I think that the laws were pretty lax at the time...if you were young, healthy, and looked strong...hiring agents were actually on the docks, you could get a job, not a great one, but it beat the heck out of slowly starving to death in Ireland! I hardly think that today’s situation is comparable.

I seriously doubt Joke has any idea how his ancestors got here, and it’s highly likely they did it legally. The system was much tighter then and laws more more strictly enforced.

One set of my ancestors come over from Ireland during the famine. They were made citizens on the boat in the harbor before they landed. The children became citizens when they enlisted in the Union Army at Ft. Sumpter 10 years later.
