This is assault, and even if one thinks that physical discipline is sometimes warranted that does not consist of punching in the face/head.

Head shot = deadly force.

“There has to be WAY more to this story...”

Maybe so, but I find it difficult, absent the kid assaulting the driver, that would justify his actions. Apart from having to defend himself, the driver is in serious trouble.

The day Uncle Scam made it unacceptable for adults to physically discipline children was the day our civilization was cooked.

“Head shot = deadly force.”

Yes, that’s the whole “logic” behind the so-called knock-out game, no?

Slap in the face, maybe even (not that I advocate it), but punching, by a grown man? That is right out!

Should be met with equal or greater force.

There are other places to let go with the corporal punishment than a kid’s head, places on the body that are made for it

When the truth comes out it will clearly show the kid assaulted the driver by hitting the driver's fist with his head. The driver will sue the kid's parents for damages.

Karen Dickerson told police the driver has had issues with students prior to the incident. The mother said that in the past, she had complained to Durham School Services after the driver allegedly struck her daughter, but the company failed to act. The driver also has been known to smoke aboard the bus and purposefully slam on the breaks when he saw students stand up.

Sounds like a sadist.

Never hit a child in the face nature has provided a much better place.

Totally agree with you on that- If I had a school-age child these days, that’s what I would be doing (homeschooling).

If the rules of the bus are that you can’t do anything but sit in your seat quietly, no video games, no texting, etc., and you had a long ride home, then that’s just not right. The “enforcer” was going to teach the kid a lesson and lost it. Wrong no matter what.

On a similar thought, I went to see a friend’s 5-year daughter’s dance recital at a local elem.school. All ages from toddlers to old ladies were represented. It went on for a little over an hour. For me, it was tolerable, but for the 8-yr. old brother, likely not. He started playing quietly with his little electronic video game not bothering anybody. He got in trouble with his parents, for not paying attention to the girls dancing. Frankly, I would have left him alone. What do you all say?

Re: Forced attendance at younger sister’s dance recital.

Having to endure these for four years, I would have preferred being locked in the trunk for the two and a half hours.
I still get tremors on hearing “American Patrol” or when someone mentions “Hula Babies” (actually they were kind of fun to watch, every blessed one of them out of synch and doing something different.)

“If this had happened to me, my parents would have thanked the bus driver and blamed me. Then again, we’re talking 60’s & 70s.”

Sorry. Discipline is one thing. But this is an adult acting out his frustrations and anger. It is never appropriate to punch a kid. Most likely that ‘something else’ is him tired of the kids.
You can’t work with kids, then don’t. It isn’t for everyone.

Maybe so, but a punch to the face is not discipline. It is acting out his anger from a position of power. It is important to know the difference. Discipline is for the kid’s benefit and is controlled. Acting out is for the angry adult’s benefit. I think we all know which one this was.

Like the dad whose ex-finance secretly taped “kicking and punching” (not really) his blubbering daughter “for eating carrots”... there is the “real story”... somewhere.
