Seattle Mayor-elect Ed Murray Thursday set a four-month deadline for a committee of labor and business leaders to deliver a recommendation on a higher minimum wage and called on the City Council to act by the end of July.
The tight timeline reflects the pressure he and other city leaders are under from some activist unions and incoming socialist Councilmember Kshama Sawant who say theyll file an initiative for a $15 minimum wage if Murrays committee doesnt deliver something substantive relatively soon.
The beginning of April is a point to review the balance sheet of where we are before we consider putting a measure before voters, said Sawant, who agreed to serve on Murrays 23-member Income Inequality Committee but also noted that no low-wage workers were named to it.
Murray acknowledged that consensus between labor and Seattles business elite might be difficult to reach.
Theres going to be strong disagreement among the individuals who agreed to participate, Murray said. I dont know what the outcome will be.
Murray, who made working toward a $15 minimum wage part of his campaign for mayor, asked the committee to analyze the potential consequences of a higher minimum wage and the citys current cost of living.
Is this going to be a city of the rich or is this going to be a city that is diverse economically, racially and ethnically? Thats the challenge before us.
He added that he hoped the outcome would be a $15 minimum wage, but also avoided saying that was the only acceptable result, leaving open the possibility of a phased-in approach or exemptions for small businesses.
The committee he introduced will be co-chaired by Howard Wright III, founder and CEO of the Seattle Hospitality Group, and David Rolf, president of the Service Employees International Union 775NW.

Note to Seattle & the Mayor:
Brace yourself for an exiting of small businesses from your area.
I have been a bookkeeper for small businesses since 1979. I have seen up close & personal what they can afford & what they cannot afford.
This is a total mistake on your part.
A person’s wages should be dependent upon their skills which they BRING INTO THE JOB, their demeanor with customers, their personal grooming, their punctuality, and their loyalty to the employer.
Outsiders should have no say in this arrangement.
IF I had any clients for my bookkeeping services in the Seattle area, I would tell them to vamoose out of the county—perhaps completely out of the state.
Someone needs to read & then re-read Atlas Shrugged to see what I am saying.
Liberalism is a mental disease.
Why not make the minimum wage $50/hr?
“Income equality”. Welfare queens should be bringing home the same amount of money that heart surgeons bring home. Good thinking.
if french fry makers can make $15 an hour, then people with professional licences and important responsibilities should make that much more right?
and the workers can just say goodbye to tips too...they don’t need no stinking tips is they’re going to make that much money per hour..
Having the government mandate wage raises is a great idea.
It shows compassion.
Everyone loves getting a raise.
Obama says ‘if you like your JOB you can keep it’
He got elected mayor of Seattle by promising a $15 per hour minimum wage? That sounds like our fifth grade class president election when Ricky promised everyone koolaid in the water fountains if he was elected. Yeah, he won. Then we pushed his face into a dog turd when he couldn’t do it. I recommend this action to the citizens of Seattle for your mayor.
I predict(and this is really easy) that if they continue on this path, Seattle will be known as the ‘Detroit of the Northwest’.
You will see more and more of this on the coasts as the limousine liberals get all those little people off their beaches.
I hope it passes just so Seattle does become the Detroit of the PacNW.
It’ll be another fine example of how obvious collectivists want to destroy this country.
Soon to be Detroit on the Puget Sound.
Darn, you beat me to it!
Get ready for robot machines to flip burgers.
Pajamaboy says this is a great idea as he sits in his onesie wondering why he is unemployed with a sociology degree.
You can see why the AGW mentality is infested in the democratic leftists. They don’t believe in naturally occurring events. Some people can earn more than others. Come on man, no way, there has to be fraud involved. Climate occurs naturally, no way man. Man sucks and is destroying the planet.
