Nancy Lanza took her killer son Adam shooting from the age of just four, may have lied on federal paperwork to buy him guns and went on long holidays alone without the boy she branded a 'lost cause', a new book reveals today.
It lays out the strongest case yet against the mother of the Sandy Hook shooter - just days after parents of the victims said her 'bad parenting' was partly to blame.
Nancy knew as far back as 2000 that there was something very wrong with the boy and effectively abandoned her disturbed son last year while she went on trips by herself.
Meanwhile, Adam Lanza was left alone in the house they shared where he spent his days playing violent video games and filling in a 7ft by 4ft spreadsheet ranking the worst mass murders of all time by number of fatalities.
Just three days before his rampage - the second worst in U.S. history - she checked into a four-star hotel for two nights and paid $450 for a luxury spa package that included a 50-minute facial and a 50-minute body treatment.
The book, written by a journalist who spent a year living in the community investigating the outrage, also reveals that Adam, 20, may have originally intended to target Newtown High School in Connecticut instead of Sandy Hook Elementary.
The attack was only foiled when Adam saw some police cars by the school, which he only left when his mother pulled him out.
In Newtown: An American Tragedy, Matthew Lysiak goes further than the official report into the massacre which was released last month by the Danbury State Attorney Generals office.

After all, this IS the Daily Mail.
One day, the person who commits the crime will actually be blamed for the crime. Today, however, we find ways to show the world that everybody is a victim, even killers are victims
True Crime section book, fo’ sho’!
I clicked on the article, saw a woman’s photo, assumed it was Nancy Lanza and thought “Wow. She’s kinda hot! but she turned out to be the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Ed’s squeeze. (William? I can’t keep them straight.)
if anyone out there has any "different" children, you know that society gives very little support....and often the state will offer little help...
The whole story sounds like clap trap to me.
A lightweight aluminium Ruger 10/22?
Divorced and exiled.
Of course, now, they can flood the airwaves with Mandella memorial coverage for a couple of weeks. That'll help.
No way a kid of mine would live with me and only allow e-mail contact. She should have placed him an institution, but was probably in denial about the extent of his mental problems.
How could they possibly know there was only email contact for 3 months?
Did NSA have the house wired? /s
boy, people are so naive....you can not force a mentally ill person to do anything....
what did they expect her to do?....could she have forced him into her car, and driven him to a hospital?....there they might have kept him long enough for a psych eval or the "mental health professionals" to talk with him, and then they would have released him, period, just like that.....
Yeah, my folks go on trips by themselves too. Grr.
An aftermarket outfit, (I don’t remember whom), used to make a chrome molly liner/aluminum shell type barrel for the 10/22. That is the only aluminum weight saving type thing I can think of for the 10/22. Might be others I suppose. I will see if I can find it just for the heck of it.
Single parent: Nancy brought up Adam alone after she divorced from his tax accountant father, Peter Lanza, 55. Peter Lanza had not seen Adam for two years before the shooting
They make it sound like the Mother and the child were a victims.
They leave the other son out of the equation.
Why would Nancy Lanza lie on federal 4473 forms to straw purchase guns for her kid and then write the boy a check for a CZ 82 when the kid was to young to buy a gun on his own?
The whole article stinks.
The police probably examined the mom’s computer or they got info from their ISP.
While I’m pro-2nd-Amendment, I don’t know that much about guns themselves. I guess those don’t exist?
Well that would reveal emails but how does that prove they never spoke in person for 3 months?
Ruger manufactured no such thing.
Simple things like multiple instant messages or emails of this sort:
Nancy - “Please come downstairs to have breakfast”
Weirdo - “No. I am busy doing creepy stuff on the Internet”.
Nancy - “Are we ever going to talk again?”
Weirdo - “No. We can only communicate electronically. Bring me some black trash bags from downstairs so I can black out my windows.”
Something along those lines, I suppose.
Seriously, she knew her son had problems, but she did not know what to do about it. It’s hard to speculate how much she was in denial. Maybe, she was going to do something about it and he did not like her decision. Who knows?
I still think most of this is speculation.
This Daily Mail article brings up six or seven details most people already know, it proceeds to repeat the same six or seven details again and again in slightly different sequences. Stretching a column to fill two pages or more.
Unfortunately, the police were unable to recover data off his hard drive. He smashed his hard drive with a hammer before going on his killing spree. However, his mother probably had a cell phone and computer that they could have examined. I did not hear about this on the news, so that would be speculation on my part. Sometimes law enforcement can get a court order to get information from the Internet Service Provider.
As for the author’s book, I don’t think it offers that many unknown details about their life together before the shooting.
The article is written the typical Eurotrash reporting style that is full of hype and inuendo and hearsay. Should he have access to guns, definitely not. The one interesting thing in the article is the assertion that he first went to the high school but left when he saw police cars. There is a lesson there. Of course if there were also police cars at the elementary school he probably would have found another soft location to attack.
Mama’s Don’t let your babies grow up to be Cowboys
This shooter was severely mentally ill and still living at home. The "person(s)" to blame are the liberals who believe "taking meds and going back into the community" is a great idea for severely deranged individuals. But the article makes clear just how utterly in denial, negligent and culpable both parents were while this killer was in development.
And his father took off with wifey number two and hadn't seen his horribly disturbed son for two years. Why isn't he in the headline? Both parents totally sucked. I have to say, it's a kind of karmic justice that one of them is alive to pay the price of guilt and shame. Funny, I don't feel sorry for that sperm donor "father."
Baloney. The father lives very well in a nearby town in a valuable piece of real estate. He had the money to afford a second wife, but not enough to sue for custody and visitation, which the courts routinely dispense to any man who sues for it (O.J. Simpson even got custody after killing his kids' mother) to make sure his loony-toon son would get the care he needed. Thanks so much, cool dad and younger second wife.
You can’t get a mentally ill person into an institution even if they are bat-s*** crazy.
1985 - I had a crazy husband (now long ex) who was pulling up grass from the neighbor’s yard and stuffing it into his mouth while and running around threatening to kill our dog and eat him.
Three calls before the cops even showed up. Their response to me was “We just can’t take people off the street and put them away!”
The receiver is aluminum.
Was that even possible? I don’t know if he would have been a candidate for being locked, prior to shooting the kids.
It would have been difficult, especially since he was an adult. She would have had to request a hearing in court and get a judge-ordered psychiatric exam for her son. I think once any doctors tried to exam her son, they would have determined that he was highly crazy. Anyhow, a lot of people have speculated that this is the possible reason he son went over the edge. Nobody knows for sure. He seems to have been thinking about killing people for a long time, regardless.
