Skip to comments.Newt Gingrich: What Would You Have Done? Nelson Mandela and American Conservatives
Posted on 12/07/2013 2:16:29 PM PST by EveningStar
Yesterday I issued a heartfelt and personal statement about the passing of President Nelson Mandela. I said that his family and his country would be in my prayers and Callistas prayers.
I was surprised by the hostility and vehemence of some of the people who reacted to me saying a kind word about a unique historic figure.
So let me say to those conservatives who dont want to honor Nelson Mandela, what would you have done?
Mandela was faced with a vicious apartheid regime that eliminated all rights for blacks and gave them no hope for the future. This was a regime which used secret police, prisons and military force to crush all efforts at seeking freedom by blacks.
What would you have done faced with that crushing government?
What would you do here in America if you had that kind of oppression?

Okay, Newt, let Americans try the way Mandela did to get out from under the yoke of Obama. What would happen? And is SA really better off now? What about the white farmers? Newt, you just jumped on the Mandela bandwagon. Anyway, I have no respect for you so I don’t really care what you say about anything.
Call him out for the communist terrorist that he was...
How about you and Callista just stick a damn sock in it, Newt?
Mandela was evil. The South Africa he “liberated” turned from productive to hell hole. He’s dead now. Let GOD sort it out.
Just ignore the evil, communist, racist bastard and let the worms have him.
May that old Commie rot in hell.
What would you do here in America if you had that kind of oppression?
We are getting that now and you in government are the cause and the problems. time will tell.
So we should praise an abortionist and a homosexualist, Newt? Gotcha.
“Mandela was faced with a vicious apartheid regime that eliminated all rights for blacks and gave them no hope for the future. This was a regime which used secret police, prisons and military force to crush all efforts at seeking freedom by blacks. “
Bullcrap. I thought Newt was a scholar.
Who is Newt Gingrich, and why should I care what he thinks?
While I have sympathies for the Boers I myself would not tie American politics to what is happening there. A large plurality of blacks wanted liberation, and they got it, not my fault. Good luck to em all.
What was inaccurate about it?
Lenin, Hitler, Mao, Kim Jung, Castro all “liberated” their countries as well.
Would he make a favorable reference to them as well? Nope.
What’s the difference between these commies and Mandela?
It should only take one guess. Hint: Colin Powell would probably endorse Mandela.
I’m very disappointed in Newt.
Romney quoted Pat Buchanan to attack Newt on this and other issues.
It is the low expectations. Most honest people who are eulogizing Mandela are saying he is not as bad as other black leaders would have been.
If Barry isn't stopped we may just find out.
Hey Newt we are faced with a vicious 0bamatheid regime right here!
Now try it with a flaming tire around your neck.
Were you there? Did you live there?
Mandela in his own words admits to such violence.
When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.
I’m surprised no one has drug old Menachem Begin out of his grave.. Oppression is not exclusive to any race or peoples on this planet.
Violence happens .. But when innocent women and children are targeted.. Regardless of cause,, you lose in my book,, so for all those apologists who keep trying to re-glaze the cake, sorry, no sale.
We all face struggles, Newt.. Go study more of the history of the land.,, tribal violence happened long before European man showed up.
It’s a part of life we ought not enjoy but we have to endure , especially at times like this where the praise gets the airtime. The truth is irrelevant..
Why Nelson Mandela Loved Fidel Castro
Americans generally view Nelson Mandela as a hero and Fidel Castro as a villain. Mandela saw things differently.
The South African leaders nationalist and anti-imperialist stances collided head on with the worlds superpower and gave him a lot in common with its Cuban archenemy. Mandela embraced the former Cuban dictator because he opposed apartheid and represented the aspirations of Third World nationalists that the United States undermined across the globe during the Cold War.
As it did for many leftists in the Global South, the Cuban Revolutions triumph in 1959 inspired Mandela. Charged with the task of starting a guerrilla army in 1961, he looked to the writings of Cuban Communists for guidance.
