SC Sheriff Refuses To Lower Flag For Nelson Mandela
The Greenville News ^ | December 7, 2013 | Eric Connor

Posted on 12/07/2013 2:56:25 PM PST by DJ Taylor

The American flag that flies over the Pickens County Sheriff's Office will be raised high tonight despite an order by President Barack Obama that flags across the country be lowered to half-staff to honor the death of iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Sheriff Rick Clark told The Greenville News that he has ordered the flag be raised at the end of today because he said the honor of lowering flags to half-staff should be reserved for Americans.

"The flag at half-staff is for Americans' ultimate sacrifice for our country," Clark said. "We should never stray away from that."

The flag has flown at half-staff and will continue to during daylight hours today in honor of a Low country law enforcement officer who was killed and in honor of Pearl Harbor Day, Clark said.

However, come tonight, the flag will be raised, he said.

On Thursday, Obama ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds until sunset Monday.

Our country is according one of its highest honors to Nelson Mandela, a man who was nothing more than a Communist terrorist with the blood of countless innocents on his hands, and the only reason he didn’t succeed in turning South Africa into a “Killing Field” that would have rivaled Pol Pot’s, Mao Tse Tung’s and Stalin’s Killing Fields was that he was captured and imprisoned before he could complete his Communist Revolution.

I must say, it never occurred to me to half-staff my flag.

It would have made more sense to lower for Margaret Thatcher — and even then I’m not sure it would be appropriate.

I admit that I can't remember a time where it was lowered for a foreign head of state.

President George W. Bush ordered flags to fly at half-staff at the passing of Pope John Paul II in 2005, President Bill Clinton did so for Yitzhak Rabin (1995) and King Hussein of Jordan (1999), and President Ronald Reagan honored Anwar Sadat in 1981, but the historical precedent most often cited is President Lyndon Johnson’s bestowal of the honor in recognition of the passing of Winston Churchill in 1965.

I was proud to see that the flag in my borough was flying proud at full mast this morning. Our mayor is a self proclaimed progressive democrat so I doubt it will stay that way. We did good for one day at least.

Wait, there are rules? We can't just do whatever we feel like doing?

In lieu of lowering the American flag to mourn a South African citizen, maybe the Sheriff should have tweeted a picture of himself watching a news report about Mandela like the President did.

Yes, in a Communist block country, which ours now is, disobedience of your Communist Dictator could result in severe consequences.

Then agree or disagree with the decision, I guess Obama isn't setting a precedent. But Churchill at least had honorary U.S. citizenship while the others did not.

Good point, I didn’t associate the two.
They don’t have their flag edict correct anyways because they fly the PA flag (Pennsylvania not the palestinian one) at the same height.

I remember when Sir Winston Churchill died, the flags on base were lowered to half staff. I believe he was an honorary American citizen though. I can’t think of any other foriegn citizen who deserved it more than him.

Interesting. I took my life in my hands, went out in the snow and drove into town and saw the local Post office had it’s flag at full staff.

Not sure if Churchill was an honorary American citizen or an actual one. His mother was an American.

Relatedly, on a visit to our Congress, he broke them up by pointing out that if he were American, he'd have been one of them.

Thanks!

“In April 1986, Winnie Mandela publicly endorsed “neck lacing,” telling a Soweto mob, “With our necklaces we will liberate this country.” Mrs. Mandela was also implicated in January 1989 in the abduction of three young black men and a boy from a Methodist Church shelter. Mrs. Mandela’s bodyguards, known as the “Mandela United Football Club,” snatched them and took them to Mrs. Mandela’s home where they were beaten, whipped and subjected to other forms of torture. The object was to get them to say that the Methodist minister, who is white, had abused them sexually. Two of them did so but later recanted. A third escaped. The boy, 14-year-old Mokhetsi “Stempie” Seipei, did not give in and was beaten into unconsciousness. On January 7, 1989, his battered body was found in a field with his throat slit. Stempie was famous as an anti-apartheid activist, having been arrested for his activities when he was only 10.”

But under the laws in place at the time that did not grant U.S. citizenship to her son. He was given honorary citizenship in 1963.
