In 1945, thousands of soldiers returned to the United States from combat on the Pacific and European fronts of World War II with severe mental trauma. Unable to treat their terrible injuries and illnesses, US Veterans Affairs hospitals lobotomized some 2,000 of them. Wall Street Journal:The Lobotomy Files Part One is telling the story of these soldiers and the misjudged medical process they went through as part of a special project called The Lobotomy Files, the first of which focuses on Roman Tritz. Tritz, a 90-year-old veteran who flew a B-17 Flying Fortress across Nazi Germany, began to hear voices on his return from Europe. Doctors responded by sawing holes in the sides of his skull and severing brain connections. Other entries in The Lobotomy Files include a video documentary featuring Tritz and the unsettling case study of one mentally ill veteran's life in a prisoner of war camp and eventual lobotomy. Thee deplorably immoral medical experimentation, eugenics and euthanasia programs that the Germans are singularly infamous for having undertaken the most heinous, inhumane medical procedures ever, are like anyone, everyone, everyone invariably shocked when they become aware that the German eugenics, euthanasia programs of the 1930’s are ones based on programs pioneered by the US mdical establishment, details of which are found at Wikipedia at Wikipedia:Nazi Eugenics the first few paragraphs excerpted below.
I’m no apologist for the medical industry, US War Department who undertook this reprehensible program but I’d like to play devil’s advocate for a moment to prove a point,I already know that the apology for the lobotomy advocates isn’t worth a damn.
You’re a doctor who has sworn to uphold the Hippocratic Oath, one that has you putting yourself in unenviable moral dilemmas where you are sworn to uphold the healer’s first and only commandment, o do what’s best above everything else. You witness the horrific consequences of history’s worst, most terrible conflict’s effect, having relegated what was once a functional, normal human being into a tormented beast. As a human being first, then doctor, you cry out for these people’s terrible fate, the worst of which is the very limited options available in which to abide by the oath you made. Your options are few, very few and far between, referring to the suffering as unbearable is comparatively speaking, a lie. The only actual option you have, putting it in a manner that is really a stretch to say you’re giving the doctors the benefit of the doubt , but we will, when we get to know it is a method untried, its remedy unknown, it’s moral implications even more of a netherworld than the method’s ability to do something, anything. So, that’s what an apologist might say in behalf of doctors who despite their history of Dr. Mengele-like proclivities, were held in high esteem.
But the apology, like any apology is wholly inadequate, never really exonerates anyone and that like their American colleagues a decade earlier involved in self-serving eugenics programs as the first to get the chance to play God. And that is my very point. Any,all of these horrendously macabre experiments, be it German, American or the Japanese in Unit 731, a medical experiments program every bit as heinous, nightmarish, macabre as that of which occurred in the concentration in camps, which the US chose not to prosecute because they wanted the Japanese research that focused on bacteriological, biological warfare in staying ahead of the Soviets, ’enjoyed ’ might not be a good word, but certainly enthusiasm for what they were doing , getting the opportunity to explore and uncover totally unknown areas of the human condition, until then forcibly hindered by strict moral guidelines and now for the very first time ever, a doctor could play God better than God., without the slightest moral compunction,medical, moral guidelines, to do with the human victim anything and everything, all for the sake of pure science, So, “pure” did the Japanese in Unit 731 maintain their total disregard for the slightest human consideration, performing vivisections, where you perform an autopsy so to speak, on a live human, usually Chinese, and most importantly no anesthesia was permitted, the excuse was that it would affect the results of the vivisection.
So, my point is that the doctors advocated these lobotomies not because they felt it offered any real medical benefits but simply to perform pure medical research, mainly out of intellectual curiosity, where the usual medical hindrances,moral imperatives, restricting to a overwhelming degree what they can and can not do, and for lack of a better word, take the fun out of doing it as"pure" science, to learn new and yet to be discovered neurological wonders, all under the guise of healing thy patient. **************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

I thought ECT was beneficial to patients with certain illnesses.
Lobotomies were “settled science” in the 1940’s. Anyone against them was a “denier” of medical advancement.
Lobotomies for the most part occurred when there was no possible way for the institution to maintain safety with the patient. These days facilities are mandated to keep one on one or two- three on one care with patients who are dangerous. (btw that an emergency room visits are the reasons that health care costs are so high.)
Lobotomies were a compassionate alternative to death.
In our current culture, we will not lift the stringent requirements for caring for the mentally ill, instead, we will compassionately kill them for the culture of death is expanding. Watch for doctors to again be in the forefront of the upcoming American Killing Fields.
My mother in law received electro shock therapy probably in the late 50’s or early 60’s at a very well respected sanitorium. It helped her get beyond a traumatic event that had her completely dissociated from reality.
Years later, the family would talk about some event that had occurred, and she would have no memory of it….. not all past memories, but random ones were missing. At least the horrible one was gone.
As a boy, I lived in a country where mental patients on day release from the local insane asylum wandering the streets were a common sight. The most disturbing to me at the time, the most heartbreaking sight, where the people who had undergone transorbital (”ice pick”) lobotomy.
