Saturday Night Live overlord Lorne Michaels reportedly set up a stealth audition for potential black, female cast members amid a clamoring from the Internet that NBC's long-running sketch comedy show had a diversity problem. The cry to add a black comedienne to the cast grew louder in 2013 as SNL replaced four departing cast members with a host of white talent.
Then, as those murmurs gained traction and presented an actual PR problem that the network was forced to deal with in the wake of Kenan Thompson's candid interview on the subject, Scandal star Kerry Washington took a turn as host and addressed the issue in an actual sketch.
Now, Gothamist has unearthed information regarding a secret audition Michaels threw together in Los Angeles while reportedly exploring the possibility of diversifying the cast.
Actress Bresha Webb told the Jasmine BRAND about the showcase, which was held at LAs Groundlings Theater: "The audition came about from an inside source from SNL. I dont think any of us had a clue about the showcase until two days prior. It was an awesome opportunity even though it was such a short notice but, if you stay ready you aint gotta get ready and we were READY! Lol But we were all honored to be selected." [Gothamist]
Tonite was epic. I cried watching LA's SNL black girls only showcase. So good, so brave. It's not a competition, it's a sisterhood. #fb christina anthony (@christinanthony) December 2, 2013

Is there anyone on the left that can seriously argue that they believe and uphold this dream? Seems importance of skin color increases every day for them.
Because we all know that black people will only laugh at jokes when they are told by black comedians.
I can think of a couple of candidates in House of Representatives.
What about Asians, has their ever been an Asian cast member?
What am I, chopped liver? Dammit.
SNL hasn’t been funny for decades.
This obsession over race and diversity is the sign of a culture that is destroying itself from the inside out.
I bet there hasn’t been any auditions in all of Hollywood for conservative actors because of the diversity problems that Hollywood has.
Well did they find one?
I’m curious, because they are not particularly funny so much as they are vulgar and annoying.
Im sure that Shirley from Whats Happening is available,,,
she was funny..
There's probably no pressure for one. Asians in the USA aren't marinated in victimhood.
Come to think of it, I can’t think of any Latino cast members SNL has ever had.
I don't think they know what that word means.
Asians don’t whine.
They’re too busy studying.
Im sure that Shirley from Whats Happening is available,,,
Someone please define “diversity problem”?
Especially why lack of diversity is a “problem” unless you’re a racialist.
> Because we all know that black people will only laugh at jokes when they are told by black comedians.
Personally I often think black comedians are funnier than their white counterparts but it doesn’t matter what color they are if the skits are good...: )
Most if not all black comedy consists of ripping on whites.
They had a girl named Maya Rudolph who played a black girl when ever they needed one for a skit even though she looked totally white to me. She is gone this year so I guess they were trying to replace Maya. Lots of new people this year, I miss the old ones.
Bobby Lee was on Mad TV.
That was one of the funniest shows ever. They guy that played Stuart was hysterical- I haven’t laughed that hard since the Not Ready for Prime Timer Players were on SNL.
SNL needs to go. Not funny at all and hasn’t been for over 20 years.
Every Saturday night! Don’t try to watch anything else Mister!
She was good in Idiocracy.
She's the daughter of Minnie Ripperton, and her father was white.
I don’t know Minnie Ripperton but I am guessing she is black.
Their problem has been that the black cast members are used like mistrals. They’ve had authentic black talent but they eventually end up playing caricatures because it is funny to the liberal watchers of the show.
“Haha...that negro is the funniest member. I can say that because our maid was like one of the family so I am kinda black. Plus I voted for Obama. “.
I am pretty sure she died more than 10 years ago.
This article is a “leak”.
Part of SNL’s “stealth” effort to advertise in every market that they are looking for a funny liberal who happens to be black and MUST be black as well. Now the white members don’t have to be funny, but the black one does....see past NSL stars.
My bad,,, I stand corrected.
Keep on searching Lorne...
Mike Myers said he was the template for Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers movies. An amazingly accurate portrayal, by all accounts.
Oh, but you do. You just need a little help.
So help me then. :)
Would a tranny in a tanning booth work?
It's basically all the left's got... skin color and resentment because of it...
LOL You get an A+ for that one.
Affirmative action on SNL
You don’t have to be funny, just black, to meet their quota.
Rob Schneider. He’s Eurasian.
Asians dont whine.
Theyre too busy studying.
Saw a rather extensive study recently where the bottom line was that attractive people got better grades in school ... my thoughts went to “did they norm the study by breaking the data down into ethnic groups” ... seems pretty obvious with generally attractive asian women doing well at school and generally unattractive black women doing well at hair extensions and yelling at their baby daddy that the results would come out that way.
I get to a point where I am not able to identify a person’s race. I worked with children and once a parent asked the race of a child who had hit their child. I could remember the child in question had trouble with math, wore his brother’s hand me downs and had a beautiful smile, but had to think about the child’s race as I didn’t use race as one of their identifiers.
The same with Mad TV. Great characters but I never thought about race as on of the identifiers of the characters. I believe they transcended race on Mad TV as I don’t remember them putting a black person on a pedestal simply because of their race.
