Mayor Bloomberg: Mandatory Flu Shots For NYC Pre-Schoolers Will Save Lives
Ny Daily News ^ | Dec 13, 2013 | Jennifer Fermino and Celeste Katz

Posted on 12/14/2013 5:20:40 PM PST by Innovative

Mayor Bloomberg on Friday defended the new city mandate that kids under five who attend pre-school or daycare get annual flu shots -- a rule critics say is just another nanny-state move by Hizzoner.

Opponents of the compulsory shots -- including autism activists suspicious of vaccination complications -- protested on the steps of City Hall Tuesday, calling the requirement intrusive and absurd.

As for parents who say it's their call as to whether kids should get the flu jab, Bloomberg said, "Your kid can impact other kids by transferring a disease and bringing it home...

So the flu and small pox are the same?

Heck the flu vaccine doesn’t even address the right strain most of the time.

I am a big believer in flu shots (I'm a scientist with a passing interest in epidemiology). That said, I'm a bigger believer in informed choice.

I tend to think that Mister Bloomberg's apparent (am I seeing more that what's there?) obsession with controlling people deserves some investigation from mental health professionals.

I'm no expert, but I'd love to know what the shrinks thinks.

Hope you foget your sarcasm tag....smallpox is multiple times more dangerous than the flu....

Your kid gets the flu....a few tough days with a sick kid...you kid gets smallpox...you will probably bury them....as well as possibility start an epidemic since vast numbers of illegals never got immunized for it...

I confirmed it == they don’t vaccinate against smallpox anymore.

From the CDC website:

“Routine smallpox vaccination among the American public stopped in 1972 after the disease was eradicated in the United States. Until recently, the U.S. government provided the vaccine only to a few hundred scientists and medical professionals working with smallpox and similar viruses in a research setting.

After the events of September and October, 2001, however, the U.S. government took further actions to improve its level of preparedness against terrorism. One of many such measures—designed specifically to prepare for an intentional release of the smallpox virus—included updating and releasing a smallpox response plan. In addition, the U.S. government has enough vaccine to vaccinate every person in the United States in the event of a smallpox emergency. “

I was going to say something about how happy I’ll be when he’s gone, but then I thought of his replacement.

Every year the extended family, which includes several MD’s, pressures everyone to get flu shots. I’m one of the few who doesn’t get them and am always fine, whereas every year I later also hear variations of, “...but it would have been a much worse flu if I hadn’t gotten that shot”.

The flu shot is what some committee last year predicted what this year's most likely top three flu strains are going to be.

My personal experience was with the additional swine flu shot during the Carter years. A lot of my fellow students in college that got the shot also got that flu, and the rest of us were unscathed.

Cool. An expert.

How effective is the flu shot? What are the chances that a person be exposed to the strain that is in the shot?

Three strains in the shot versus hundreds of possible strains. Plus mutations that make the shot ineffective.

Not an expert. But inquiring minds want to know.

Are their any stats on how many students and families died from the flu, available Bloomy? Or do you just crave to assert one more control switch over the serfs you rule? Or do you have any financial/family/friend’s interest in mind at one of the companies who’ll supply/administer the vaccines? Follow the money.

After all, the Nanny government protects them from unkind words, disturbing thoughts and the heartbreak of not winning.

So why shouldn’t they be protectd from physical damage as well?

“How effective is the flu shot? What are the chances that a person be exposed to the strain that is in the shot?

It’s a “best-guess” dosage of multiple vaccines; a shotgun approach. Medical personnel claim it’s effective. I just avoid dr’s offices during the flu season; that’s where the sick people are.

Three strains in the shot versus hundreds of possible strains. Plus mutations that make the shot ineffective.”

I wonder if computers or humans make the vaccine ingredients - for the coming season - informed, final decision of “which flus this year”?

My Chiropractor who is a great big lib (but a really good chiro) is absolutely against any vaccines of any sort for his boys, has been since their birth. When ocare was new in 2010, I asked him what he would do if he were required to vaccinate his kids in order for them to be covered by insurance. I saw just for a second a dawning in his eyes for just what government might do to him, instead of for him.

Nope, far from an expert, but I do have an interest in the topic.

The CDC usually puts a fairly good effort into selecting the viruses on which to base the vaccines, although my question would be why they would recycle the same Type A virus antigens ( H1N1 and H3N2 ) from last season to this season (unless I read the info incorrectly).

As far as the number of possible strains, I suspect that it's quite possible that one can get at least some cross-immunity from a flu component of a different strain.

Smallpox only killed about a third of its victims before the age of antibiotics and antivirals.

My grandfather survived smallpox at age three in 1902. My father survived a ruptured appendix before antibiotics.

Unfortunately, I was left in a semi-stupor after contracting the Hong Kong flu in 1968, only coming to my full senses in time for the Clinton years.

What a disappointment.

And now Obama! I am a greeter at Wal-Mart and shake each hand and hope to get the flu again to end this mental anguish which so beguiles me.

Cross immunity. Good point. Wondered about that.

Still, it would be nice to know from year to year how effective the flu shot is.

First of all, apparently few people get the flu. Most of us catch a cold and think that it is the flu.

My son actually caught the flu last year. The doctor confirmed it. And he he has gotten the shot every year since he was first in school.

Even flu shot proponents from the science community will say that one can still get the flu after getting the shot.

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure that the shot will sometimes just lessen the severity and duration of the flu (something critically important in a disease which causes roughly 30,000 deaths per year.)

The term "effective" is a bit elusive, I'm afraid.

Yup. Probably depends on a lot of factors. For example, booster shots are needed since the antibodies diminish over time.

Of course, the flu viruses mutate. So at what point will a shot that actually relates to the original strain be ineffective — a month, 6 months, a year, or years?

And new origins of the flu virus happen — swine, bird, monkey etc.

Another variable — how mobile is the virus? If the virus is quarantined or kept to a small area, then it is not a threat.
