“In April 1986, Winnie Mandela publicly endorsed “neck lacing,” telling a Soweto mob, “With our necklaces we will liberate this country.” Mrs. Mandela was also implicated in January 1989 in the abduction of three young black men and a boy from a Methodist Church shelter. Mrs. Mandela’s bodyguards, known as the “Mandela United Football Club,” snatched them and took them to Mrs. Mandela’s home where they were beaten, whipped and subjected to other forms of torture. The object was to get them to say that the Methodist minister, who is white, had abused them sexually. Two of them did so but later recanted. A third escaped. The boy, 14-year-old Mokhetsi “Stempie” Seipei, did not give in and was beaten into unconsciousness. On January 7, 1989, his battered body was found in a field with his throat slit. Stempie was famous as an anti-apartheid activist, having been arrested for his activities when he was only 10.”

Flags are lowered for heros killed for their country. Politicians use it for their personal agenda.
Let’s go back to its original purpose.

It should have been at half staff for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
We flew our flag at home - at full staff - for Pearl Harbor Day! Father-in-law, God rest his soul, was a World War Two vet.

And as far as I can remember, (and the shame of it is that I can because I was around back then) you hit the nail on the head.
OTH, I opposed ALL of those incidents, because I believed then as I believe now, that the American Flag, is for Americans only.
I’ll get the usual boo hoos about that stance, but what the heck.
I’m just a podunk who thinks our flag means things. (Not saying you don’t, I don’t know where you stand on the issue, and that’s your choice. Just expressing MY opinion, biased as it is.)

I think he made a good point that the USSA has become what us old cold warriors tried to defeat.

We lower the flag altogether too much. When I drive through several towns, I am bound to find one where flags are lowered — and I have to ask for whom. Sometimes it is just for some local resident. Come on! That is not enough.
When I die, I hope that the flags will not be lowered anywhere.

And I agree. That man fired up a whole bunch of people.
Mostly in the Commonwealth countries, the U.S., Canada, Australia and on and on.
He did speak for all of us.
He was about the only one who deserved such an honor from us.
OTH, I somehow don’t consider him a foreigner. Kinda like Ben Franklin, a son of two countries.

If you and DJ Taylor think that America is equivalent to Poland in the 1980s, then you have no idea what Russian communism was like under that prick Brezhnev.
Do us patriots a favor and choose your words more carefully.
I think that the state of our mainstream media can be in some careful way compared to the state of the media during late Communism.