Any and every source was of interest to me, Mandela wrote in his 2008 autobiography. I read the report of Blas Roca, the general secretary of the Community Party of Cuba, about their years as an illegal organization during the Batista regime. In Commando, by Deneys Reitz, I read of the unconventional guerrilla tactics of the Boer generals during the Anglo-Boer War. I read works by and about Che Guevara, Mao Tse-tung, Fidel Castro.
Mandelas admiration for the Cuban Revolution only grew with time. Cuba under Castro opposed apartheid and supported the African National Congress — Mandela’s political organization and the current ruling party. Mandela credited Cubas military support to Angola in the 1970s and 1980s with helping to debilitate South Africas government enough to result in the legalization of the ANC in 1990.
The U.S. government, on the other hand, reportedly played a role in Mandelas 1962 arrest and subsequently branded him a terrorist — a designation they only rescinded in 2008. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan vetoed the Anti-Apartheid Act.
Given this history, it shouldnt be surprising that Mandela remained sharply critical of the United States into his later life. When the George W. Bush administration announced plans to invade Iraq in 2003, Mandela said: If theres a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America. They dont care.
This is not a leader.
I am sorry. I would never use a necklace on anyone no matter what they did. I would just shoot them rather than torture them. Apartheid was not right. No one is saying otherwise. But it would have fallen just like the Berlin wall over time. As it is now blacks are not better off. So the transition was mismanaged by communist leaning Mandela who doesnt understand economics. He may have been charasmatic but he wasnt very smart on economics or he would not have asked China and Vietnam for advice.
Well, I'd become a Communist and marry a serial murderer, just like he did, Newt.
That's the same foolishness that makes a false equivalency between Evangelical Christians and muzzies. The left, course, does that all the time. And now Newt is in that camp as well.
Chopping off heads and necklacing hundreds of blacks and blowing up innocent people is NOT what I would have done Newtie
What would I have done? Well, obviously join the Communist Party and murder innocent people with bombs!
While we're at it, I don't see what's so terrible about Apartheid. We have a culture that doesn't want to be overrun and puts up barriers to the subcontinent immigrants. What did Mandela need to "liberate" himself from? Don't like it? Leave!
P.S. Before the dummies respond to this post, please consider the fact that I'M BLACK.
No, and I suspect neither were you. But what happened was pretty well documented, so where was Newt wrong?
Hey Newt, you asked a question.
What email address should I send the response to??
Mandela was fighting for Marxist ideology her did not fight for freedom. His terror group probably killed more blacks than whites. They killed innocent people instead of government soldiers.
Why do you put yourself in the position of defending the Apartheid regime, which was more oppressive than Southern segregation ever was? Never as bad as the Belgium Congo at its worse, or German East Africa, but an unjust regime nonetheless. Thanks to Mandela, South Africa has not become one of the hell-holes found to the North. Not yet, anyway.
I really know very little about this situation. Apartheid was probably more vicious than segregation in America. If you really believe in those words in the Declaration of Independence and in the kind of Enlightenment Thinking which helped produce America, its hard to disagree with Gingrich.
I feel he is right.
Well, Newtie has revealed his color as well. He's pink.
By the way, I appreciate this wisdom in your post.
Ironfocus does indeed say he is from South Africa.
Mandela was a Marxist terrorist who slaughtered innocent people black and white alike. (see necklacing) Not in the name of freedom, but in the name of Marxism. Even while in prison he signed off on bombings, like the Church Street Bombing that killed 19 and wounded 200. He admitted this in his book.
He hand wrote an essay called “How to be a Good Communist” which was posted on FR in a 2004 thread:
Botha offered to let him out of prison if he renounced violence. He refused.
His Truth & Reconciliation Commission covered up and ignored the terror crimes of the ANC. Mandela was never called to testify about his activities.
There was nothing good or correct about anything Mandela has ever done. Even as President he spent more effort building the military and corporate favoritism than helping the poor. Like a good commie I guess.
So you are arguing for apartheid? His ruling and the ANC post-Apartheid is bad. But you simply are being foolish or worse if you are going to downplay what he accomplished before the ANC ruined that country.
Everything? So blacks in South Africa enjoyed full rights and the same freedoms whites did? There was no secret police and nobody got jailed for opposing the government? Wow. Who knew?
