Elian Gonzalez, the focus of a bitter international custody dispute after he was rescued at sea as a child, left Cuba on Friday for the first time since 2000, when the U.S. government returned him to the island.
Gonzalez, who also turned 20 on Friday, traveled to Quito, Ecuador, as part of a 200-member Cuban delegation to a weeklong youth conference there.
"Fidel Castro for me is like a father," Gonzalez said in the recent interview. "I don't profess to have any religion but if I did my God would be Fidel Castro. He is like a ship that knew to take his crew on the right path."
Now a military cadet studying industrial engineering, Gonzalez said he would have suffered had he stayed in the United States.

My heart still breaks when I think of how he was kidnapped by US government thugs and returned to prison Cuba, when his Mother died to rescue him from that life.
Dear AM -- this may not technically be Frontpage news, but considering the huge story it was at the time, I think many people will be interested and that may make it of sufficient interest to put it in that category.
“I personally think he didn’t forget — he just knows that if he doesn’t tow the Castro line, he’s be in prison or dead. “
I think the same thing. And that 200 member cuban delegation, I’ll bet alot or most or all of them are tasked to make sure Elian doesnt make a run for it.
The USA is headed towards communism. If he was allowed to stay he would have the same brainwashing.
Probably not the most heinous or shameful act of the Clinton and his henchpersons — but certainly in the top ten.
His mother died in vain.
“”Fidel Castro for me is like a father,””
What happened to his real father, the one NAZI Reno used storm troopers facilitate his return?
Poor kid. So close to having a chance at a real life. The chance his mother died for.
Indeed, may God have mercy on all of the United States, because soon, we may all be worse off than Cuba is now.
May God judge the men in that picture ever so severely. Elian Gonzales’ eternal soul is on them.
They sure tried to make him look matinee-idol pretty, but you can’t hide those angry dead eyes. Something tells me his life in Cuba hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses, and he’s compelled to speak as if it has been.
Due Obedience is not a defense
Yes, the eyes... it’s true that the eyes are the windows of the soul — he didn’t forget.
Don’t forget those who gave the orders... Clinton and Reno.
This must break his US family’s heart. What a shame.
He's probably already got his uLEO pension and working a second job, like teaching children, so he can get another public service pension.
Or maybe he does what other retired cops do. Join organizations like the TEA Party and surveil the group, you godsend of liberty.
“I don’t profess to have any religion but if I did my God would be Fidel Castro.”
Wow. Oddly enough, I’m sure you could find some people here who would say the same thing about Barack Obama.
At least here, he would have gotten to enjoy freedom while it lasts for us.
I had the same reaction to that photo. Just another angry hispanic. I imagine that his entire life has been spent being used as a political pawn. I doubt that was what his mother, who gave her life, would have wanted for him.
I think I’ll print a few copies of that picture for my next range day.
Well, Elian, your god is about to die. Wimpy god.
That poor child. Janet Reno and those Jack Booted THUGS along with Clinton have a LOT to answer for.
I just going to admit I know very little about types of guns, but would like to know more. What the heck kind of gun is that guard holding? It would certainly hold my attention. Looks like it loads from a cartridge stuck in the bottom. Once he starts shooting, could he stop quickly, or must that cartridge empty itself first? It would fire bullets, not pellets right? Is that a gun best suited for long distance shooting? If we had more affordable classes in community college around here, I would like to take such a class. The only training course I know of around here costs over $200.(Bullseye). Didn’t police used to offer the public free gun safety classes?
Poor kid, his brain is now swiss cheese
I always thought that someday he would come back to the states and take REVENGE!!
Just found this article in the Havana Times. It’s of course what we would expect from a Cuban propaganda newspaper. And as I said before — if Elian wouldn’t tow the party line, he would be in prison or dead, and I think he knows it only too well.
Elian Gonzalez: Fidel Castro Has Done Nothing Other Than Ease the Worlds Suffering
Sad soul......he needs more prayers.
Wonder what Janet Reno is up to now, since her try at getting elected didn’t work out, I haven’t seen her make a public appearance in years. Saturday Night Live used to say after the White House, Janet spent most her time alone in her home office, drinking dark Bourbon and staring at the aquarium.
Cuban Delegation to Youth Festival Warmly Received in Ecuador
I think she has Parkinson’s.
They all used to talk like that in Russia too. It doesn’t mean anything.
This is all I could find out about Janet Reno’s current life:
“On April 17, 2009, Reno was awarded the Justice Award by the American Judicature Society. Eric Holder, Attorney General under the Obama Administration, presented Reno the award. Seth Andersen, Executive Vice President of AJS said the award recognizes “her commitment to improving our systems of justice and educating Americans about our great common enterprise to ensure equality under the law.” The award is the highest given by the AJS, and recognizes significant contributions toward improvements in the administration of justice within the United States.
In 2013, Reno voiced herself for the “Dark Knight Court” episode of The Simpsons.”
Thanks for the update. I don’t wish her ill, at least I no longer do. Sometimes one has to just let the past go. I couldn’t effect things anyway. She served as an example of what an Attorney General should not be doing. Holder now serves most proficiently in the same ominous capacity.
Thanks for the picture from happier times...
” I dont wish her ill, at least I no longer do. “
Actually I do wish that all involved in the “legal” kidnapping of Elian — from Clinton on down to get justice for their crimes, because what they did to Elian WAS a crime.
I’d give odds that he takes his own life one day.
Either that or makes the break and drags his poor soul back to the U.S.
It’s like someone who commits murder and avoids punishment, or foully betrays a friend or family member...it’s hard to live under that kind of great lie.
I think Elian is truly special — he managed to survive through all the ordeals, but he didn’t forget — it takes a very strong person to do that.
It would be hard to top Waco and Ruby Ridge. Maybe the intentional bombing of Serbian civilians.
They certainly know what it's about.
Castro’s getting up in age.
I wonder whether there will be any elections post-Castro, and I also wonder whether Elian might figure in those.
Heck. Just wondering is all.
Communism at it's finest - the state is God. It's what liberals want.
Check out the comments after the link and see the liberals there bashing America and democratic governments and praising socialism. One guy in particular is praising the free healthcare Cuba provides. That's CNN's readership I suppose.

I would encourage them to move there, if they like it so much...
I could have sworn she had Parkinson’s.
Janet Reno does have Parkinson’s — it was definitely in the news way back.
