Locked up for EIGHT hours for telling Nelson Mandela joke
Daily Star ^ | December 9, 2013 | Paul Robins

Neil Phillips said he was fingerprinted, DNA- swabbed and had his computers seized. The 44-year-old was held after posting: “My PC takes so long to shut down I’ve decided to call it Nelson Mandela.” Another read: “Free Mandela – switch the power off.” But police swooped after a councillor complained over the gags about the former South African leader, who passed away on Thursday, aged 95. Mr Phillips who insisted he meant no harm, said: “It was an awful experience. I was fingerprinted, they took DNA and my computer. “It was a couple of jokes, Bernard Manning type,” he added. "There was no hatred. What happened to freedom of speech? I think they over-reacted massively.” Mr Phillips, who runs Crumbs sandwich shop in Rugeley, Staffs, was arrested after complaints by Cllr Tim Jones about the one-liners, aired when the anti-apartheid hero was critically ill. GRIEF: Winnie Mandela is mourning the late great man [GETTY] A spokesman for Staffordshire Police confirmed the arrest and added: “When he answered bail on September 30, he was informed that there would be no further action based on CPS decision of there being insufficient evidence to support a prosecution.” Yesterday, millions flocked to churches, parks and hills to pay their respects to Mr Mandela, including ex-wife Winnie. She was joined at Bryanston Methodist Church in Johannesburg, by South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma. He said: “Nelson Mandela stood for freedom. He fought against those who opp-ressed others. He wanted everyone to be free.” Mr Zuma gave his address as a picture emerged of Mandela smiling while holding hands with three-year-old great-grandson Lewanika. The image, from May, was the last snap taken before Mandela’s death.

Not everyone who opposes an evil, is a saint...some of them are monsters.

Joseph Stalin opposed Hitler. Stalin was a monster.

Mandela opposed apartheid. Mandela was a ?

Evil and goodness can exist in the same person at the same time. I will admit that such a thing is very unsettling.

So, did this happen on the Moon or in Madagasgar, or where. I hate stories that have no byline on where the incident took place, which police prosecuted, city or federal or what?

More worthless reporting, or if it is just a local story, the person posting has a responsibility to include WHERE in the byline of the story.

Is the the USA or France or where?

Was this in South Africa. Is that why the police were so aggressive?

Almost certainly Great Britain based on the terms used in the story.

Mandela was the head of the ANC, which murdered people and violently intimidated people into silence in quest of its political goals. The ANC invented necklacing.

Mandela may not be the Communist monster that Stalin, Hitler, and Mao were, but he was still that much responsible for the atrocities in his country.

Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Nelson meet George.

I trust George.