Mandela was fighting for Marxist ideology her did not fight for freedom.
Well he didn't have any to begin with.
His terror group probably killed more blacks than whites. They killed innocent people instead of government soldiers.
I have no way of knowing if that is right or wrong, but if history tells us anything it's that rebellions and guerilla wars tend to be more vicious than conventional wars. But if I'm faced with a life where I have no rights or freedoms, where my every move is controlled by a police state, and where there is little chance of it changing then I'm not sure I wouldn't fight against by oppressor using any means necessary.
We know what you would have done, Newt. You definitely go for where you get the most love. If you cosy cuddled up to Nasty Pelosi over GLOBAL WARMING, you’d have cuddled up to Russia and Castro for sure. And you’d be on your 4th Winnie by now, with a few secretaries on the table for dictation...
Weren’t most civilians killed while he was in prison ? Violence would have happened from more radical groups anyway that would have made the ANC completely irrelevant.
In his book he admitted he signed off on those bombings/attacks. He was still leading the terror group from prison.
Politically Motivated Murders in South Africa from 1994 to 2012:
Whites Murdered by Blacks
Since 1994, more than 60000 (if not 60000, I apologize profusely and you can replace the number with ‘a shitload’ - these numbers come from various other sites - and they have increased since I wrote this article - Google ‘muldersdrift’) white South Africans have been murdered of which more than 4000 were commercial farmers. Exact figures are very hard to come by as the South African police fail to report most of the murders that take place. There is also no distinction between white and black victims in crime records.
The estimated number of whites sounds like a lot. But it’s pretty much common knowledge around the world that there are 50+ murders PER DAY in SA. From 1994 to 2013, that’s around 350 000 murders. So, why is it so hard to believe that 60 000 of those are black on white? It’s about 17% of the total murders. But the numbers are not the main issue here. It’s the NATURE of the crimes.
As the white population of South Africa was 4 434 697 according to the official state census in 1996, and more than 400 000 white South Africans have left the country, it could be estimated that nearly 2% of white South Africans have been murdered in the 18 years of democracy.
Compare that to the 7518 black people that were murdered by the Apartheid government, which comes to a percentage of 0.02% of the black population. (And no, you can’t compare people killed by the security forces with people killed by civilians, but I’m sure that if you look up white on black civilian murders during Apartheid, it would still be very low indeed. I’m not in the business of statistics - I’m trying to highlight the fact that it is a lie that the Apartheid government killed millions of blacks)
So, if anybody ever asks you how many black people were killed by white people in South Africa, you can tell them that black people have murdered roughly 100 times more white people in the last 63 years.
White Farmers Murdered by Blacks
There were roughly 128 000 commercial farmers in South Africa in 1980. Today there are 40 000 commercial farmers left in South Africa.
Since 1994, more than 4000 farmers have been murdered and many more maimed, tortured, raped and assaulted.
“And Newt said...Mandela was faced with a vicious apartheid regime that eliminated all rights for blacks and gave them no hope for the future. This was a regime which used secret police, prisons and military force to crush all efforts at seeking freedom by blacks.”
Looks like there’s plenty of freedom NOW for the ANC thugs to murder, rape, torture, maim and exterminate whites in-mass since they were emancipated from their white masters oppressive masters!
Sorry Newt... I’m still gonna have to go with Mandela and his thugs were, and still are... Marxist-tyrants, mass-murderers, terrorists, and genocidal maniacs.
Hows that Zulu Government work’n out for ya South Afrika!
I can barely believe I once called myself a Newt Gingrich conservative.
We tried to tell you guys. Newt is low character and always will be. We all loved Newt going after the partisan moderators. That was awesome. But he is in no way a leader.
I wouldn’t have responded to the hostility, Gingrich.
If you believed in your heart that you did the right thing, there is no need to come out swinging.
I would also say that the people who attacked you felt they were doing the right thing, too. Let it go.
The need to scratch your tit-for-tat itch bit ya in the tokus during the primaries. Bums me out, too.
Then you would be living in a Leftist Utopia
Well neither side were angels.
Mandela and the ANC were in fact Marxist thugs.
The White government were bat $hit insane racists.
