Nevada sage grouse critic calls feds closed-minded

Elko County Commissioner Grant Gerber suggested the BLM and U.S. Forest Service are seeking comment on a regional sage-grouse conservation plan only to placate critics of the push to protect the greater sage grouse, which is found in 11 Western states, including Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Oregon.

Ranchers, miners, energy developers and state officials fear restrictions on the use of public lands in sage grouse habitat would have deep economic consequences in the rural West. Former Republican Assemblyman John Carpenter said he believes the government is determined to list the chicken-sized game bird as part of a bigger strategy to lock up federal lands.

The truth is, sage grouse are so stupid, they don’t hack it in a competitive environment.

You should see how stupid sage grouse are when they’re in a hay field and you’re running a mower with a 180HP engine, howling turbo and hydraulic systems over a rotary cutter head. I mean the noise is on part with a small jet on takeoff... and these stupid birds will hunker down until the cutter head is only 2’ off of them, then they’ll try to flush, but because they waited so long, you can’t stop in time (even tho you’re moving at only 6 to 8 MPH) and the bird ends up going through the machine. You hear them go through - because you hear the conditioner rolls come apart and then slam back together.

So now you have to pull back the throttle, disengage the cutter head, get out a plastic bag, go behind the machine and pick up all the bird pieces. Why? Because if you leave them in the windrow and you bale them up into the hay, when cows eat that hay, they die of botulism poisoning. Kills cows stone dead.

Stupid birds. Really, really stupid.

“Doesn’t anyone attend these meetings and make fun of these fools?”

What I have seen is that people do attend the meetings and voice outrage and such. The FS discreetly moves along with their liberal agenda to close off lands and roads, but slows the process down a bit. They then hold another meeting and stress the point that they previously held a meeting for public comment. They slowly move ahead a bit more with their liberal agenda. They then use the press to cover their butts to say “we held meetings to listen to you” and continue on with their liberal agenda. If they did not hold the meetings for people to voice their opposition in a responsible and ‘civil’ manner then when they finally do close roads and ban use of the land all hell would break loose, as it should anyway. Having the meetings gives people an excuse to shake their heads and say things like “at least we tried” and “this isn’t the country I remember” etc. The comment periods and meetings have proven to be a great way for the FED to act like they really give a crap what you or I think and proceed with their plans. In essence, a pressure relief valve.

The truth is, sage grouse are so stupid, they don’t hack it in a competitive environment.

I recall hunting them in Wyoming, as an 8-yr old with a .410.

You could walk right up to a covey feeding on the ground. Then, from 25-30' away, pick them off one-by-one (it wasn't sport, it was dinner). They wouldn't flush unless you started shouting and ran right in amongst 'em.

This bird is not long for survival, that's for sure.

Like states are in a position to MAKE the fed gov do anything while they are taking Federal Money for literally everything.

...as to your mentioned stats on fed land, a misnomer if ever there was one. The number needs to be more like 95 percent forever.

If those stupid birds go on the ESL they will be treated like eagles, and you will be fined for harvesting them, or worse.

The density of sage grouse on the Deseret Ranch in Woodruff Utah is TEN TIMES what it is on the surrounding BLM land. Sage grouse need fresh vegetation to eat. They won't get that from a decadent sage monoculture.

Only a year ago, I did a vegetative transect of US 50 in Nevada. It was a repeat of one done 15 years prior. The ONLY places where there was sufficient disturbance to produce consistent grass cover and forbs with which to provide the food sage grouse need was along fence lines where ranchers drive their cattle in dense bunches. I have the photographs and logs to prove it.

Sage grouse hunting in E.Or. in the early 70’s was a joke compared to our bag limits in W. Id. The environment and other conditions appeared to be the same, but, the sage grouse seemed to prefer to die across the border in Id.

Thanks. I was off on NV by less than 1% so that’s good. Well, bad if you look at it from Nevadans viewpoint. Good from the “lyin’ king” and feds viewpoint.

“These people don’t give a damn about the sage grouse. All it is is for control,” Carpenter told the Elko Daily Free Press

In my view Carpenter is correct plus they want to control private land use within and adjacent to these public lands. If they're successful the EPA, eco freaks and BLM enviro-nazis will be celebrating for years to come.
