Fire And Ice - Volcanoes, Not CO2, Melt West Antarctic
Investor's Business Daily ^ | December 10, 2013 | IBD EDITORIALS

Junk Science: Researchers have discovered a chain of smoldering active volcanoes under the West Antarctic ice sheet — which happens to be the ice sheet that climate hysterics say is proof of man-caused global warming.

The 2004 science fiction movie "The Day After Tomorrow" — and the operative word here is "fiction" — opened with a portion of the West Antarctic ice sheet shearing off as a prelude to planetary doom.

But if the researchers depicted in the film had looked deep into the widening crevice, they might have noticed a string of active volcanoes lurking under nearly a mile of Antarctic ice.

Real-life researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have in fact discovered a chain of active volcanoes under the West Antarctic ice sheet. They weren't looking for them. They just detected unexplained seismic activity while doing measurements.

As part of an effort to analyze the ice sheet to help reconstruct Antarctica's climate history, the researchers set up two crossing lines of seismographs across Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica. The instruments recorded at least two significant seismic events under the ice sheet.

"I started seeing events that kept occurring at the same location, which was odd. Then I realized they were close to some mountains, but not right on top of them," explained doctoral student Amanda Lough, lead author of a paper appearing in the November issues of the journal Nature Geoscience.

"My first thought was, 'OK, maybe it's just coincidence,'" Lough said.

"But then I looked more closely and realized that the mountains were actually volcanoes and there was an age progression to the range. The volcanoes closest to the seismic events were the youngest ones."

Gore is indeed skating on thick ice - the ice sheet is hitting the fan.

They know so much about planet earth they can predict the climate within a few degrees 100 years into the future ... but were surprised to find a chain of active volcanoes.

Al Gore says, “Volcanoes produce CO2 due to the fossil fuels that volcanoes consume. Therefore man made fossil fuels are causing global warming. Neptune weeps.”

That's putting it in perspective rather well, TigersEye.

I follow this topic far closer than most. It’s not just the science and junk science that is fascinating - it is the religious dogma that global warming has become for seemingly intelligent people.

There have been numerous articles recently that appear to point to the obvious culprit for temperature variance (the sun) and the devout seem to admit the role of the sun, yet they don’t change their minds. This news is fascinating because this shelf on the Antarctic is the one most often pointed to as evidence of warming due to ice activity, yet here we learn there are active volcanoes (a major source of heat and gas) underneath this portion of the ice sheet when someone actually looked.

This seems to be a pretty logical reason ice behavior would be different in that particular spot, yet it won’t change their narrative. They are the modern version of the flat-earth society.

I know people who warm the planet simply by being on it. Most of them are right here on Free Republic. And that’s a good thing.
And now back to your regular programming.

hell, docs were surprised there’s a fourth ligament in the inner knee they never knew was there until this year. they only recently figured out the appendix wasn’t useless.

wizards of smart, not. if anything the more i learned the more i realized how much yet there is to learn.

That's true. For anyone who is really interested in learning about the world around them sooner or later they have to come to that conclusion.

It it quite obvious that global warming, or whatever they are calling it this week has passed from the realm of science into that of religious belief. And every religion has its zealots. Don't confuse them with facts, their mind is made up!

I recall reading an article about the underwater volcanic activity in that area a number of years ago. I can’t remember if I was at that other site, or here at FR to determine how many years ago it was, but quite awhile ago.

IMO it shows how effective the Leftist media is at keeping such news under wraps so they can promote their agenda.

Thanks for your interest, but the article(s) I read were more than two years ago, and were specific about the deep sea volcanic activity in the Antarctic region.

The more I think about it the more I believe I was at Lucianne.com at the time which would place the articles about 2000-2001, but then LucyT introduced us to FR, and we began lurking here at FR in 2001, so it could have been something that is archived here. I’ll try to find it when I have the time.
