In Phoenix, more than 200 veteran inmates have been told they will be moving to a segregated wing of the Maricopa County Jail.
During a press conference today, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio formally announced his plan to house approximately 250 veteran inmates together, in a housing unit that dons patriotic décor and features special behavioral programming aimed at dealing with symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
PTSD continues to plague military veterans returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and for incarcerated veterans, coping with the disorder without the help of friends or family can be even more difficult.
Sheriff Arpaio has called himself Americas toughest sheriff, particularly on immigration. In October, a federal judge ordered an independent monitor to oversee Arpaio, after ruling that the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office singled out Latinos for detention. Now Sheriff Arpaio says he wants to help veteran inmates dealing with PTSD.

But read the article.
It makes perfect sense to me and I think there may be a better chance for reform among the vets.
The guy does what he thinks is right. I applaud that.
In this instance I think it could have some decent outcomes. I don’t have a problem with it at all. Makes sense to me.
Agree, completely! We could use a few more just like Sheriff Arpaio!
He should have just done this without announcing it; now the McC’s will be on his case.
I think Sheriff Joe is on to the right idea here. Certainly our vets deserve more care and programs than they have received. This may help them all get a better shot at life
Two-hundred and fifty vets in prison? I’d sure like to see a Pareto chart on what they’re in there for. How many vets are in prison nationwide? Is this unusual? All the vets I’ve met where a cut or several above the average guy on the street. What’s going on here? Any ideas?
That’s for sure.
Arpaio is the local County Sheriff. As such his jail population would generally be made up of people convicted of lesser offenses. (At least this is the general situation in most counties / states.) Anyone convicted of serious crimes would be incarcerated in a state prison. These people are probably guilty of crimes that garnered them anywhere from a few days to six months in jail.
The non-vets are going to be suing for this pretty quickly. Unequal treatment.
There are thousands of prisoner in Sheriff Joe’s jail. 250 or so is a pretty small number, if you ask me.
At any rate, the 250 figure sounds a lot smaller in light of this. Thought you might be interested in that comparison.
If I had my druthers, I would LOVE to see him take Eric The Red into custody.
Yeah like don't illegal immigrants suffer from PTBC?:
Post Traumatic Border Crossing
In AZ, people heading to prison spend a month or so in the County slammers until they’re processed out to their more permanent “homes.” At Maricopa County jail, there are people who haven’t been bailed out after arrest, people serving short time for petty offenses, people waiting to be sent to prison and illegals waiting for a bus ride. The number you quote surprises me, but only a little. Phoenix isn’t the little cow town it used to be.
Overcrowding was a issue back before Joe, to the point the Feds were starting to turn people loose. Tent City (made from army surplus tents) and cheap food turned that around. This is why Joe Arpaio will be reelected to office as long as he want to be there.
I expect them to suffer from “jealousy.” A common ailment.
Oh, I forgot...there are prisons in Maricopa County, but they are either private or run by the State.
Thank you for the mention.
I was going to link his Wiki-pedia page, but it looks as if the staff of the ACLU wrote it up.
If half what they wrote there was true, he would be in prison himself.
“The program will integrate incarcerated veterans who have been jailed for a wide range of crimes, including aggravated DUI, burglary and aggravated assault.”
Thank you. I was surprised to see that 7,500 to 10,000 figure myself. I would not have guessed that many inmates.
I thought it might be interesting to compare the inmate population to that of Los Angeles County.
The ACLU estimates something like 22,000 inmates average, but this linked article pegs it at 18,000.
The Los Angeles County jail system is considered the nation’s largest.
Think DUI, simple assault, disturbing the peace, etc.
The PTSD comments lend support to what D1 said.
These are not all convicts, but vets who are awaiting trial, which might mean months.
It took just about everything I had to beat the recall this year. But with your help, NULL, we beat the liberal opponents while standing up and staying true to our conservative ideals.
If my opponents perceive me as weak or in a weakened position there’s nothing to stop them from launching another recall against me. And NULL, they have already publicly stated they would try to recall me again if they have the opportunity.
NULL, you and I both know the Democrats would love NOTHING more than to see me defeated. They have poured millions into Arizona to try and take me down before, and I need to be ready to stop them again.
I’ve got to have every single one of you with me. If you have ever donated to me before I need your donation again today http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/ct/16387502:18051429166:m:1:517336660:CAA0F23CE8C912629CC3508FC971FF1A:r .
Every dollar donated http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/ct/16387502:18051429166:m:1:517336660:CAA0F23CE8C912629CC3508FC971FF1A:r will go towards ensuring I have a strong, winning campaign ready to fight back against Obama’s liberal army.
Unlike some politicians, I have never and will never compromise our beliefs just to get a few votes. I believe in protecting and serving our nation at all costs. But, the recall depleted our campaign’s funds, and now as we enter the year’s end, I need your immediate help.
The Democrats are looking to my campaign’s funds as a sign of our strength. Your immediate donation today http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/ct/16387502:18051429166:m:1:517336660:CAA0F23CE8C912629CC3508FC971FF1A:r will send the Democrats a strong message about the strength we have.
Please join me in fighting back today http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/ct/16387502:18051429166:m:1:517336660:CAA0F23CE8C912629CC3508FC971FF1A:r .
- Sheriff Joe
Joe Arpaio has long been veteran friendly. And he probably realizes that a lot of these vets are in jail for the wrong reasons, and need help instead of punishment, and are not getting the help they need on the outside.
I suspect that putting them together is going to help a lot, and he will probably bring in experienced counselors. And, last of all, if they show signs of improvement, he will get a word in to the prosecutor and judge, to help them, not hurt them.
While Maricopa county is not a good place to be if you are a low life creep, it is a lot better than average for helping those who deserve help.
Here is a U. S. Department of Justice profile of jail inmates from 2002.
Thanks for the mention. Generally some prison inmates may flow back and forth as they come to trial on other charges also.
Thanks Cyber Liberty. We sure are a resourceful bunch. ;^)
I wish one of his deputies would pull McCain’s SUV over and arrest the driver. McCain would blow his top and he could be arrested. Then drop the charges on the driver.
I like the idea
We learn, old FRiend. We learn. I keep a pocket calculator handy for discussions with LIEberals who like to bandy numbers about. They, understandably, hate it.
Lib: “Uh! It’s just tewwible Sheriff Joe keeps 10,000 people locked up!”
Me: “Uh, that’s about 0.2% of the population.”
Lib: “Oh look! A squirrel!”
Me: “Now you’re lying about forest animals.”
In my experience, you could tell a liberal that if they were to put 1500ml of water in a 1000ml beaker that it would overflow, and if Obama said otherwise, they would not believe you. And if you poured 1500ml of water into that beaker and it overflowed, they would tell you that you are a Conservative, so obviously you weren’t going to believe Obama, and it wouldn’t matter.
This is why libs hate him. He has no problem punishing the real criminals and helping those that need it.
PTSD should be addressed...we owe them at the very least that much.
Can you forward me the email from Joe that you posted? Please check private message for the address. Thanks.
Based on previous experience, that is, WWII and Vietnam, PTSD has about a 50% spontaneous recovery rate.
The other 50% break down into most being responsive to assisted recovery within a few years, about a third of the 50% needing assisted support for most of the rest of their life, and about 2.5-5% unresponsive, leading to some form of institutionalization, suicide or other undesirable outcome.
Often, the high end “unresponsives” have other, underlying psychiatric conditions either parallel with or aggravated by the PTSD.
Can you please send me the Joe Arpaio email you received? I am not on his mailing list but want to forward it to my list. Thanks. Montag813
Forworded it at 0940 12/13/13, to the email address you gave me.
