Haircut Deficit: Kids Living in Basements a Drag on U.S. Services Spending

The recession ended in mid-2009. Since then spending on services has lagged spending on durable goods by a huge margin.

Why? A record number of Millennials, adults aged 18 to 32, put off household formation and stay at home to live with parents.

Why? No job and/or huge college debt with no way to pay it back.

The jobless rate for Americans aged 18 to 19 years old stood at 19.2%. Unemployment among 20- to 24-year-olds is 11.6 percent. In contrast, the overall unemployment rate is 7%.

That is to be sure, however what is to be done about it.
Costs are skyrocketing on everything (basics-food, utilities, fuel, housing etc).
Many people are cutting costs by sharing a house with their kids or parents.

Decent jobs are hard to find. Our daughter (age 39) stayed with us for six months until she could find a good job not in the DC area. She’s happily ensconced in Savannah near her sister and BIL with a great job. It happens.

Well, we have to tax the parents and give more money to the basement dwellers so they can buy their own stuff and boost the economy.
I would not be surprised if someone seriously suggests this.

Sorry for the derail, back to the article.

As I mentioned on another thread, few companies want to hire some one who doesn't have experience. There is a real fear of training people only to have them leave.

So for those trying to enter into the job market, they are stuck. That and the priorities of the Mill's are different. They want to have fun, and don't care much about money.

You don’t have to scratch FR very far to find a protectionist.

That’s a really stoopid idea, when just raising the minimum wage to $25 an hour would solve the problem.

Of course with elderly parents and obamacare, the kids may get to move upstairs shortly anyway.

Bingo, we have a winner.
There will be calls to make government the “employer of last resort”.

Speaking of “a drag”, some of you young men need to pull up your pants before going on a job interview.

Statistically, millennials are far less likely to ever own a home and lead successful lives than their parents. Part of it is that many millennials just aren't interested in working hard. But a big part of it also is that the cost of everything is so much higher (insurance, food, utilities, gas, vehicles and maintenance, housing, etc) than it used to be that its damn near impossible for someone starting out to get off the ground. Also, with the economy as it is and so many experienced workers in the market, businesses can afford to be choosy in who they hire. Many inexperienced young people that do get hired have to work slave hours to keep the job, being of so little value to the company and easily replaced. Its always been that way no doubt, but again the current economy has exacerbated it.

Yep. I’m a victim of a former Obama supporter that has since seen the light and realizes 0’s an empty suit. Fortunately for him, I’ll forgive his lack of judgment that came from lack of experience and living in the real world. I think 0’s losing his rock star status as the reality sets in that he’s not their buddy after all. He was just there to mooch off their weed and beer as long as he’d let them...

Lost all credibility right there. What world do the people who write this drack live in? And how can they possibly believe that the public will continue to fall for their lies?

The recession ended in mid-2009!

Wow, what a coincidence! Oblamo the Magnificent takes office in January, 2009, and alakazam alakazoo (and allah akbar!) within a half-year the recession disappears into thin air, thanks to a guy who knows NOTHING about economics, or anything else!

Of course. It’s like the logic that unemployment pay needs to be extended so that the recipients will buy stuff and feed the economy. Kinda like eating your own flesh to keep from starving.

Speaking of “a drag”, some of you young men need to pull up your pants before going on a job interview.

And get a clue about dressing for business. I had a couple of young men come to interview with me for an adjunct instructor position. They showed up wearing jeans and t-shirts. When I asked them about it, they said it was because they were Apple experts, and Apple's business culture is jeans and t-shirts. They were shocked when I told them they weren't interviewing with Apple, they were interviewing with me, and I expect my instructors to dress like professionals.

Today I asked my wife to call and make an appointment for me to get a haircut tomorrow at 11:00am. She laughed and said they won't have that available but she will call and see what she can get...

Turned out someone just canceled and I got it.

That's the way it has to be!
