Havana is like Pompeii and Castro is its Vesuvius. Anthony Daniels
Almost every picture Ive ever seen of Cubas capital shows the city in ruins. Una Noche, the 2012 gut punch of a film directed by Lucy Mulloy, captures in nearly every shot the savage decay of what was once the Western Hemispheres most beautiful city.
So I was stunned when I saw the restored portion of Old Havana for the first time.
It is magnificent. And it covers a rather large area. A person could wander around there all day, and I did. At first glance you could easily mistake it for Europe and could kid yourself into thinking Cuba is doing just fine.

Sounds so much like Detroit.
From the link:
In most countries, I said, no one has to live in a slum. Its difficult to get out, but its possible to get out. Here people get twenty dollars a month and a ration card and thats it. Theyre forced by law to be poor. Exile is the only way out.
The misery is self-inflicted in Detroit.
I guess that makes it worse...the stupidity of liberalism has no bounds.
I’m about a hundred miles from havana.
Most of those who could have helped cuba got out. Communism never works. No better example than Kuba.
If I were a father living in Cuba trying to feed my family and had the CDR make my life a living hell every time I happened upon a black market piece of meat, or milk for my children, you can bet your ass that the first guy Im coming for once the government goes down is that CDR SOB thats been snitching on me for years.
I remember that film of San Fran before the big quake and there was an old film of London before the Muzzies, both were quite remarkable.
Nelson Mandela thought it was wonderful
The *All You Need is Love* painting looks like the old Obamacare girl.
Unless we radically change the course we are on, this is what America will soon resemble, not just Havana and Detroit.
We have the leadership that can make it happen.
Michael Moore thinks it’s great, too.
I would love to visit Havana if I knew it was safe. Not sure. Same for North Korea. Fascinating(and sad) how those societies function.
Perhaps the funeral will provide us with heartwarming photos showing Barack embracing Raúl.
Dare we hope for Fidel himself?
Gotta get rid of the commies first,2014 and 201 are huge. You can be sure they already have their strategies we need ours.
North Korea does not function
If Cuba had free enterprise, and if Americans could travel there without restrictions, the economy would go supernova.
I'd like to see that.
It's probably safe, but very depressing.
I know several people who have gone. None of them experienced any problems. All of them are leftists who approved of the Cuban government. One of them, probably the farthest left of the bunch, was quite happy with the prostitutes. It takes a special sort of person to approve of a form of government that forces women into prostitution.
*mega bump*
That was a great read. What a tragedy Cuba is.
Not while either Castro is still in charge.
