Democrat Katherine Clark easily defeated three opponents Tuesday to win a vacant congressional seat and become the fifth woman to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. House.
Turnout was light across the district with the candidates competing for the attention of voters, many of whom were in the midst of holiday preparations.
Republican Frank Addivinola, a Boston attorney, was Clark's closest opponent. The other two candidates were James Aulenti and James Hall.
The 5th District is heavily Democratic and overwhelmingly backed Barack Obama over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in last year's presidential contest. The district stretches from the coast to communities north and west of Boston including Waltham, Framingham and Medford.
The seat became vacant earlier this year when Edward Markey won a special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left open after John Kerry was named secretary of state.
Clark supports abortion rights and said that while she's disappointed with its website problems, she believe Obama's health care initiative is a historic law that could pave the way to even broader health care coverage for Americans.

A democrat wins a congressional seat in MA. In other shocking news, water is wet, and the sky is blue.
Yet we’re told constantly that it is the Republicans who are obsessed with sexuality and perversions.
Too many f-ing morons in this state. Wish the bulk of them would move........
If the maroons left the State it would be pretty much empty.
Now, several years on, I wish I had made the move decades ago. Keep in mind that wherever you go your presence will be reinforcing the good part of what's left of the USA we used to know. We could use the reinforcements.
I’m already in a state where lefties decided to emigrate. Personally I would prefer if they just stated in their ruined enclaves and enjoyed the ‘fruits’ of their politics. Any right thinking person should bail.
Addivinola (the republican) opposes to abortion and believes that an unborn fetus is entitled to legal protections. He also criticized the federal health care law and said efforts to expand health coverage are best left up to states.
I would prefer that they all stay in one place and not move to corrupt other states with their liberal voting patterns. i guess they have already done that - like a bunch of locusts.
