The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will sponsor the December 4 Alternatives 2013 conference in Austin, TX. A few organizations encourage people with mental illnesses to stop medication and use natural remedies, which are not proven to work.
On May 22, the Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing about SAMHSAs wasteful spending.
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked SAMHSA administrator Pam Hyde about the conference from October 2012. One session was called Unleash the Beast: Primal Movement Workshop. Blackburn asked Hyde if there is evidence animal-inspired movements, behaviors, and expressions do help those with mental illnesses. Hyde said yoga and mediation help but could not provide a straight answer about animal behavior to Blackburnor the exact amount of money the department paid. Blackburn then questioned Hyde why the department paid award-winning painter Sam English $22,500 to create a painting for prevention and recovery.
MS. HYDE. We have a responsibility, Congresswoman, to get the word out about behavioral health to all kinds of populations. In this case, the tribal populations are very clear that the way to do that is to use people from their tribes and nations.
Joe Bruce of Caratunk, ME testified in front of the committee and asked them to stop funding organizations that tell people with schizophrenia to stop their medications. Mindfreedom is one of those groups and will be present at the conference again. Joe and his wife Amy tried to get the best treatment for their son William, who has schizophrenia, but SAMHSA-funded lawyers were able to release William. Two months later, he murdered Amy with a hatchet.

This is disturbing. At a time when high publicity events highlight the fact that we need to do more to treat mental illness, our government is sponsoring kooks who spread the message that mental illness is imaginary?
Especially when (IMO) getting saved and allowing the Holy Spirit to minister to your heart, you can fix a ton of stuff yourself just because .. “Ohhh .. NOW I see .. “, occurs.
Our schools are now mental health and social service facilities. The so called exerts are medicating thier patients and putting them in a normal class environment with your children. nice!
Our largest mental health institutions are now our prisons.
All in the name of freedom and the right to privacy.
The pushing of mind altering drugs is growing by leaps and bounds. I belong to 2 health discussion boards. And all you see is that people are being loaded down with crap like Cymbalta, Xanax, etc. Then they wonder why they are moody, have brain fog, or memory issues, or are so fatigued they want to just veg out and watch TV. Or complain about the horrid weight gain from the drugs, because they are causing people to over eat. Yet they say they can’t live with out them.
Ever hear of St. John’s Wort, no side effects that I know of, good to calm the brain or chamolie tea for nerves.
That is a change of thought pattern, or cognitive therapy, to the Highest Degree! :) Unfortunately cognitive therapy can be used to get someone to think like a liberal, too, if it is what makes them happy. They do not believe in a universal Truth, just a personal truth.
I was thinking about religion, aside from God calling someone to salvation, and how someone goes on a search until they find what they like to believe as opposed to finding the Truth. The Truth is that double edged sword. Cuts off the warts.
I was talking to a Marine who had suffered a TBI and is losing his memory from the drugs. I suggested he counteract them by using natural means, exercise, eating right, doing whatever natural advantages are recommended for Alzheimer’s. I did not tell him to stop taking them, just be careful when he was able to get off them. As I sit here thinking about why I can’t get motivated after eating crap carbs all day yesterday.
SAMHSA is always going on and on about “evidence-based” practices and treatment, and now this, which is anything but. These people are playing Russian roulette with other people’s lives. Is this just another way the BO administration is funneling money to its supporters, regardless of how crackpot they are?
