A Rio Rancho teen just wanted to dress up for the holidays at his school. Other kids dressed as Santa, so he did too. Now, his teacher is under fire for a comment he made that some parents are calling racist. Students at Cleveland High School were told they could dress up as Santa, elves or reindeer. But when a black student chose to be Santa Claus, he was called out for the color of his skin. "Christopher, don't you know Santa Claus is white? Why are you wearing that?" Michael Rougier remembered. When Rougier learned that is how a teacher reacted to his child when he showed up to school wearing Santa hat and beard, he was livid. "There's no room for that in the classroom," Rougier said. "Whether this teacher felt Christopher may have been wearing this out of context, there's no room for it. There's just no room for it." A spokesperson for Rio Rancho Public Schools says the Cleveland High School teacher knows he made a "dumb" mistake, and that he has since apologized to the Rougier family.
Didn’t the teacher’s mother ever tell her Santa is not a real person?
In today’s world, that is a REAL crime. We haven’t heard the end of it.
But when a black kid kills a white old man, that’s nothing.
All these troublemakers should be given a drawing of Santa Claus and a box of crayons and told to color it in.
Then we will all find out how racist they are.
He could have come as “zwarte piet”, the Dutch santa’s helper...
OK, I vote this person be named Dumbest Teacher of the Year.
Gee whiz, let the kid dress up as Santa, regardless.
A face-palm is definitely appropriate here.
What an idiot
:: When Rougier learned that is how a teacher reacted to his child ::
Sounds like the kid was telling a “bouncy”. This one might not pass the smell test....
So, if a white student dresses up a Martin Luther King, is anyone who corrects them a racist?
Didn’t think so.

Again, second-hand knowledge. This has an odor to it.
That said, if I, (a pasty-white XPian male over 50) was accused of the same, I’d simply apologize (through a surrogate, like this) and try to disappear too.
Such a situation is ^designed^ to be a conflagration for the racist lust of the media.
And dressing in Black Face is a horrible crime against humanity
Sentence - death.
Will the white Santa become a victim of the knock out game?
That teacher could sue for slander for the racism accusation.
If the teacher actually said this, it was probably a joke, one that invited some similarly “cute” riposte from the kid. But evidently we’re too touchy for that in the Age of Obama.
Apparently, the teacher came to school playing the part of that small, pink, puckered opening located just under the base of Rudolph’s tail...
I remember some song
Santa Clause wears a red suit — must be a Communist
Long hair and a white beard — must be a Pacifist
Leave those kids alone.
the actual saint nick was white. this is undeniable.
although the spirit of saint nick can express itself in anyone.
historically, santa is white. but if you believe in santa, and by that I mean the giving spirit of Christmas and the rememberance of our Lord, then expressing it with a santa suit personally is fine regardless of your race.
but, if you’re making a doll... a representation of the original saint nick, then it should be white. anything else would be a lie.
Yeah, that 4th Century "Sanctus Nicolaus" was Greek. He probably had big bushy black eyebrows, snappy dark eyes, a big black ,and a darker skin tone.
Kinky Friedman states that everyone knows it was not the Jews, but Santa Claus that killed Jesus Christ.
Some refer to him as Satan Claws, and his eight tiny rain demons. (flying horned gods)
But he did not wear a red suit, live at the North Pole, or fly around the skies in a sled pulled by reindeer. The "Santa Claus" character as depicted in popular culture is a myth, not the historical St. Nicholas, and hence can be of any color.
Sounds like an inappropriate joke.
The main lesson here is don’t become a teacher. Absolutely not worth it at all.
the Turks hadn’t invaded Greek asia minor yet
And here I thought Christmas was about the birth of Jesus Christ.
Years ago, Brumett Echohawk (Pawne), told of what happened at an Indian school in Oklahoma when Santa showed up. The children fled in terror!
The school administration put their heads together, and then there was a visit to the children by an Indian Santa. Buckskins, feathers, spoke the children’s language. Still had his bag of toys and the children loved it!
Santa can be any color you want him to be.
Pawne = Pawnee.
It was a stupid remark.
What is the problem with Santa Claus, anyway?
Yes, St. Nicholas was a Greek/Caucasian person!
Santa Claus is a legendary figure based originally on St. Nicholas, but the mythic proportions of his personality in our society make him mostly a legend. I do not see why anyone would care whether a student who is black, wears a Santa Claus costume. Is this teacher an idiot?
