really fast cruise missile, especially if those missiles are relatively cheap and plentiful (capable of a saturation attack).

That 100+MPH torpedo of theirs is pretty darned clever, and, AFAIK has no countermeasure other than stealth.

“Soviet junk” myth is one of the most blatant liberal lies. The reasons behind it are obvious.
In reality their equipment is as capable if implemented properly. Probably more capable in terms of total warfare.

What I was told about Russia and the Russians was told to me by the Russians when my husband and I visited Russia (2008).
Their dismissive attitude was a little surprising to me after hearing of their achievements. But, who was I to argue with them when they spoke to me of their own country?

Exactly.. one could equip a fool with an F22 with the best A2A missiles and he could still get killed by a skilled pilot in an F15/Su27. Like my dad used to say , “A fool with a tool is still just a fool” :p

I’m sure with traitor Kerry as Sec of State this will happen.

Probably with his brother involved in some way.

Remember when normal trade relations started with Vietnam, it had to be declared that there were no more POW’s left there, and all remains of dead military had to be shipped to the US.

So Kerry and McCain pushed for normalization, declaring that all that was taken care of.

But it wasn’t.

It had to be done so that Kerry’s brother could start doing business there, and he started the NEXT day.

Made billions.

Kerry and McCain showed gross disrespect for our Military with their lies just so they could make money.
